Sexual functioning among breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, and healthy women.

Determined the specific type of sexual functioning deficits and the relationship between global sexual satisfaction and adjustment in 2 related life areas (marital relationship and body image) for 2 groups of cancer patients at high risk for sexual difficulties. The 2 groups included 16 27–67 yr old females with Stage 2 breast cancer and 16 31–65 yr old females with gynecologic cancer. These Ss were compared to 16 healthy female outpatients (controls). Measures included the Sexual Activities scale from the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory, a modified version of the Dyadic Assessment Scale (marital adjustment), a global sexual evaluation, and a body-image scale. Analyses revealed that the aspects of sexual functioning for breast-cancer and gynecologic-cancer Ss that differed from those of controls were the frequency of sexual behaviors and the level of sexual arousal. Whereas Ss' evaluations of their current sexual life had no relationship to their marital-adjustment ratings, analyses suggested that body-image disruption may be a prevalent problem for gynecologic cancer patients. Data suggest that cancer diagnosis and treatment are instrumental in producing reductions in sexual activity and arousability. Critical Speed Control of a Solar Car

The World Solar Challenge is a 3000 km race for solar powered cars across the Australian continent from Darwin to Adelaide. Each car is powered by a panel of photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electrical power. The power can be used directly to drive the car or stored in a battery for later use. Previous papers (P. Howlett, P. Pudney, T. Tarnopolskaya, and D. Gates, IMA Journal of Mathematics Applied in Business and Industry vol. 8, pp. 59–81, 1997; P.G. Howlett and P.J. Pudney, Dynamics of Continuous, Discrete and Impulsive Systems vol. 4, pp. 553–567, 1998) using a simplified model of the battery, have shown that the optimal strategy is essentially a speedholding strategy. In this paper, with a more realistic model of the battery, we show that the optimal driving strategy is a critical speed strategy. For an optimal journey with no beginning and no ending the solar car must always travel at the critical speed. For an optimal journey of finite length the speed must be close to the critical speed for most of the journey. The critical speed depends on the solar power and will normally vary slowly with time.

Semiparametric Estimation in Time‐Series Regression with Long‐Range Dependence

Abstract. We consider semiparametric estimation in time‐series regression in the presence of long‐range dependence in both the errors and the stochastic regressors. A central limit theorem is established for a class of semiparametric frequency domain‐weighted least squares estimates, which includes both narrow‐band ordinary least squares and narrow‐band generalized least squares as special cases. The estimates are semiparametric in the sense that focus is on the neighbourhood of the origin, and only periodogram ordinates in a degenerating band around the origin are used. This setting differs from earlier studies on time‐series regression with long‐range dependence, where a fully parametric approach has been employed. The generalized least squares estimate is infeasible when the degree of long‐range dependence is unknown and must be estimated in an initial step. In that case, we show that a feasible estimate which has the same asymptotic properties as the infeasible estimate, exists. By Monte Carlo simulation, we evaluate the finite‐sample performance of the generalized least squares estimate and the feasible estimate.     

Analytic models for multistage interconnection networks

Central to all parallel architectures is a switching network which facilitates the communication between a machine's components necessary to support their cooperation. Multistage interconnection networks (MINs) are classified and analytic models are described for both packet-switched and circuit-switched MINs with asynchronous transmission mode. Under strong enough assumptions, packet switching can be modeled by standard queuing methods, hence providing a standard against which to assess approximate models. We describe one such approximate model with much weaker assumptions which is more widely applicable and can be implemented more efficiently. To model circuit switching requires a different approach because of the presence of passive resources, namely multiple links through the MIN which must be held before a message can be transmitted and throughout its transmission. An approximate analysis based upon the recursive structure of a particular MIN topology which yields accurate predictions when compared with simulation is described.     

Phase Studies Concerning Sintering in Aluminas Doped with Ti4+

Previous solid state analyses of sintering in Ti⁴⁺-doped-commercial alumina are shown to be in error because a liquid phase exists in the appropriate region of the Al₂O₃−TiO₃−Na₂Ophase diagram at least by 1350^°C, a temperature lower than that at which "solid state" studies were conducted. It is suggested that liquid-phase sintering is a much more common occurrence than was realized formerly.     

Sludge reed bed facilities: operation and problems.

Short operating periods and problems with dewatering efficiency, vegetation, mineralisation and odour are primarily caused by incorrect construction of the filter, poor capillary connections, an inadequate number of basins, insufficient basin area and overloading during commissioning and during subsequent operation. Dimensioning should be based on the sludge quality including the dewatering qualities and not solely on calculations of the sludge production. Loading after planting depends on the development level of the vegetation. The loading program should ensure that reed establishment is not impeded and should prevent the sludge residue from growing so quickly horizontally and vertically that the reeds cannot colonise the sludge residue. Overloading results in an anaerobic sludge residue with ensuing methane production. Typically, a sludge reed bed facility with a loading period of maximum 5 days, must be built with 10 basins to permit a rest phase of about 40 days. Facilities with 8 basins, where it is possible to load 1 basin for 7 days, will be able to have a 7-week rest phase before the first basin is loaded again. Facilities with for example 8-13 basins and loading period of between 4 and 10 days are able to achieve rest periods of up to 2 to 2(1/2) months, which results in the optimal evapotranspiration and minerilization. The conditions and thus the possibilities vary depending upon the type of sludge.
