In 3 experiments, participants, on signal, moved a cursor from a central position to 1 of 8 numerically labeled locations on the circumference of a clock face. Movements were controlled by a mouse in 1 of 4 conditions: vertical reversal, horizontal reversal, combined reversals, or normal (i.e., no reversals). Participants were trained in 1, 2, or 3 of these conditions and were tested 1 week later with either the same or a different condition. There were improvements across training and perfect retention across the delay. There was little or no transfer, however, even when training involved combined reversals or multiple conditions. During development of the amniote embryo, the dorsolateral territory of the somite is destined to give rise to the hypaxial skeletal musculature. To study the mechanisms that lead to the formation of this musculature, we cloned the chick Lbx1 gene that is specific to prospective hypaxial myoblasts at occipital, cervical and limb levels. Using this gene as a marker, we characterised the anatomical structures that produce the signals necessary for the specification of the hypaxial musculature by ablating them or transplanting them to ectopic locations in the chick embryo. In addition, we inserted BMP4 soaked beads medial to the somite. Our data suggest that lateralising signals from intermediate and lateral mesoderm have to synergise with dorsalising signals from the surface ectoderm to induce the formation of the hypaxial musculature. However, the lateralising function of the lateral mesoderm can only in part be mimicked by BMP4.  相似文献

In a unilateral ureteral obstruction model, a progressive accumulation of hyaluronan (HA) was observed in the renal papilla during the first 11 days of obstruction, after which the amount of HA decreased until the last day of observation, i.e. day 22. The initial accumulation of HA in the obstructed kidney probably reflects the attempts of the kidney to maintain osmotic balance. Consequently, when filtration ceases, HA synthesis decreases and the concentration of HA falls. In the papilla of the contralateral kidney, that had not been exposed to any mechanical damage, the HA content was found to vary in a similar way to that in the obstructed kidney. The explanation for this could be that the mesenchymal cells within the papilla increase their production of HA in order to meet the requirements of increased function necessary to also shoulder the function of the damaged kidney. In short similar variations in the HA content of the renal papilla was observed in both healthy and obstructed kidneys in a unilateral ureteral obstruction model.  相似文献

A technique for bandwidth compression coding of sequential digitized video imagery is presented. The method uses adaptive one-bit quantization over small blocks of space and time. The system includes global registration and motion detection for optimal hit assignments. A comparsion is made with a conditional replenishment technique using a motion compensated predictor described in the literature. The method presented produces reconstructed video sequences filmed from low altitude aircraft with slight degradation which is acceptable for many remote sensing applications at 0.9 bit/pixel data rate. Robust behavior in the presence of channel noise is demonstrated.  相似文献

Chemical modification of nanopore surfaces is of great interest as it means that the surface composition is no longer fixed by the choice of substrate material, even to the point where large biomolecules can be attached to the pore walls. Controlling nanopore transport characteristics is one important application of surface modification which is very relevant given the significant interest in sensors based on the transport of ions and molecules through nanopores. Reported here is a method to change the surface charge polarity of single track-etched conical nanopores in polyimide, which also has the potential to attach more complex molecules to the carboxyl groups on the nanopore walls. These carboxyl groups were converted into terminal amino groups, first by activation with N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N-ethylcarbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) followed by the covalent coupling of ethylenediamine. This results in a changed surface charge polarity. Regeneration of a carboxyl-terminated surface was also possible, by reaction of the amino groups with succinic anhydride. The success of these reactions was confirmed by measurements of the pore's pH sensitive current-voltage (I-V) characteristics before and after the chemical modification, which depend on surface charge. The?permselectivity of the pores also changed accordingly with the modification.  相似文献

The effect of proximity to a dominant cow on a low-ranking cow's willingness to feed was assessed using choice tests. The main aim of the experiment was to determine the feeding space allowance at which the majority of subordinate cows would choose to feed on high-palatability food (HPF) next to a dominant cow rather than feeding alone on low-palatability food (LPF). Thirty Holstein-Friesian cows were used in the study. Half of the cows were trained to make an association between a black bin and HPF and a white bin and LPF, and the other half were trained with the opposite combination. Observations of pair-wise aggressive interactions were observed during feeding to determine the relative social status of each cow. From this, dominant and subordinate cows were allocated to experimental pairs. When cows had achieved an HPF preference with an 80% success rate in training, they were presented with choices using a Y-maze test apparatus, in which cows were offered choices between feeding on HPF with a dominant cow and feeding on LPF alone. Four different space allowances were tested at the HPF feeder: 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, and 0.75 m. At the 2 smaller space allowances, cows preferred to feed alone (choices between feeding alone or not for 0.3- and 0.45-m tests were significantly different). For the 2 larger space allowances, cows had no significant preferences (number of choices for feeding alone or with a dominant). Given that low-status cows are willing to sacrifice food quality to avoid close contact with a dominant animal, we suggest that the feeding space allowance should be at least 0.6m per cow whenever possible. However, even when space allowances are large, it is clear that some subordinate cows will still prefer to avoid proximity to dominant individuals.  相似文献
