Globally, postharvest loss reduction has been emphasized as an effective option for improving food security and environmental sustainability. Yam production in the Zabzugu district of Northern Ghana suffers from high postharvest losses, with varying degrees of economic, social and environmental implications. Improving the welfare of farmers through postharvest loss reduction requires farmers’ effective management of the losses. The purpose of this study is to examine how effectively farmers manage postharvest losses and the rewards derived from such efforts. Using a cross-section of 201 randomly selected yam farmers from major production communities in the Zabzugu district of Northern Ghana, we applied a simultaneous equation modelling approach to examine the contemporaneous correlation between postharvest loss management and income. Results provided evidence that good postharvest loss management improves welfare of yam farmers through increased income earnings and vice versa, especially for those who produce for commercial purposes. On the other hand, subsistence farmers were better at managing postharvest losses, though with lower monetary rewards. The policy implications are that interventions should target farmer education and training to improve the skills of farmers in managing postharvest losses.  相似文献

In this paper, a new approach for characterizing dispersion in nano-enhanced polymers and polymer composites using nanomechanical characterization is developed. Dispersion of Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as a model nanoscale ingredient is characterized in two model polymer systems: (a) a thermoplastic polymer processed using a Twin Screw Extruder, and (b) a thermoset epoxy processed using sonication during solvent processing. For the first time, the modulus of agglomerated nanofibers was isolated from the polymer matrix enhanced with dispersed nanofibers by using nanomechanical characterization. Thus, it was possible to use these nanomechanical properties in a microstructural model using a Rule-of-Mixtures (ROM) formulation to determine the fraction of dispersed nanofibers, which yielded a dispersion limit of 3 vol% CNFs in the nano-enhanced thermoplastic polymer and 3.5 vol% CNFs in the nano-enhanced thermoset epoxy. It was also possible to predict the modulus measured using microtensile testing, and to determine an effective modulus of 30 GPa for the CNFs, which was attributed to a spring-like effect from kinking along the nanofibers. Applying this characterization to control of dispersion through sonication in the nano-enhanced thermoset epoxy, it was possible to determine the degree of dispersion with sonication time which was described using an Avrami equation. Finally, a carbon-fiber mat was used to create a model nano-enhanced polymer composite whose properties were found to be insensitive to sonication time due to filtering effects from the carbon-fiber mat and varied with CNF concentration in a manner where the CNF modulus could be extrapolated to 30 GPa, consistent with the nano-enhanced polymers.  相似文献

Poor conspicuity of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTW) is one of the main factors contributing to their involvement in accidents. The current study examined the influence of different rider's outfits on PTWs’ detectability, and evaluated the potential of a unique Alternating-Blinking Lights System (ABLS) to increase the rider's conspicuity. This study included two experiments that examined the visual search involved in the process of scanning video clips of dynamic traffic scenes. The first experiment examined PTWs’ attention conspicuity, while the second evaluated PTWs’ search conspicuity. In the attention conspicuity experiment participants were not alerted to the possible presence of a PTW and were asked to report the types of vehicles that were present in each video clip. In the search conspicuity experiment the participants were asked to actively search for a PTW and report its presence or absence in each video clip. Every participant was presented with a series of 96 video clips, 48 with a PTW and 48 without (controls). The independent variables were: (i) level of ambient illumination, (ii) road type, (iii) PTW's initial distance from the viewer, and (iv) rider's outfit. The results of the attention conspicuity experiment indicated that the environmental context has a strong effect on the probability of detecting the PTW. The ABLS increased the PTWs’ attention conspicuity by moderating the effects of environmental context, and was most effective at dusk and in urban environments. The results of the search experiment indicated that detection rates decreased and reaction time (RT) increased as the level of luminance decreased. RT was shortest with the ABLS across all driving environments. The ABLS increased PTWs detection rates in both experiments and mitigated the difference in detection rates between the attention and search conspicuity experiments. The results indicated that the ABLS was the most potent conspicuity treatment of the ones evaluated in this study. In conclusion, PTW conspicuity should be enhanced by incorporating aspects of both attention and search conspicuity. The riders need to take into consideration the perceptual characteristics of their riding environment, and be equipped with a conspicuity aid that is less susceptible to the changing environment and provides the rider with a unique visual signature. In parallel, the expectancy of car drivers to the presence of PTWs should be increased.  相似文献

The addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) or carbon nanofibers (CNFs) to polymeric melts offers a convenient route to obtain highly conductive plastics. However, when these materials are melt processed, their conductivity can be lost. Here, it is shown that conductivities can be recovered through melt annealing at temperatures above the polymer's glass transition temperature (Tg). We demonstrate these results for both MWCNT and CNF-based composites in polystyrene (PS). The mechanism behind the conductivity increase is elucidated through modeling. It involves a transition from aligned, unconnected particles prior to annealing to an interconnected network after annealing through viscoelastic relaxation of the polymer. Such re-arrangement is directly visualized for the case of the CNF-based composites using confocal microscopy. The annealing-induced increase in particle connectivity is also reflected in dynamic rheological measurements on both MWCNT and CNF composites as an increase in their elastic moduli at low frequencies.  相似文献

