Unoccupied beaver (Castor canadensis) sites in New York State were for two years experimentally scented with a mixture of beaver castoreum and anal gland secretion. These sites were colonized less often than unscented control sites. The beaver is the first mammal to have been shown experimentally to use intraspecific odor cues when settling in vacant habitat. Territorial pheromones may be useful as repellents for beaver or other rodents.  相似文献

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a quantitative surface analysis technique used to identify the elemental composition, empirical formula, chemical state, and electronic state of an element. The kinetic energy of the electrons escaping from the material surface irradiated by an x‐ray beam produces a spectrum. XPS identifies chemical species and quantifies their content and the interactions between surface species. It is minimally destructive and is sensitive to a depth between 1–10nm. The elemental sensitivity is in the order of 0.1 atomic %. It requires ultra high vacuum ( Pa) in the analysis chamber and measurement time varies from minutes to hours per sample depending on the analyte. XPS dates back 50 years ago. New spectrometers, detectors, and variable size photon beams, reduce analysis time and increase spatial resolution. An XPS bibliometric map of the 10 000 articles indexed by Web of Science[1] identifies five research clusters: (i) nanoparticles, thin films, and surfaces; (ii) catalysis, oxidation, reduction, stability, and oxides; (iii) nanocomposites, graphene, graphite, and electro‐chemistry; (iv) photocatalysis, water, visible light, and ; and (v) adsorption, aqueous solutions, and waste water.  相似文献

Torsion and normal force measurements were made during single step stress relaxation experiments on a polymeric glass (PMMA). Isochronal data were analysed using an approach adapted from that developed by Penn and Kearsley1 (for incompressible elastic materials) to determine the derivatives ?W?I1, and ?W?I2 of the time dependent strain potential function. ?W?I1 and ?W?I2 are determined from existing solution to the torsion of an incompressible cylinder. A special solution to the torsion of a compressible cylinder is presented and it is shown that the values of ?W?I1 and ?W?I2 obtained using this solution to analyse the data do not differ greatly from those obtained using the incompressible solution. It is found from both solutions that ?W?I1 is negative and increases towards zero with increasing time and deformation while ?W?I2 is positive, greater in magnitude than ?W?I1 and decreases towards zero with increasing time and deformation. These results were unexpected and a full understanding of their meaning has yet to be reached.  相似文献

We present a statistical comparison of the amino acid compositionin a secondary structure element, the -helix, of proteins stableat high temperatures with those which are less so. This studyhas shown that the temperature-dependent Zimm-Bragg helix propagationvalue s is not a good predictor for the helix-forming tendencyof an amino acid in thermostable proteins. However, we haveshown that s, the change in s from 20 to 60°C, accuratelypredicts the direction of the probability shift for 15 aminoacids in thermostable protein a-helices, although it does notpredict the magnitude of that change. The residues tyrosine,glycine and glutamine show a significant increase in residencyin a-helices for thermostable proteins over their nonthermostablecounterparts. Significant decreases in -helix residency occurfor the residues valine, glutamic acid, histidine, cysteineand aspartic acid in proteins from thermophilic organisms. Aromaticinteractions, hydrogen bonding and a reduction of charge mayexplain the increase observed for tyrosine and glutamine andthe decrease in glutamic acid and aspartic acid, although packingconsiderations cannot be ruled out The only physical explanationfor the increase in glycine would seem to be its positive svalue  相似文献

The complete steady-state flow properties of molten poly(ethylene terephthalate) for shear stresses ≦4.14 × 106 dynes/cm2 were determined. A single, complete master curve had been constructed in earlier work by Gregory and Watson; the curve interrelates the shear stress, shear rate, temperature, and molecular weight (inherent viscosity) by using a temperature superposition scheme from the literature and a similar molecular weight superposition scheme. Equations in agreement with theory and with other published experimental data were derived from the master curve. Results presented here make possible the direct calculation of the melt viscosity of poly(ethylene terephthalate) at shear stresses ≦4.14 × 106 dynes/cm2. The effects of a unit temperature change and/or a unit change in inherent viscosity (I. V.) on the melt viscosity were determined. For poly(ethylene terephthalate) with a 0.6 I. V., a 0.0025 change in I. V. accounts for about the same change in melt viscosity as a 1°C change in temperature.  相似文献

