In the setting of symbolic dynamics on discrete finitely generated infinite groups, we define a model of finite automata with multiple independent heads that walk on Cayley graphs, called group-walking automata, and use it to define subshifts. We characterize the torsion groups (also known as periodic groups) as those on which the group-walking automata are strictly weaker than Turing machines, and those on which the head hierarchy is infinite.  相似文献

A typical wastewater treatment system in a pulp and paper mill in Finland treats wastewater both mechanically and biologically. Sludges resulting from these processes have to be disposed of. One possible way of doing this is to incinerate them with solid fuel in the power plant of the mill. To minimize the amount of sludge and to make the use of the sludge energy efficient, it has to be dried before incineration. Mechanical drying of the sludge from biological wastewater treatment is difficult to carry out. Using secondary energies may provide a competitive way of arranging drying: a method of doing this by using partial vacuum evaporation to utilize the low temperature secondary heat in sludge drying is under development. A laboratory study to examine the behavior of activated sludge under partial vacuum evaporation conditions was carried out using a laboratory rotating evaporator to analyze the drying of activated sludge from three mills at 40-80°C boiling temperatures. This article presents the results from the tests. These are promising; it was possible to reach high dry solids content. Also, no boiling point temperature rise was detected, fouling of the evaporator seemed low and easily avoidable, condensate from the evaporator weas relatively clean and returnable to the processes of the mill.  相似文献

The Dekati mass monitor (DMM; Dekati Ltd., Finland), a relatively new real-time mass measurement instrument, was investigated in this project. In contrast to the existing gravimetric filter method also used as a standard for regulation purposes, this instrument provides second-by-second data on mass concentration in the engine exhaust gas. The principle of the DMM is based on particle charging, inertial and electrical size classification, and electrical detection of aerosol particles. This study focuses on the instrument's practical performance. Details on calibration and the theory of operation will be published elsewhere. The exhaust emissions of two heavy-duty engines complying with the Euro III emission standard were measured on a dynamic engine test bench. We looked atthe particle number and mass emissions of the engines in different transient test cycles and steady-state conditions. The ability to follow transient test cycles and the response times of the DMM were investigated. The aerosol mass concentration measured by the DMM was compared with the mass concentration obtained by the standard gravimetric filter method with Teflon-coated glass fiber filters. The total mass concentration (integral over the whole cycle) measured by the DMM is about 20% higher than that measured by the standard gravimetric filter method. The total mass concentration from the DMM was also compared with the volume concentration calculated from the electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) measurements. Correlations were made with other particle measuring systems. The DMM correlates very well with the particulate mass (R2 = 0.95) and exhibits good linearity and repeatability. The response time to a well-defined change in exhaust concentration was observed to be fast and stable. The DMM was able to follow transient test cycles and provides good results on a second-by-second basis. The instrument used in this study was still under development, and there is therefore no complete scientific background reference for the DMM. This study therefore focuses more on the measurements than on the scientific background. The measurements have shown thatthe DMM is an adequate instrument for measuring the mass concentration of engine exhaust, with results comparable to those from the standard gravimetric filter method. In addition, the DMM provides real-time second-by-second data of the mass concentration during transient test cycles.  相似文献

Program restructuring in a segmented virtual memory system is examined on the base of empirical data. The measure of connectivity is based on the decrease of the space-time integral caused by combining the two segments. A heuristic clustering algorithm, based on the use of effectively reduced memory reference strings, is presented. It turns out that performance problems in a segmented system are created by the large number of small segments. Restructuring is able to improve the performance of the system essentially; the optimal performance is reached with values of the memory control parameter which are one magnitude smaller than those applicable to original programs. The clusters formed do not correspond to program phases, but to smaller units of program execution; thus the clustering result supports a hierarchical model of program locality. The restructuring process is reasonably insensitive both to the memory control parameters and to the input data used.  相似文献

The paradigm of visual search was used to investigate how participants looked for a target file among distracter files in an icon-based computer interface. The purpose of these experiments was to study the effect of icons and spatial grouping on scanning speed. Does spatial grouping of identical icons increase the scanning speed? Do icons themselves speed up the search for a target file when compared with a condition in which the files are indicated with mere textual labels? Our results showed that both the presence of icons and their grouping had a significant positive effect on the scanning speed. Potential applications of this research include the design of graphics-based interfaces, such as the effective arrangement of icons in an interface.  相似文献

