The treatment chemical ozone has now been successfully used in the United States in municipal water and wastewater plants for many years. To insure continuous, successful operations of these applications, operating obstacles had to be dealt with and overcome.

In this paper, examples of field operating problems and their solutions are described. The experiences at specific municipal water and wastewater installations are reviewed in detail. Discussed for each example are : the background and effects of the problem, the problem-solving process, and the eventual resolution of the problem. The examples include simple unit operations to entire processes.

By observing the ozone installation's operation several years after start-up, the design of future ozone systems can be improved and operating problems minimized.  相似文献

The performance of adhesively-bonded joints under monotonic and cyclic-fatigue loading has been investigated using a fracture-mechanics approach. The joints consisted of an epoxy film adhesive which was employed to bond aluminium-alloy substrates. The effects of undertaking cyclic-fatigue tests in (a) a ‘dry’ environment of 55% relative humidity at 23°C, and (b) a ‘wet’ environment of immersion in distilled water at 28°C were investigated. In particular, the influence of employing different surface pretreatments for the aluminium-alloy substrates was examined. In addition, single-lap joints were tested under cyclic fatigue loading in the two test environments, and a back-face strain technique has been used which revealed that crack propagation, rather than crack initiation, occupied the dominant proportion of the fatigue lifetime of the single-lap joints. In Part II, the data obtained in the present Part I paper will be employed to predict theoretically the lifetime of the adhesively-bonded single-lap joint specimens.  相似文献

De‐N‐acetylases of β‐(1→6)‐D ‐N‐acetylglucosamine polymers (PNAG) and β‐(1→4)‐D ‐N‐acetylglucosamine residues in peptidoglycan are attractive targets for antimicrobial agents. PNAG de‐N‐acetylases are necessary for biofilm formation in numerous pathogenic bacteria. Peptidoglycan de‐N‐acetylation facilitates bacterial evasion of innate immune defenses. To target these enzymes, transition‐state analogue inhibitors containing a methylphosphonamidate have been synthesized through a direct Staudinger–phosphonite reaction. The inhibitors were tested on purified PgaB, a PNAG de‐N‐acetylase from Escherichia coli, and PgdA, a peptidoglycan de‐N‐acetylase from Streptococcus pneumonia. Herein, we describe the most potent inhibitor of peptidoglycan de‐N‐acetylases reported to date (Ki=80 μM ). The minimal inhibition of PgaB observed provides insight into key structural and functional differences in these enzymes that will need to be considered during the development of future inhibitors.  相似文献

Ahiflower oil, a novel and proprietary dietary oil with the richest effective combined essential fatty acids from a single non‐GM plant, has been developed agronomically in a unique vertically integrated “soil to oil” model at commercial scale by Nature's Crops International. Ahiflower oil helps resolve a persistent dilemma in sustainable global omega‐3 nutrition from marine sources while dramatically improving dietary omega‐3 EPA conversion from plant sources and while supplying beneficial anti‐inflammatory GLA not found in fish or algal oils. Having achieved key regulatory clearances in the US and EU, Ahiflower oil is launching in the latter half of 2015 in supplements and foods.  相似文献

An Ultrafine Water-based Condensation Particle Counter (UWCPC), a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) incorporating an UWCPC, and a Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS) were deployed to determine the number and size distribution of ultrafine particles. Comparisons of particle number concentrations measured by the UWCPC, SMPS, and FMPS were conducted to evaluate the performance of the two particle sizers using ambient particles as well as lab generated artificial particles. The SMPS number concentration was substantially lower than the FMPS (FMPS/SMPS = 1.56) measurements mainly due to the diffusion losses of particles in the SMPS. The diffusion loss corrected SMPS (C-SMPS) number concentration was on average ~ 15% higher than the FMPS data (FMPS/C-SMPS = 0.87). Good correlation between the C-SMPS and FMPS was also observed for the total particle number concentrations in the size range 6 nm to 100 nm measured at a road-side urban site (r2 = 0.91). However, the particle size distribution measured by the C-SMPS was quite different from the size distribution measured by the FMPS. An empirical correction factor for each size bin was obtained by comparing the FMPS data to size-segregated UWCPC number concentrations for atmospheric particles. The application of the correction factor to the FMPS data (C-FMPS) greatly improved the agreement of the C-SMPS and C-FMPS size distributions. The agreement of the total particle concentrations also improved to well within 10% (C-FMPS/C-SMPS = 0.95).  相似文献

