There is an increasing demand on citizens to participate in social network websites and to create and share their own user-generated content (UGC), such as photographs, videos, and blogs. So far, little is known about how elderly people respond to these new trends and master the techniques required. This paper reports on three studies that investigated elderly people’s user requirements related to consumption, sharing and co-creation of UGC in new media. The first study, conducted in Norway, identifies patterns of Internet usage, age differences, and participation in online communities and the consumption, sharing and co-creation of UGC on a macro level. The second study, conducted in Belgium, investigated the social requirements of elderly people on a group level. The third study, also conducted in Belgium, investigated user and context requirements on an individual level. The results of the first study show that the elderly rarely participate in online communities and share audio-visual UGC. However, they embrace some aspects of the new media and more often express themselves politically. The results of the second study show that the elderly are very motivated to contribute with UGC, given the right circumstances. The results of the third study show that it is important for elderly people that they be able to use the new technologies easily and identifies their worries about using them.  相似文献

Dealing with uncertainties in water management is an important issue and is one which will only increase in light of global changes, particularly climate change. So far, uncertainties in water management have mostly been assessed from a scientific point of view, and in quantitative terms. In this paper, we focus on the perspectives from water management practice, adopting a qualitative approach. We consider it important to know how uncertainties are framed in water management practice in order to develop practice relevant strategies for dealing with uncertainties. Framing refers to how people make sense of the world. With the aim of identifying what are important parameters for the framing of uncertainties in water management practice, in this paper we analyze uncertainty situations described by decision-makers in water management. The analysis builds on a series of “Uncertainty Dialogues” carried out within the NeWater project with water managers in the Rhine, Elbe and Guadiana basins in 2006. During these dialogues, representatives of these river basins were asked what uncertainties they encountered in their professional work life and how they confronted them. Analysing these dialogues we identified several important parameters of how uncertainties get framed. Our assumption is that making framing of uncertainty explicit for water managers will allow for better dealing with the respective uncertainty situations.  相似文献

Recently, Vansteenkiste et al. (2013) explored how visual behaviour guides bicycle steering when cycling at different speeds through 15 m long lanes of 10, 25 and 40 cm wide. Participants were found to shift their gaze direction towards the end of the lanes at higher speeds, towards the near pathway on narrow lanes and more towards irrelevant areas on wider lanes. To investigate to what extent young learner bicyclists adapt their visual behaviour in a similar way as adults, the experiment was repeated with seven eight-year-old children, and results were compared to the adult data. Children were found to cycle slower through narrow lanes than adults. However, with increasing lane width and cycling speed, children made the same shifts of visual gaze direction as the adults. These results suggest that for a simple precision steering task, children are able to adopt a similar visual-motor strategy as adults, provided that they cycle at their own pace.  相似文献

Over the last few years, advanced digital applications have become available to tourists. Some of these offer the possibility of creating personalised routes. This paper introduces a tourist expert system, called the City Trip Planner, that allows planning routes for five cities in Belgium. It is implemented as a web application that takes into account the interests and trip constraints of the user and matches these to a database of locations in order to predict personal interests. A fast and effective planning algorithm provides an on-the-fly suggestion of a personal trip for a requested number of days, taking into account opening hours of attractions and time for a (lunch) break. The expert system is discussed in detail. Usage statistics and user feedback demonstrate that it is highly appreciated by tourists.  相似文献

Natural flow regimes are important for sustaining riverine vegetation. The regulation of river flows to provide water for agriculture often results in changes to flow timing. This study assesses the impact of altered seasonal flow patterns on riverine flora. Within temperate Australia, we surveyed the vegetation of five lowland rivers, three of which have large dams that alter their seasonal flow patterns; the other two are unregulated. From four to six sites were selected on each river, and these were classified into three levels of regulation based on the extent to which the timing of their seasonal flow patterns were altered. Sites were surveyed in winter and the following summer. Permanent quadrats were also established at a number of the surveyed sites and resurveyed every 3 months. Of the 267 plant taxa identified, 145 were exotic (non‐native). More exotic taxa and fewer native taxa were associated with increasing level of seasonal flow inversion (regulation). In particular, greater numbers of short‐lived exotic terrestrial taxa and fewer native woody taxa were associated with increasing level of regulation. Some exotic woody species (e.g. willows) were more common in the unregulated rivers and may have life‐history traits favoured by the natural seasonal flow patterns of study area. Multivariate analyses showed that level of regulation had a significant effect on the overall composition of the riverine vegetation. Our results provide support for the hypotheses that flow regulation adversely affects native species diversity and increases the vulnerability of riparian zones to invasion by exotic species; however, these effects are dependent on plant species' life‐history strategies. Our study highlights the importance of natural seasonal flow patterns for sustaining native riverine plant communities. Flow management aimed at maintaining or restoring ecological values should consider seasonal flow patterns. Winter/spring flow peaks may be particularly important for the recruitment of native riverine plants, especially trees and shrubs, and reducing the extent of exotic annuals and grasses. We present a memetic approach for multi-objective improvement of robustness influencing features (called robustness objectives) in airline schedules. Improvement of the objectives is obtained by simultaneous flight retiming and aircraft rerouting, subject to a fixed fleet assignment. Approximations of the Pareto optimal front are obtained by applying a multi-meme memetic algorithm. We investigate biased meme selection to encourage exploration of the boundaries of the search space and compare it with random meme selection. An external population of high quality solutions is maintained using the adaptive grid archiving algorithm.The presented approach is applied to investigate simultaneous improvement of reliability and flexibility in real world schedules from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Experimental results show that the approach enables us to obtain schedules with significant improvements for the considered objectives. A large scale simulation study was undertaken to quantify the influence of the robustness objectives on the operational performance of the schedules. Rigorous sensitivity analysis of the results shows that the influence of the schedule reliability is dominant and that increased schedule flexibility could improve the operational performance.  相似文献

Strip packing intends to minimise the height required for placing a set of rectangular items into a strip with infinite height. The present paper introduces a fast, yet effective shaking algorithm for the two- and three-dimensional strip packing problems, which are both NP-hard. The proposed heuristic procedure starts from an ordered item list, from which it alternates between forward and backward construction phases. The algorithm builds upon the common (deepest) bottom-left-fill algorithm, but shows significantly better results. Improvements on the solution quality of more than 9% can be observed. Moreover, applying the shaking procedure as a post processing algorithm to existing high performance heuristics also leads to improvements.  相似文献