To evaluate the contributions of common noise sources to total annual noise exposures among urban residents and workers, we estimated exposures associated with five common sources (use of mass transit, occupational and nonoccupational activities, MP3 player and stereo use, and time at home and doing other miscellaneous activities) among a sample of over 4500 individuals in New York City (NYC). We then evaluated the contributions of each source to total noise exposure and also compared our estimated exposures to the recommended 70 dBA annual exposure limit. We found that one in ten transit users had noise exposures in excess of the recommended exposure limit from their transit use alone. When we estimated total annual exposures, 90% of NYC transit users and 87% of nonusers exceeded the recommended limit. MP3 player and stereo use, which represented a small fraction of the total annual hours for each subject on average, was the primary source of exposure among the majority of urban dwellers we evaluated. Our results suggest that the vast majority of urban mass transit riders may be at risk of permanent, irreversible noise-induced hearing loss and that, for many individuals, this risk is driven primarily by exposures other than occupational noise.  相似文献

There has been a great deal of effort focused on engineering polymer composites with hierarchical microstructures consisting of one or more ingredients that can be organized differently across multiple length scales. However, there are hierarchical microstructures that have evolved over eons in biological materials. These unique structure–property relationships may serve as templates for engineering hierarchically structured polymer composites with tailored properties. One such biological material is the Palmetto wood of South Carolina, which was successfully used as a protective structure during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to absorb cannon shot. Through an assembly of microfibers into macrofibers embedded in a cellulose matrix, the Palmetto wood has optimized its ability to resist failure when subjected to extreme dynamic loading events, such as hurricanes. Understanding of the dynamic and static structure–property relationship in Palmetto wood can facilitate the development of new hierarchically structured polymer composites with increased resistance to failure. Therefore, the structure–property relationship in Palmetto wood has been studied using novel multiscale microstructural and mechanical characterization techniques. Models have been developed that indicate that the hierarchical structure of Palmetto wood obeys the linear Rule-of-Mixtures across multiple length scales. This understanding has led to the development of new polymer composite structures that exhibit properties similar to Palmetto wood using conventional laminated carbon fiber–epoxy composites and new polymer nanocomposites consisting of carbon nanofibers. The use of the nanofibers appears to enhance the interaction between the composite components in a manner similar to the interaction between fibers in the Palmetto wood that enables the laminated composite to behave more like the individual layers by resisting the tendency to delaminate and increasing the Weibull statistical parameters closer to those observed in Palmetto wood.  相似文献

Traditionally, extended pedigrees with many affected individuals have been studied for the purpose of detection of linkage. For traits caused by a rare susceptibility allele, this is a productive strategy. However, this sampling strategy may not work well for traits determined by multiple loci in which one or more have common susceptibility alleles. We simulated three single-additive-locus models of inheritance and two-locus models with additive or multiplicative interactions, all with rare or common susceptibility alleles. A trait locus was linked, with no recombination, to a marker locus with four equally frequent alleles. Family structure varied, but the total number of affected individuals was held constant. Two generations of individuals were genotyped. We used three nonparametric affected-sib-pair programs and two nonparametric pedigree-analysis programs to perform linkage analysis. For single-locus, additive, and multiplicative models, we found that, when the susceptibility allele was rare, (frequency .0025), extended pedigrees with first or second cousins had the most power for detection of linkage. However, when the susceptibility allele was common in the single-locus, additive, and multiplicative two-locus models (frequency .25), extended pedigrees were no more powerful than nuclear families. There was also a decrease in power when the pedigrees had a greater number of affected individuals, more so for the single-locus and multiplicative models than for the additive model. We conclude that for single-locus, additive, and multiplicative models of qualitative traits with common alleles, there is no benefit to the collection of extended pedigrees, and there may be a loss of power in the collection of pedigrees with many affected individuals.  相似文献

Linear discrete‐time systems with stochastic and deterministic polytopic type uncertainties in their state‐space model are considered. A dynamic output‐feedback controller is obtained via a new approach that allows a derivation of a controller in spite of parameter uncertainty. In the proposed approach, the system is described via a difference equation and an augmented system is then used to obtain the output‐feedback controller parameters. The controller is obtained without assuming a specific structure to the quadratic Lyapunov function, and it is the first time that an output‐feedback controller is obtained for robust state‐multiplicative systems. The controller minimizes the stochastic L2‐gain of the closed‐loop where a cost function is defined to be the expected value of the standard performance index with respect to the stochastic uncertainty. XBn or XBp barrier detectors exhibit diffusion-limited dark currents comparable with mercury cadmium telluride Rule-07 and high quantum efficiencies. In 2011, SemiConductor Devices (SCD) introduced “HOT Pelican D”, a 640 × 512/15-μm pitch InAsSb/AlSbAs XBn mid-wave infrared (MWIR) detector with a 4.2-μm cut-off and an operating temperature of ~150 K. Its low power (~3 W), high pixel operability (>99.5%) and long mean time to failure make HOT Pelican D a highly reliable integrated detector-cooler product with a low size, weight and power. More recently, “HOT Hercules” was launched with a 1280 × 1024/15-μm format and similar advantages. A 3-megapixel, 10-μm pitch version (“HOT Blackbird”) is currently completing development. For long-wave infrared applications, SCD’s 640 × 512/15-μm pitch “Pelican-D LW” XBp type II superlattice (T2SL) detector has a ~9.3-μm cut-off wavelength. The detector contains InAs/GaSb and InAs/AlSb T2SLs, and is fabricated into focal plane array (FPA) detectors using standard production processes including hybridization to a digital silicon read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), glue underfill and substrate thinning. The ROIC has been designed so that the complete detector closely follows the interfaces of SCD’s MWIR Pelican-D detector family. The Pelican-D LW FPA has a quantum efficiency of ~50%, and operates at 77 K with a pixel operability of >99% and noise equivalent temperature difference of 13 mK at 30 Hz and F/2.7.  相似文献
