Ethical dilemmas in the delivery room

The novel uracil analog, 6-chloro-5-(2-propenyl)uracil (TI90), inhibited the growth of myeloid leukemia cells and induced morphologic and functional differentiation of the cells. Although TI90 was a weak inducer of differentiation, it greatly enhanced the growth inhibition and differentiation of the leukemia cells previously induced by 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (VD3) or all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). TI90 cooperated with VD3 much more effectively than with ATRA in inhibiting cell growth and inducing differentiation. It also decreased the effective concentration of VD3 to the 10(-10) M level. On the other hand, there was no significant synergy between VD3 and the other uracil analogs. TI90 did not affect VD3 metabolism or the number and affinity of VD3 receptors (VDR) in HL-60 cells. Signals from VD3 are predominantly mediated by VDR and the ligand-activated binding of VDR to vitamin D-responsive element (VDRE) as a heterodimer with the retinoid X receptor (RXR). According to the results of a gel shift assay, TI90 enhanced the intensity of the retarded band with synthetic VDRE oligomer in the presence of VD3, suggesting that TI90 increases the number of phosphorylated receptors by inhibiting phosphatase activity, and also stimulates the formation of a functional complex of VDR with RXR.     

Prefrontal cortex and caudate nucleus in conditional associative learning: Dissociated effects of selective brain lesions in rats.

Rats with lesions to prefrontal cortex (PFC) or caudate nucleus (CN) were compared on tests of conditional associative learning (CAL) that placed varying demands on conditional rule learning and working-with-memory operations that are essential for response selection. Damage to either structure impaired performance, but the respective deficits resulted from disruption of different processes. CN lesions produced a consistent learning deficit that was thought to reflect a basic impairment in forming stimulus-response (S-R) associations. The behavior of PFC rats was more variable and depended on task requirements. When S-R learning or response selection was relatively easy, the PFC was not critical. However, when either component was made more difficult, thus requiring the contribution of strategic processes, PFC damage produced profound impairments. In addition to clarifying the roles of the PFC and CN in CAL, the results provide further evidence that multiple brain regions participate in relatively simple behavioral tasks and that their respective contributions can be dissociated. Induced magnetic fields as evidence for subsurface oceans in Europa and Callisto

The Galileo spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since 7 December 1995, and encounters one of the four galilean satellites-Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto-on each orbit. Initial results from the spacecraft's magnetometer have indicated that neither Europa nor Callisto have an appreciable internal magnetic field, in contrast to Ganymede and possibly Io. Here we report perturbations of the external magnetic fields (associated with Jupiter's inner magnetosphere) in the vicinity of both Europa and Callisto. We interpret these perturbations as arising from induced magnetic fields, generated by the moons in response to the periodically varying plasma environment. Electromagnetic induction requires eddy currents to flow within the moons, and our calculations show that the most probable explanation is that there are layers of significant electrical conductivity just beneath the surfaces of both moons. We argue that these conducting layers may best be explained by the presence of salty liquid-water oceans, for which there is already indirect geological evidence in the case of Europa.     

The association of intra-abdominal infection and abdominal wound dehiscence

Concurrent infection is a risk factor for abdominal wound dehiscence. We reviewed our experience with fascial dehiscence to determine the incidence and to identify prognostic factors for associated intra-abdominal infection. Over a 7-year period, 107 patients with abdominal wound dehiscence were identified. Seventeen were managed nonoperatively, and 90 underwent exploratory laparotomy, 43 of whom had no intra-abdominal pathology and 47 of whom had intra-abdominal infections. Demographic factors, comorbid diseases, and potential indicators of systemic infection did not distinguish patients with intra-abdominal infection from those without. Patients with an intra-abdominal infection were more likely to have undergone an emergency operation (74% vs 48%; P < 0.02), an operation on the colon (55% vs 25%; P < 0.005), or an operation with a higher wound classification (P < 0.02). Mortality was higher in patients with intra-abdominal infection than in those without (44% vs 20%; P < 0.02). Wound dehiscence after emergent operations, and operations with a higher wound classification, especially those involving the colon, should raise concern for intra-abdominal infection. Thorough abdominal exploration should be performed at the time of dehiscence repair. Before nonoperative management is chosen, intra-abdominal infection should be excluded.     

Optically pumped submillimeter gas lasers and the prospects for constructing space-qualifiable LO systems

An optically pumped submillimeter laser operating in the 500 μm (600 GHz) to 100 μm (3 THz) spectral range is the primary and, at present, the only available local oscillator (LO) source for laboratory and astronomical heterodyne applications for this wavelength region. A short review of the state-of-the-art of submillimeter lasers as LO sources, with an emphasis given to receiver systems designed for airborne heterodyne observations, will be presented. The characteristics and prospects for constructing a spacequalifiable laser LO system will also be given.     

Corrosion of Fe-10Al-Cr alloys by coal char

Corrosion of iron-base alloys at 982°C (1800°F) by coal char is observed and the phase morphologies are discussed. No sulfidation was observed at 50 hr exposure. After 100 hr internal aluminum-rich sulfides were observed along with thick outer scales of iron oxide. The species causing the hightemperature-induced corrosion are probably sulfides and sulfates, present in most coal chars. Possible mechanisms for the corrosion are also discussed.Department of Materials Science and Mineral Engineering.     

Mechanical properties of certain oriented crystalline polymers

The yield stress is a simple function of the deformation ratio in the direction of testing for specimens oriented by uniaxial or biaxial stretching or rolling. Unless the yield stress increases more rapidly than in proportion to the deformation ratio, there will be instability during tensile creep under high loads. The relative merit of various polymers differs for creep and stress relaxation. Fatigue and bend recovery are also related to the molecular structure.
