Longitudinal factor structure of posttraumatic stress symptoms related to intimate partner violence.

Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) studies have suggested that a model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is characterized by 4 factors is preferable to competing models. However, the composition of these 4 factors has varied across studies, with 1 model splitting avoidance and numbing symptoms (e.g., D. W. King, G. A. Leskin, L. A. King, & F. W. Weathers, 1998) and the other including a dysphoria factor that combines numbing and nonspecific hyperarousal symptoms (L. J. Simms, D. Watson, & B. N. Doebbeling, 2002). Using the PTSD Checklist (F. W. Weathers, B. T. Litz, D. S. Herman, J. A. Huska, & T. M. Keane, 1993) and CFA, the authors compared these models with competing models. A model of PTSD with 4 intercorrelated factors of Intrusions, Avoidance, Dysphoria, and Hyperarousal was found superior among 396 medical patients who screened positive for intimate partner violence (IPV) and 405 women seeking services for IPV. 100‐MHz CMOS circuits directly fabricated on plastic using sequential laterally solidified silicon

Abstract— CMOS TFT circuits were fabricated on plastic using sequential laterally solidified silicon combined with a low‐temperature CMOS process. The unity‐gain frequencies of the best of NMOS TFTs are greater than 250 MHz, and the CMOS ring oscillators operate at 100 MHz. To the best of the authors' knowledge, these are the highest‐frequency circuits ever fabricated directly on plastic. This high‐performance CMOS‐on‐plastic process can be applied to the fabrication of AMLCD integrated drivers and AMOLED pixels on plastic substrates.     

The Frustration of Talent: A Study in Scarlet

Many organisations are under pressure as they face strong buyers’ markets. This paper presents the findings of a research project designed to discover why talent is so often frustrated by mediocre management and what might be done about it. ICI and Marks & Spencer were selected as the setting, as both are well‐respected corporations and are facing stiff business challenges. The paper explores the locking hold that cultures can exert on operational management. It opens with a profile of each organisation before passing the consultancy brief to an imaginary business detective, Sherlock Holmes. By means of various devices the famous detective applies his powers to the case and the paper closes with a summary of his findings.     

Evaluating Safety of Concrete Gravity Dam on Weak Rock: Scott Dam

Scott Dam is owned and operated by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) as part of the Potter Valley Project. Although it is an unimpressive concrete gravity dam [233 m (765 ft) long with maximum water surface 33.4 m (110 ft) above tailwater], the dam has unusually complex and weak foundation rocks; this condition caused design changes during construction, numerous subsequent special investigations, and several corrections and additions. A main stumbling block to clarification of the dam safety issue for Scott Dam has always been difficulty in characterizing the foundation material. This paper discusses an approach to this problem as well as how the safety of the dam was subsequently confirmed, following a comprehensive program of research, investigations, and analysis from 1991 to 1997.     

Outcome of parent-mediated treatment of preschoolers with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity.

Despite the early onset of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH), there is a dearth of treatment studies with preschoolers with this disorder. Forty-six families with ADDH preschoolers were randomly assigned to either an immediate or a delayed group parent training program aimed at improving child compliance. Groups were balanced on demographic variables. Treatment outcome was evaluated by comparing the groups at pre- and posttreatment and 3-month follow-up on measures of parent–child interactions during free play, a compliance task, and parent-supervised activities, as well as on parent-completed Conners Hyperkinesis Index (C. H. Goyette et al; see record 1980-22450-001) scores. Positive treatment effect was obtained on measures of compliance, parental style of interaction, and management skills. These improvements were maintained at 3-month follow-up. Evaluation of treatment effects on nontargeted child behaviors indicated no generalization.
