Polysulfone membranes were prepared via phase inversion technique by using polyethylene glycol with molecular weights of 400, 1500 and 6000 Da as pore forming agent in dope formulation. The performance of membrane was characterized using humic acid and water sample taken from Sembrong River, Johor, Malaysia was used as natural organic matter sources. Membrane properties were also characterized in terms of mean pore radius, pure water flux, humic acid rejection and fouling resistance. The results indicated that the pure water flux and mean pore radius of membranes increased with the increase of PEG content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed the presence of hydrophilic component in PSf/PEG blend with the significant appearance of O–H peak at 3418.78 cm− 1. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the presence of finger-like structure for all membranes and the structure intensified as PEG content was increased. The results obtained from the fouling study indicated that the membrane with the lowest PEG content and molecular weight has an excellent performance in mitigating fouling.  相似文献

Crude palm oil (CPO) transesterification with methanol at room temperature is an important factor for optimizing biodiesel processing costs with respect to energy input; in addition, good stability of expensive lipase activity was ensured and is reported in this study. The enzyme loading, agitation speed and reaction time at a constant operating temperature of 30 °C were studied to find favourable operational conditions using a factorial design. Statistical analysis was used to assist the enzymatic transesterification so that a reduced mass transfer effect was achieved to obtain high FAME yields. The combination of optimum enzyme loading of 6.67 wt% and 150 rpm agitation speed for the system at 30 °C gave 81.73% FAME yield at 4 h and a production rate of 85.86% FAME yield/h. The high viscosity of CPO observed at 30 °C compared to 40 °C hindered the achievement of 96.15% FAME yield at room temperature. It was found that an increase of 10 °C invariably deactivated the lipase, but was compensated by the enhanced FAME production rate with 96.15% FAME yield after only 4 h reaction time. Thus, 40 °C was considered the most suitable operating temperature for lipozyme TL IM to catalyze CPO transesterification.  相似文献

Performance of biodiesel in engines is well established and biodiesel is currently adjudged as a low carbon fuel with the most potential of replacing fossil fuels. The fossil fuel sources are dwindling in Pakistan resulting in importation of about 8.1 million tonnes at approximately US$ 9.4 billion per annum. In the ambit of this justification, augmenting the energy scarce resources in Pakistan through intense harnessing of the varied biodiesel sources can adequately address the deficiency and can ensure energy security. Towards this end, the progress attained in biodiesel related researches in Pakistan are evaluated and presented with the view of highlighting ways of achieving the target set by the Government. A feedstock that drew less attention is spent triglycerides, and the little work reported by some organizations appeared promising. Now the onus is upon organizations such as the Alternative Energy Development Board and Pakistan State Oil to harness the research results from several indigenous Universities and develop a full-scale biodiesel economy in Pakistan.  相似文献

Olives were collected from various districts of Turkey (North and South Aegean sub-region, Bursa-Akhisar, South East Anatolia region) harvested over seven (2001–2007) seasons. The aim of this study was to characterize the chemical profiles of the oils derived from single variety Turkish olives including Ayvalik, Memecik, Gemlik, Erkence, Nizip Yaglik and Uslu. The olive oils were extracted by super press and three phase centrifugation from early harvest olives. Chosen quality indices included free fatty acid content (FFA), peroxide value (PV) and spectrophotometric characteristics in the ultraviolet (UV) region. According to the FFA results, 46% (11 out of 24 samples) were classified as extra virgin olive oils; whereas using the results of PV and UV, over 83% (over 19 of the 24 samples) had the extra virgin olive oil classification. Other measured parameters included oil stability (oxidative stability, chlorophyll pigment, pheophytin-α), cistrans fatty acid composition and color index. Oxidative stability among oils differed whereas the cis–trans fatty acid values were within the national and international averages. Through the application of two multivariate statistical methods, Principal component and hierarchical analyses, early harvest virgin olive oil samples were classified according to the geographical locations categorized in terms of fatty acid profiles. Such statistical clustering gave rise to defined groups. These data provide evidence of the variation in virgin olive oil quality, especially early harvest and cistrans isomers of fatty acid profiles from the diverse agronomic conditions in the olive growing regions of Turkey.  相似文献

