Epoxy resins containing both phosphorous and silicon were prepared via the fusion process of reacting a phosphorous diol and a silicon diol with a bisphenol‐A‐type epoxy. With various feeding ratios of the reactants, epoxy resins with different phosphorous and silicon contents were obtained. Through curing the epoxies with diaminodiphenylmethane, the cured epoxy resins exhibit tailored glass transition temperatures (159–77°C), good thermal stability (>320°C), and high char yields at 700°C under air atmosphere. The high char yield was demonstrated to come from the synergistic effect of phosphorous and silicon, where phosphorous enriches char formation and silicon protects the char from thermal degradation. Moreover, high flame retardancy of the epoxy resins was found by the high LOI value of 42.5. The relationship of the char yields at 700°C under air atmosphere (ρ) and the LOI values of the epoxy resins could be expressed as LOI = 0.62ρ + 19.2. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A thermal stable epoxy nanocomposite prepared from the 4,4′‐diglycidylether bisphenol A (DGEBA) and the P/Si ladder‐like polysilsesquioxane (PSSQ). The activation energies of thermal degradation were calculated by Kissinger's and Ozawa's methods. The higher ladder‐like PSSQ content not only increase the oligomer content but also generate the steric hindrance. Which steric hindrance influence the epoxy/amine curing reaction of the modified epoxy system was more than the pristine DGEBA epoxy system. Abstract Corrosion behaviours of carbon steel coated with polyester and polyvinylester in a simulated flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) fluid (i.e., a mixture of H2SO4 and 0.1 wt% Fe2(SO4)3 at pH=2) have been investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The protective nature of the coatings at 25°C has been observed in the following order: polyvinylester primer >> polyvinylester topcoat > polyester topcoat > polyester primer. Coating deterioration occurred and the coating deterioration rate accelerated with increasing temperatures upto 85°C. However, the corrosion resistance sequence has remained the same. A series of V2O5-TiO2 aerogel catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method with subsequent supercritical drying with CO2. The main variables in the sol-gel method were the amounts of V2O5 and when the vanadium precursor was introduced. V2O5-TiO2 xerogel and V2O5/TiO2 (P-25) were also prepared for comparison. The V2O5-TiO2 aerogel catalysts showed much higher surface areas and total pore volumes than V2O5-TiO2 xerogel and impregnated V2O5/TiO2 (P-25) catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD). The selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia in the presence of excess O2 was studied over these catalysts. Among various V2O5-TiO2 catalysts, V2O5 supported on aerogel TiO2 showed a wide temperature window exhibiting high NOx conversions. This superior catalytic activity is closely related to
the large amounts of strong acidic sites as well as the surface vanadium species with characteristics such as easy reducibility
and monomeric and polymeric vanadia surface species.
