A technique for deriving ice temperature in the Arctic seasonal sea ice zone from passive microwave radiances has been developed. The algorithm operates on brightness temperatures derived from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) and uses ice concentration and type from a previously developed thin ice algorithm to estimate the surface emissivity. Comparisons of the microwave derived temperatures with estimates derived from infrared imagery of the Bering Strait yield a correlation coefficient of 0.93 and an RMS difference of 2.1 K when coastal and cloud contaminated pixels are removed. SSM/I temperatures were also compared with a time series of air temperature observation from Gambell on St. Lawrence Island and from Point Barrow, AK weather stations. The global ocean surface wind vector is a key parameter for short-term weather forecasting, the issuing of timely weather warnings, and the gathering of general climatological data. In addition, it affects a broad range of naval missions, including strategic ship movement and positioning, aircraft carrier operations, aircraft deployment, effective weapons use, underway replenishment, and littoral operations. WindSat is a satellite-based multifrequency polarimetric microwave radiometer developed by the Naval Research Laboratory for the U.S. Navy and the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Integrated Program Office. It is designed to demonstrate the capability of polarimetric microwave radiometry to measure the ocean surface wind vector from space. The sensor provides risk reduction for the development of the Conical Microwave Imager Sounder, which is planned to provide wind vector data operationally starting in 2010. WindSat is the primary payload on the Department of Defense Coriolis satellite, which was launched on January 6, 2003. It is in an 840-km circular sun-synchronous orbit. The WindSat payload is performing well and is currently undergoing rigorous calibration and validation to verify mission success. 相似文献

A spectral difference method is used to quantify the magnitude and extent of radio-frequency interference (RFI) observed over the United States in the Aqua AMSR-E radiometer channels. A survey using data from the AMSR-E instrument launched in May 2002 shows the interference to be widespread in the C-band (6.9 GHz) channels. The RFI is located mostly, but not always, near large highly populated urban areas. The locations of interference are persistent in time, but the magnitudes show temporal and directional variability. Strong and moderate RFI can be identified relatively easily using an RFI index derived from the spectral difference between the 6.9- and 10.7-GHz channels. Weak RFI is difficult to distinguish, however, from natural geophysical variability. These findings have implications for future microwave sensing at C-band, particularly over land areas. An innovative concept for radiometer system design is also discussed as a possible mitigation approach. 相似文献

Time-frequency representations (TFRs) of signals are increasingly being used in biomedical research. Analysis of such representations is sometimes difficult, however, and is often reduced to the extraction of ridges, or local energy maxima. In this paper, we describe a new ridge extraction method based on the image processing technique of active contours or snakes. We have tested our method on several synthetic signals and for the analysis of uterine electromyogram or electrohysterogram (EHG) recorded during gestation in monkeys. We have also evaluated a postprocessing algorithm that is especially suited for EHG analysis. Parameters are evaluated on real EHG signals in different gestational periods. The presented method gives good results when applied to synthetic as well as EHG signals. We have been able to obtain smaller ridge extraction errors when compared to two other methods specially developed for EHG. The gradient vector flow (GVF) snake method, or GVF-snake method, appears to be a good ridge extraction tool, which could be used on TFR of mono or multicomponent signals with good results. 相似文献

Clonal activation of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes depends on binding of peptide-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule complexes by their alpha/beta receptors, eventually resulting in sufficient aggregation to initiate second messenger generation. The nature of intracellular signals resulting from such T cell receptor (TCR) occupancy is believed to be independent of the specific structure of the ligand being bound, and to vary quantitatively, not qualitatively, with the concentration of ligand offered and the affinity of the receptor for the peptide-MHC molecule complex. In contrast to the expectations of this model, the analysis of the response of a T helper type 1 clone to mutant E alpha E beta k molecules in the absence or presence of a peptide antigen revealed that peptide inhibited the interleukin 2 (IL-2) response to an otherwise allostimulatory mutant form of this MHC class II molecule. The inhibition was not due to competition for formation of alloantigen, it required TCR recognition of peptide-mutant MHC molecule complexes, and it decreased IL-2 production without affecting receptor-dependent IL-3, IL-2 receptor alpha, or size enlargement responses. This preferential reduction in IL-2 secretion could be correlated with the costimulatory signal dependence of this cytokine response, but could not be overcome by crosslinking the CD28 molecule on the T cell. These results define a new class of TCR ligands with mixed agonist/antagonist properties, and point to a ligand-related variation in the quality of clonotypic receptor signaling events or their integration with other signaling processes. It was also found that a single TCR ligand showed greatly different dose thresholds for the elicitation of distinct effector responses from a cloned T cell population. The observations that changes in ligand structure can result in qualitative alterations in the effects of receptor occupancy and that quantitative variations in ligand density can be translated into qualitative differences in T cell responses have important implications for models of intrathymic selection and control of the results of active immunization. 相似文献

Keratinocytes play a critical role in re-epithelialization during wound healing, and alterations in keratinocyte proliferation and function are associated with the development of various skin diseases. Although it is well documented that TGF-beta has profound effects on keratinocyte growth and function, there is a paucity of information on the types, isoform specificity and complex formation of TGF-beta receptors on keratinocytes. Here, we report that in addition to the types I, II, and III TGF-beta receptors, early passage adult and neonatal human keratinocytes display a cell surface glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored 150 kDa TGF-beta1 binding protein. The identities of the four proteins were confirmed on the basis of their affinity for TGF-beta isoforms, immunoprecipitation with specific anti-receptor antibodies, sensitivity to phosphatidylinositol specific phospholipase C and dithiothreitol, and 2-dimensional electrophoresis. Interestingly, the antitype I TGF-beta receptor antibody immunoprecipitated not only the type I receptor, but also the type II receptor and the 150 kDa component, suggesting that the 150 kDa component form heteromeric complexes with the signalling receptors. In addition, two-dimensional (nonreducing/reducing) electrophoresis confirmed the occurrence of a heterotrimeric complex consisting of the 150 kDa TGF-beta1 binding protein, the type II receptor, and the type I receptor. This technique also demonstrated the occurrence of types I and II heterodimers and type I homodimers of TGF-beta receptors on keratinocytes, supporting the heterotetrameric model of TGF-beta signalling proposed using mutant cells and cells transfected to overexpress these receptors. The keratinocytes responded to TGF-beta by markedly downregulating all four TGF-beta binding proteins and by potently inhibiting DNA synthesis. The demonstration that the 150 kDa GPI-anchored TGF-beta1 binding protein forms a heteromeric complex with the TGF-beta signalling receptors suggests that this GPI-anchored protein may modify TGF-beta signalling in human keratinocytes. 相似文献
