Oxide layers grown on the surface provide an effective way of protecting metallic materials against corrosion for sustainable use in a broad range of applications. However, the growth of cavities at the metal/oxide interface weakens the adherence of the protective layer and can promote its spallation under service conditions, as observed for alumina layers formed by selective oxidation of aluminide intermetallic alloys used in high-temperature applications. Here we show that direct atomic-scale observations of the interface between an ultrathin protective oxide layer (alumina) grown on an intermetallic titanium aluminide substrate (TiAl) can be performed with techniques sensitive to the topmost atomic layers at the surface. Nanocavities resulting from the self-assembling of atomic vacancies injected at the interface by the growth mechanism of the protective oxide are observed for the first time, bringing new insight into the understanding of the fate of injected cavities in oxidation processes. 相似文献

The use of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICPMS) as means for the quantitative determination of ZD0473, a platinum anticancer drug, and its related biologically active "aqua" compounds in biofluid samples is described. The performance of the resulting HPLC-ICPMS method was compared with that of a conventional HPLC-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer-based (HPLC-MS/MS) system for properties such as limit of detection, linearity, and reproducibility using spiked samples. The methods were then applied to the determination of plasma ultrafitrate concentrations of ZD0473 in dog plasma samples obtained following intravenous and oral administration at 0.5 and 6 mg/kg, respectively. These experiments showed that both methods were capable of providing accurate and precise results but that the HPLC-ICPMS method had advantages of extended linear range and superior sensitivity, providing a limit of quantification of 0.1 ng/mL for ZD0473, as compared to 5 ng/mL using the current HPLC-MS/MS method. In addition, by using a single combined HPLC-ICPMS/MS/MS system, it was possible to determine the relative MS/MS response of the aqua compounds for the first time. 相似文献

We introduce a generalized diffusion equation that models the propagation of photons in highly scattering domains with thin nonscattering clear layers. Classical diffusion models break down in the presence of clear layers. The model that we propose accurately accounts for the clear-layer effects and has a computational cost comparable to that of classical diffusion. It is based on modeling the propagation in the clear layer as a local tangential diffusion process. It can be justified mathematically in the limit of small mean free paths and is shown numerically to be very accurate in two- and three-dimensional idealized cases. Dust wipe samples were subjected to ultrasonic extraction (UE) in diluted nitric acid, and then analyzed for lead content using field-portable anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). Recoveries of lead were determined from wipe materials which were spiked with certified reference materials (CRMs) containing known quantities of lead. Four different wipe materials and four different CRMs were tested, with and without filtration of aliquots of sample extract through 0.45 microm hydrophilic polytetrafluoroethylene filters. The CRMs consisted of paint, soil, particulate, and dust matrices. Wipe materials were chosen from those which have been found to meet the performance aspects of an ASTM standard specification. UE/ASV experiments were carried out in accordance with newly published ASTM procedures for on-site extraction and electroanalysis. Recoveries were found to vary for different wipe materials and CRMs. For several CRMs, quantitative (80--120%) recoveries for UE/ASV were observed for one wipe material whether filtration was used or not, while other wipe materials required filtration for quantitative recovery. In the case of one wipe material which contained detergents, quantitative recoveries could not be achieved whether filtration was used or not. The total analysis time for a sample set of 6--12 samples was 60--90 min, including extraction time and sample manipulation. The results of this work have provided information on the choice of wipe materials that can be used for quantitative lead measurements by UE/ASV in materials that are representative of sources of lead in surface dust. 相似文献

