This study investigates the effect of cement additive on some properties of asphalt binder using Superpave testing methods. Six cement-to-asphalt (C/A) ratios were considered in the study: 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30 by volume of asphalt binder. The experimental tests that were conducted in the study included the Superpave rotational viscosity (RV) test and the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test. The RV test was conducted at the Superpave-specified high temperature of 135 °C that represents the average mixing and laydown temperature, and at seven different rotational speeds of 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 60, and 100 rpm. On the other hand, the DSR test was conducted at four test temperatures of 58, 64, 70, and 76 °C; one lower and two higher than the Superpave high performance grade (PG) temperature of the asphalt binder used in the study (PG 64). The loading frequency used in the DSR test was 10 rad/s (1.59 Hz) as specified by the Superpave system. Results of the study showed that the addition of Portland cement to asphalt binders increased the rotational viscosity (RV) of asphalt binders at 135 °C and different rotational speeds. The C/A ratio of 0.15 was found to be the optimum ratio that achieved a balanced increase in the rotational viscosity and the value of the DSR G*/sin δ rutting parameter of asphalt binders. The C/A ratio had insignificant effects on the Newtonian behavior, the phase angle (δ), and the elastic behavior of asphalt binders. The increase in C/A ratio increased the stiffness of asphalt binders represented by the complex shear modulus (G*) value. The increase in the C/A ratio improved the rutting parameter, G*/sin δ value, at all temperatures. The increase in C/A ratio improved the Superpave high PG temperature (the high temperature at which the asphalt binder passed the Superpave criteria for G*/sin δ value). It was also shown that the best function that described the relationship between each of RV, G*, and G*/sin δ and the C/A ratio was the exponential function with high coefficient of determination (R2).  相似文献

The Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is deploying a flexible learning scheme for selected pilot courses in engineering education. In such a scheme, traditional lectures and written exercises are combined with additional Web-based learning resources. The main objective of this initiative is to sustain the evolution from traditional teaching to active learning and to better integrate the increasing number of educational resources available online. In engineering education, a key activity to sustain the learning process is hands-on experimentation carried out using either simulation tools or real equipment. This paper describes how a collaborative Web-based experimentation environment has been introduced at the EPFL for providing more flexibility to students performing laboratory experiments in automatic control, biomechanics, and fluid mechanics. It particularly describes the eJournal, a Web service integrated in the proposed learning environment that enables the collection and sharing of preparatory notes and experimental results with both peers and teaching assistants.  相似文献

We applied an Eulerian–Eulerian two‐fluid model on an upward dispersed oil–water flow in vertical pipe with 80 mm diameter and 2.5 m length. The numerical profiles of the radial distribution of the oil drops at 1.5 m from the inflow are compared to the experimental data of Lucas and Panagiotopoulos (Flow Meas Instrum. 2009;20:127–135) This article analyzes the roles of turbulence and interfacial forces on the phase distribution phenomenon. In liquid–liquid flow the relative velocity is low and the distribution of the dispersed phase is mainly governed by the turbulence. This work highlights the important role of the turbulent contribution obtained by averaging the added mass force on the radial distribution profiles of the oil drops. The numerical results present improved profiles of the dispersed phase comparing to the experimental data when this turbulent contribution is taken into account in the momentum balance. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 4214–4223, 2017  相似文献

Particle mass, mobility, volatile mass fraction, effective density, mass concentration, mass–mobility exponent, and particle morphology were measured from soot generated from a premixed flame (McKenna burner) and an inverted diffusion flame over a range of equivalence ratios. It was found that the mass fraction of volatile material on the soot from the McKenna burner could be up to 0.83 at a high equivalence ratio, but there was no measurable volatile material on the soot from the inverted burner. The inverted burner can produce soot at different mass–mobility exponents, ranging from 2.23 to 2.54, over a range of global equivalence ratios of 0.53–0.67, while the mass–mobility exponent ranges from 2.19 to 2.99 for fresh soot and 2.19 to 2.81 for denuded soot for the McKenna burner at equivalence ratios of 2.0–3.75. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of inverted burner soot shows that a range of particle morphologies is present at a given global equivalence ratio, likely due to different local equivalence ratios and flame conditions in the diffusion flame. Primary particle diameter tends to increase with aggregate size, which could contribute to the mass–mobility exponent being well above 2.

COVID-19, resulting from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a major pandemic that the world is fighting. SARS-CoV-2 primarily causes lung infection by attaching to the ACE2 receptor on the alveolar epithelial cells. However, the ACE2 receptor is also present in intestinal epithelial cells, suggesting a link between nutrition, virulence and clinical outcomes of COVID-19. Respiratory viral infections perturb the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota is shaped by our diet; therefore, a healthy gut is important for optimal metabolism, immunology and protection of the host. Malnutrition causes diverse changes in the immune system by repressing immune responses and enhancing viral vulnerability. Thus, improving gut health with a high-quality, nutrient-filled diet will improve immunity against infections and diseases. This review emphasizes the significance of dietary choices and its subsequent effects on the immune system, which may potentially impact SARS-CoV-2 vulnerability.  相似文献