Long‐term stability is one of the most important quality criteria of beer. Three groups of measuring methods are available for its determination: real time tests, predictive tests and indicative tests. One of the most common methods is the predictive forcing test, which is a time‐consuming method for accelerating beer ageing, e.g., at 0°C and 60°C. Two ways exist to perform this test: (1) follow‐up of haze development and determination of the lag phase or (2) the measurement of haze values after several days. The first option was evaluated by performing a long‐term Forcing test over a period of 4 months by analyzing a bottom‐fermented beer. It was shown that the haze curve followed a typical course with a lag phase, an increase phase and a stationary phase. Significant differences between the measurement after the cooling and the warm period were shown. In search of quicker methods and more accurate predictive indicators, the charge titration method was developed as an alternative to determine the particle charge of filtered beers, whereupon the relationship was elucidated between the increase in hazing and decrease of potential along with the advanced aging of beer. The results showed that with increased particle size due to agglomeration, the total charge decreased. In this array of trials, two differently stabilized beers were examined. Although both beers showed different haze values in the beginning (0.32 EBC and 1.30 EBC), the less stabilized beer had only 10 warm days and in contrast the beer with the good stabilization had over 20 warm days. With the help of the total charge, predictions were possible regarding the long‐term stability of the beer.  相似文献

Siliceous materials such as rice husk ash (RHA) have potential to be utilized as high performance sorbents for the flue gas desulfurization process in small-scale industrial boilers. This study presents findings on identifying the key factorfor high desulfurization activity in sorbents prepared from RHA. Initially, a systematic approach using central composite rotatable design was used to develop a mathematical model that correlates the sorbent preparation variables to the desulfurization activity of the sorbent. The sorbent preparation variables studied are hydration period, x1 (6-16 h), amount of RHA, x2 (5-15 g), amount of CaO, x3 (2-6 g), amount of water, x4 (90-110 mL), and hydration temperature, x5 (150-250 degrees C). The mathematical model developed was subjected to statistical tests and the model is adequate for predicting the SO2 desulfurization activity of the sorbent within the range of the sorbent preparation variables studied. Based on the model, the amount of RHA, amount of CaO, and hydration period used in the preparation step significantly influenced the desulfurization activity of the sorbent. The ratio of RHA and CaO used in the preparation mixture was also a significant factor that influenced the desulfurization activity of the sorbent. A RHA to CaO ratio of 2.5 leads to the formation of specific reactive species in the sorbent that are believed to be the key factor responsible for high desulfurization activity in the sorbent. Other physical properties of the sorbent such as pore size distribution and surface morphology were found to have insignificant influence on the desulfurization activity of the sorbent.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer in an evaporating two-component falling liquid film are considered. Based on physical phenomena of the transport processes, models for the laminar and the turbulent-wavy falling film are presented. A comparison with experimental data shows that the laminar model is only applicable for restricted conditions. Predicted heat transfer coefficients of the turbulent-wavy model are compared with data from experiments with water and water–ethylene glycol as test fluid for Reynolds numbers between 250 and 420. The model predicts well the experimental data.  相似文献

Solvent viscosity was found to be a predominant parameter to control free-radical surface graft polymerization. Poly(ethylene-alt-tetrafluoroethylene) foils were lithographically exposed to 92 eV photons in order to create patterns of radicals at their surface, which react with the oxygen of the ambient air to produce peroxides. Glycidyl methacrylate was then radically polymerized from these peroxide initiators. We discovered that increasing the viscosity of the grafting solution by addition of polyethylene glycol boosts the grafting reaction, leading to an order of magnitude increase in the height of the grafted layer. Further increasing the viscosity leads to thinner layers of grafted material. The increase of the grafted layer thickness in the low viscosity range is interpreted to be due to a diminution of the termination rate while for higher viscosity, the reduction of the initiation rate causes the observed decrease of the grafted thickness. This interpretation is in agreement with observed morphological and structural differences of nanostructures grafted at different viscosities. We conclude that viscosity is an essential and very easily controllable parameter for surface graft-reactions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The increasing cost of fossil fuels as well as the escalating social and industrial awareness of the environmental impacts associated with the use of fossil fuels has created the need for more sustainable fuel options. Bioethanol, produced from renewable biomass such as sugar and starch materials, is believed to be one of these options, and it is currently being harnessed extensively. However, the utilization of sugar and starch materials as feedstocks for bioethanol production creates a major competition with the food market in terms of land for cultivation, and this makes bioethanol from these sources economically less attractive. RESULT: This study explores the suitability of microalgae (Chlorococum sp.) as a substrate for bioethanol production via yeast (Saccharomyces bayanus) under different fermentation conditions. Results show a maximum ethanol concentration of 3.83 g L?1 obtained from 10 g L?1 of lipid‐extracted microalgae debris. CONCLUSION: This productivity level (~38% w/w), which is in keeping with that of current production systems endorses microalgae as a promising substrate for bioethanol production.