This study extended the work of S. Siddiqui, R. F. West, and K. E. Stanovich (1998), who studied the link between general print exposure and syllogistic reasoning. It was hypothesized that exposure to certain text structures that contain well-delineated logical forms, such as popularized scientific texts, would be a better predictor of deductive reasoning skill than general print exposure, which is not sensitive to the quality of an individual's reading activity. Furthermore, it was predicted that the ability to generate explanatory bridging inferences while reading would also be predictive of syllogistic reasoning. Undergraduate students (N = 112) were tested for vocabulary, nonverbal cognitive ability, exposure to general print, exposure to popularized scientific literature, and the ability to comprehend texts distinguished by the number of inferences that must be generated to support comprehension. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that a combined measure of exposure to general and scientific literature was a significant predictor of syllogistic reasoning ability. Additionally, the ability to comprehend high-inference-load texts was related to solving syllogisms that were inconsistent with world knowledge, indicating an overlap in deductive reasoning skill and text comprehension processes. Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas and other nonmalignant tumors of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Although the average age of onset of NF2 is 20 years, some individuals may become symptomatic in childhood. We studied 5 unrelated NF2 patients who became symptomatic before age 13. All 5 had multiple tumors in addition to vestibular schwannoma, and none had a positive family history. Sequence analysis of the NF2 gene revealed identical nonsense mutation of exon 6 in 3 patients. Because this mutation destroys a restriction enzyme recognition site, genomic DNA from the 2 other children was directly tested for this change and identical alterations were detected. Although the work of our laboratory and others has not, in general, detected identical mutations in unrelated patients, this mutation seems to occur particularly frequently in the pediatric population and thus may be associated with an especially severe phenotype. Restriction analysis in children with NF2 may be a cost effective way of identifying their mutation. Further work is needed to characterize the effects of this change on the NF2 protein product and its relationship to this severe phenotype. 相似文献

Cold-loving or psychrophilic organisms are widely distributed in nature as a large part of the earth's surface is at temperatures around 0 degrees C. To maintain metabolic rates and to prosper in cold environments, these extremophilic organisms have developed a vast array of adaptations. One main adaptive strategy developed in order to cope with the reduction of chemical reaction rates induced by low temperatures is the synthesis of cold-adapted or psychrophilic enzymes. These enzymes are characterized by a high catalytic activity at low temperatures associated with a low thermal stability. A study of protein adaptation strategies suggests that the high activity of psychrophilic enzymes could be achieved by the destabilization of the active site, allowing the catalytic center to be more flexible at low temperatures, whereas other protein regions may be destabilized or as rigid as their mesophilic counterparts. Due to these particular properties, psychrophilic enzymes offer a high potential not only for fundamental research but also for biotechnological applications. 相似文献

The effect of storage conditions (light, temperature, container types) and time on the quality of natural olive oils from different cultivars and Australian regions were studied. The oils’ changing quality was monitored through several physico-chemical methods (free fatty acids, peroxide value, UV-spectrometry (K232, K 270 and ΔK), induction time, total polyphenol content, bitterness, pyropheophytin a and 1,2-diacyl-glycerol content) and sensory analysis over 24 months. Pyropheophytins a and 1,2-diacyl-glycerols criteria showed very good performance as indicators of overall olive oil quality and freshness as well as highlighting any problems during the storage of the product. Pyropheophytin a increment averaged 7 % per year and the 1,2-diacyl-glycerols decreased at an average of 23 % per year at normal storage conditions over time. 相似文献

Industrial, Scientific and Medical frequency band is used for the IEEE.802.15.1 standard. IEEE.802.15.1 can be affected by
noise and interference due to other neighboring wireless devices sharing the same frequency carrier. The noise and interference
create difficulties in ascertaining an accurate real-time transmission rate at the receiving end. Furthermore, the MPEG-4
codec is an object-oriented compression system and demands a high bandwidth. It is therefore difficult to avoid excessive
delay, image quality degradation and/or data loss during MPEG-4 video transmission over standard systems. A new buffer entitled
‘buffer added’ has been introduced at the input of the Bluetooth 1.2 device. This buffer is controlled by a Rule-Based Fuzzy
(RBF) logic controller at the input and a neural-fuzzy controller (NFC) at the output. The two new fuzzy rules manipulate
and supervise the flow of video over the Bluetooth 1.2 standard. The computer simulation results illustrate the comparison
between a non-CI video transmission over Bluetooth 1.2 and the proposed design, confirming that the applications of RBF and
