The volatilization of radionuclides during the stabilization/solidification of radioactive wastes at high temperatures is one of the major problems to be considered in choosing suitable wasteforms, process, material systems, etc. This paper reports a novel method to convert volatile wastes into nonvolatile compounds via a sol-gel process, which is different from the conventional method using metal-alkoxides and organic solvents. The material system was designed with sodium silicate (Si) as a gelling agent, phosphoric acid (P) as a catalyst/stabilizer, aluminum nitrate (Al) as a property promoter, and H20 as a solvent. A novel structural model for the chemical conversion of molten salt waste, named RPRM (Reaction Product in Reaction Module), was established, and the waste could be solidified with glass matrix via a simple procedure. The leached fraction of Cs and Sr by a PCT leaching method was 0.72% and 0.014%, respectively. In conclusion, the RPRM model isto converttargetwastes into stable and manageable products, not to obtain a specific crystalline product for each radionuclide. This paper suggested a new stabilization/solidification method for salt wastes by establishing the gel-forming material system and showing a practical example, not a new synthesis method of stable crystalline phase. This process, named "gel-route stabilization/solidification (GRSS)", will be a prospective alternative with stable chemical process on the immobilization of salt wastes and various mixed radioactive waste for final disposal.  相似文献

Technetium is a significant radioactive contaminant from nuclear fuel cycle operations. It is highly mobile in its oxic form (as Tc(VII)O4-) but is scavenged to sediments in its reduced forms (predominantly Tc(IV)). Here we examine the behavior of Tc at low concentrations and as microbial anoxia develops in sediment microcosms. A cascade of stable-element terminal-electron-accepting processes developed in microcosms due to indigenous microbial activity. TcO4- removal from solution occurred during active microbial Fe(III) reduction, which generated Fe(II) in the sediments and was complete before sulfate reduction began. Microbial community analysis revealed a similar and complex microbial population at all three sample sites. At the intermediate salinity site, PauII, a broad range of NO3-, Mn(IV), Fe(III), and SO4(2-) reducers were present in sediments including microbes with the potential to reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), although no differences in the microbial population were discerned as anoxia developed. When sterilized sediments were incubated with pure cultures of NO3(-)-, Fe(III)-, and sulfate-reducing bacteria, TcO4- removal occurred during active Fe(III) reduction. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed that TcO4- removal was due to reduction to hydrous Tc(IV)O2 in Fe(III)- and sulfate-reducing estuarine sediments.  相似文献

This paper identifies the spatial extent of bauxite processing residue (red mud)-derived contaminants and modes of transport within the Marcal and Ra?ba river systems after the dike failure at Ajka, western Hungary. The geochemical signature of the red mud is apparent throughout the 3076 km2 Marcal system principally with elevated Al, V, As, and Mo. Elevated concentrations of Cr, Ga, and Ni are also observed within 2 km of the source areas in aqueous and particulate phases where hyperalkalinity (pH < 13.1) is apparent. Although the concentrations of some trace elements exceed aquatic life standards in waters (e.g., V, As) and fluvial sediments (As, Cr, Ni, V), the spatial extent of these is limited to the Torna Creek and part of the upper Marcal. Source samples show a bimodal particle size distribution (peaks at 0.7 and 1.3 μm) which lends the material to ready fluvial transport. Where elevated concentrations are found in fluvial sediments, sequential extraction suggests the bulk of the As, Cr, Ni, and V are associated with residual (aqua-regia/HF digest) phases and unlikely to be mobile in the environment. However, at some depositional hotspots, association of As, Cr, and V with weak acid-extractable phases is observed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A wide range of 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP) concentrations as well as various treatment durations have been studied in tomatoes by different researchers. However, little is known about interaction of 1‐MCP doses and maturity stages of tomatoes. Therefore the effects of different concentrations of 1‐MCP on storage and postharvest quality of ‘Zorro’ tomatoes harvested at mature green or pink maturity stages were investigated in a 2‐year trial study. RESULTS: Higher concentrations of 1‐MCP delayed and/or inhibited all parameters related to fruit ripening, such as lycopene, chlorophyll, surface color, polygalacturonase (PG) activity and soluble solids content/titratable acidity (SSC/TA), and these effects were greater in tomatoes harvested at the mature green stages. Lower concentrations of 1‐MCP slightly reduced the loss in general quality features compared with untreated tomatoes. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that 1‐MCP, especially at higher doses, is effective for delaying ripening of mature green tomatoes. Mature green fruits treated with 1000 nL L?1 1‐MCP were stored for 35 days without significant decreases in quality characteristics such as elasticity, surface color and SSC/TA with certain physiological processes (ethylene production, PG activity, lycopene synthesis). In order to produce only a pH-controlled solution without discharging any unused solution, this work has developed a continuous electrolytic system with an ion exchange membrane-equipped electrolyzer and a tank, called as a pH-adjustment reservoir, placed just in front of the electrolyzer, where as a target solution was fed into the pH-adjustment reservoir, a portion of the solution in the pH-adjustment reservoir was circulated through the cathodic or anodic chamber of the electrolyzer depending on the type of the ion exchange membrane used, and another portion of the solution in the pH-adjustment reservoir was discharged from the electrolytic system through the opposite electrode chamber with its pH being controlled. The internal circulation of the pH-adjustment reservoir solution through the anodic chamber in the case of using a cation exchange membrane and that through the cathodic chamber in the case of using an anion exchange membrane could make the solution, discharged from the other counter chamber, effectively acidic and basic, respectively. The phenomena of the pH being controlled in the system could be explained by the electro-migration of the ion species in the solution through the ion exchange membrane under a cell potential difference between the anode and the cathode and its consequently-occurring non-charge equilibriums and the electrolytic water-split reactions in the anodic and cathodic chambers.  相似文献