This paper compares the modification mechanism provided by ethylene‐octene (EO) copolymer to that of ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) rubber. Within the limits of this study, the highest impact strength was achieved at 30–40% rubber content, regardless of the rubber type. An increase in rubber melt viscosity resulted in overall greater impact strength. At the optimum concentration, the high‐viscosity (MFI = 1 to 5) EO rubber provided modification mainly via a crazing mechanism, while the EPDM rubber functioned by energy dissipation through the three‐dimensional network structure formed with the polypropylene matrix. This paper also discusses the effects of the processing conditions on the physical properties of PP/EPR copolymer. An increase in processing temperature and screw speed resulted in a reduced number of discrete rubber particles and nearly no or very slight increase in impact strength, but a very significant reduction in tensile strength and tensile modulus.  相似文献

A dual-phase high-entropy boride (HEB)/carbide (HEC) ceramic with a fine grain size was synthesized by a sequential boro/carbothermal process. In the first step, an Hf–Nb–Ta–Ti–Zr-containing carbide was synthesized by a carbothermal reduction of oxides followed by the reaction of the carbide with B4C and ZrH2 to convert part of the carbide to boride. The resulting composition was ∼29 vol% HEB with an average grain size of ∼1.1 μm. Solid solution formation occurred at the densification temperature of 1900°C resulting in a relative density higher than 99%. The Vickers hardness was 26.5 ± 1.4 GPa. This is the first report of synthesizing dual-phase boride–carbide high-entropy ceramics from carbothermally synthesized, HEC powders.  相似文献

The bottromycins are a family of highly modified peptide natural products, which display potent antimicrobial activity against Gram‐positive bacteria, including methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Bottromycins have recently been shown to be ribosomally synthesized and post‐translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). Unique amongst RiPPs, the precursor peptide BotA contains a C‐terminal “follower” sequence, rather than the canonical N‐terminal “leader” sequence. We report herein the structural and biochemical characterization of BotP, a leucyl‐aminopeptidase‐like enzyme from the bottromycin pathway. We demonstrate that BotP is responsible for the removal of the N‐terminal methionine from the precursor peptide. Determining the crystal structures of both apo BotP and BotP in complex with Mn2+ allowed us to model a BotP/substrate complex and to rationalize substrate recognition. Our data represent the first step towards targeted compound modification to unlock the full antibiotic potential of bottro‐ mycin.  相似文献

In order to gain insight into membrane fiber failure (i.e., loss of integrity), properties of five hollow fiber membranes and four hollow fiber modules were evaluated. Specifically, membrane material, membrane symmetry, fiber modulus of elasticity, fiber diameter and thickness, module potting technique, module flow pattern (inside-out or outside-in), and coliform breakthrough were investigated. The approach combined evaluation of the above properties with mathematical modeling of structure-fluid interactions to comprehensively evaluate the properties most important for maintaining hollow fiber membrane integrity. Tensile strength testing revealed that the strongest fiber was an asymmetric polyacrylonitrile membrane fiber. The weakest fiber was a symmetric polyethylene membrane fiber. Pilot plant testing on the four membrane modules revealed that membrane symmetry may be a more important factor than potting technique for hollow fiber integrity. Results from the SEM and tensile testing were used as input to a finite element analysis model used to evaluate time-dependent structure-fluid interactions. It was found that additional stresses at the juncture of the potting material and the hollow fiber membranes exist. These stresses likely lead to the formation of fractures.  相似文献