The effects of stress rate and stress level on fatigue crack propagation in compression-moulded single-edge notched specimens (0.25 mm in thickness) of polystyrene are reported. Values of the stress rate are obtained from the formula = 2v(maxmax),, wherev is the frequency and max, min are the maximum and minimum stresses of the fatigue cycle. Different levels of are achieved by changing the frequency while keeping max, min at fixed values. The effect of the stress level is investigated by keeping and min constant and varying max andv. The results show that when the kinetic data are plotted as l/t against the energy release rateG 1, a relatively small effect of the stress rate is observed. If the same data are treated as l/N againstG 1, a decrease in l/N with test frequency is seen. The increase in the level of max results in a higher crack speed. The critical crack length is found to be practically the same for all stress-rate experiments. A decrease in the critical crack length is observed with the increase in stress level. Analysis of craze distribution around the crack path shows that the extent of crazing decreases with the increase in stress rate and increases with the increase in stress level. For all experimental conditions, the ratio of the second moment to the square root of the fourth moment of the histograms of craze density along directions normal to the crack path is found to be constant throughout the slow phase of crack propagation. This result supports a self-similarity hypothesis of damage evolution proposed in the crack layer model.  相似文献

Construction activities within the wetted‐perimeter of rivers, referred to as in‐stream construction, are prevalent economically and environmentally motivated activities having direct interactions with sensitive lotic environments. Currently, there is a paucity of research related to in‐stream construction activities and their effects on aquatic ecosystems. In‐stream construction‐induced suspended sediment may result in harmful effects to aquatic flora and fauna. Regulatory frameworks worldwide focus primarily on concentration, with limited consideration for duration and no consideration for spatial extents of suspended sediment exposures. This research develops theoretical concentration, duration, and spatial extent exposure risk relationships for riverine ecosystems to demonstrate the influence of each mechanism during typical in‐stream construction activities. To reduce exposure risk, concentration and duration may be considered pragmatically, based on anticipated activity characteristics and site conditions. Spatial exposure characteristics are important to consider, as illustrated by our finding that activities located near the channel centerline may result in greater exposure risk than similar activities conducted near the streambank. Current regulatory frameworks worldwide do not sufficiently consider all exposure risk mechanisms present during in‐stream construction‐induced suspended sediment releases, possibly inhibiting efforts to reduce adverse environmental effects. This research improves our understanding of suspended sediment in lotic environments and may help environmental managers better evaluate and manage in‐stream construction activities.  相似文献

The oxidation products formed at 500 and 700°C on an amorphous Ta-44.5 at% Ir alloy in an Ar-0.1% O2 gas mixture were characterized using SEM, XRD, EPMA, TEM, STEM, AES, and XPS. Initially, a thin (3–4 nm) layer of Ta2O5 formed at the surface of the alloy. Continued growth of the Ta2O5, which occurred very rapidly, involved diffusion of oxygen anions from the Ta2O5/gas interface to the alloy/Ta2O5 interface, where tantalum was selectively oxidized. Because the oxide grew more quickly than iridium could diffuse back into the alloy, the iridium coalesced into platelets of crystalline iridium-rich alloy that were oriented approximately parallel to the oxide/alloy interface, and which became embedded in a matrix of Ta2O5. The unoxidized core remained in the glassy state. The oxidation process and/or the dissolution of oxygen into the unoxidized alloy caused the alloy to become embrittled.  相似文献

Physical and temporal boundaries are rapidly diminishing in an age of swiftly advancing information communication technologies. Today’s technologically sophisticated business and organizational environments offer a number of distance collaboration modalities (DSMs) that can facilitate efficient and cost-effective meetings that have traditionally required face-to-face meeting venues. Selection of the DCMs that maximize meeting effectiveness is significantly challenging given the wide diversity of available options. Theory and empirical data can be useful as a guide in the selection of the most appropriate DCMs to maximize organizational productivity and success. This article reviews the literature on the behavioral and technical affordances and limitations of the various DCMs. It also provides a theoretical model based on media synchronicity theory to help guide selection of effective DCMs. This theoretical framework emphasizes the primacy of media alignment with core communication processes as well as social and interpersonal factors that influence meeting effectiveness.  相似文献