Image reconstruction in optical tomography is a nonlinear and generally ill- posed inverse problem. Noise in the measured surface data can give rise to substantial artifacts in the recovered volume images of optical coefficients. Apart from random shot noise caused by the limited number of photons detected at the measurement site, another class of systematic noise is associated with losses specific to individual source and detector locations. A common cause for such losses in data acquisition systems based on fiber-optic light delivery is the imperfect coupling between the fiber tips and the skin of the patient because of air gaps or surface moisture. Thus the term coupling errors was coined for this type of data noise. However, source and detector specific errors can also occur in noncontact measurement systems not using fiber-optic delivery, for example, owing to local skin pigmentation, hair and hair follicles, or instrumentation calibration errors. Often it is not possible to quantify coupling effects in a way that allows us to remove them from the data or incorporate them into the light transport model. We present an alternative method of eliminating coupling errors by regarding the complex-valued coupling factors for each source and detector as unknowns in the reconstruction process and recovering them simultaneously with the images of absorption and scattering. Our method takes into account the possibility that coupling effects have an influence on both the amplitude and the phase shift of the measurements. Reconstructions from simulated and experimental phantom data are presented, which show that including the coupling coefficients in the reconstruction greatly improves the recovery of absorption and scattering images.  相似文献

Global climate change includes concomitant changes in many components of the abiotic flux necessary for plant life. In this paper, we investigate the combined effects of elevated CO2 (720 ppm) and temperature (+2 K) on the phytochemistry of three deciduous tree species. The analysis revealed that elevated CO(2) generally stimulated increased carbon partitioning to various classes of phenolic compounds, whereas an increase in temperature had the opposite effect. The combined effects of both elevated CO2 and temperature were additive, i.e., canceling one another's individual effects. Obviously, the effects of global climate change on leaf chemistry must simultaneously consider both temperature and CO2. If these results are generally applicable, then the counteracting effect of the temperature is likely to play a major role in alpine, boreal, and arctic zones in determining the balance between populations of plants and herbivores.  相似文献

Background

One of the major challenges associated with our ageing population is the increasing incidence of age-associated cognitive decline, which has significant implications for an individual's ability to lead a productive and fulfilling life. In pure economic terms the costs of ageing reflects decreased productivity and engagement with the workforce. The maintenance of brain health underpinning intact cognition is a key factor to maintaining a positive, engaged, and productive lifestyle. In light of this, the role of diet, including supplementation with nutritional and even pharmacological interventions capable of ameliorating the neurocognitive changes that occur with age constitute vital areas of research.

Methods

In order to reduce cognitive ageing, the ARC longevity intervention (ARCLI) was developed to examine the effects of two promising natural pharmacologically active supplements on cognitive performance. ARCLI is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 3-arm clinical trial in which 465 participants will be randomized to receive an extract of Bacopa monnieri (CDRI08 300 mg/day), Pycnogenol (150 mg/day), or placebo daily for 12 months. Participants will be tested at baseline and then at 3, 6 and 12 months post-randomization on a wide battery of cognitive, neuropsychological and mood measures, cardiovascular (brachial and aortic systolic and diastolic blood pressures as well as arterial stiffness), biochemical (assays to measure inflammation, oxidative stress and safety) as well as genetic assessments (telomere length and several Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms). The primary aim is to investigate the effects of these supplements on cognitive performance. The secondary aims are to explore the time-course of cognitive enhancement as well as potential cardiovascular and biochemical mechanisms underpinning cognitive enhancement over the 12 months of administration. ARCLI will represent one of the largest and most comprehensive experimental clinical trials in which supplements are administered to elderly participants. Results from ARCLI may help develop novel preventative health practices and nutritional/pharmacological targets in the elderly for cognitive and brain health.

Excessive ethanol consumption, obesity and increasing age may all lead to increased serum levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) enzyme, which plays a key role in the metabolism of extracellular reduced glutathione. However, as yet, the interactions between the various modulators of GGT activities have remained poorly defined. We analyzed data from 15,617 apparently healthy individuals (7254 men and 8363 women, mean age 46 ± 13 years, range 25–74 years) who participated in a national cross-sectional health survey in Finland between 1997 and 2007. All subjects underwent detailed clinical examinations and interviews, including the amount of ethanol use and smoking habits. GGT levels were measured from all participants, and the individual and joint impacts of the different study variables on GGT levels were assessed. Significant individual effects were noted for ethanol use (p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), age (p < 0.001) and smoking (p < 0.001). In men, significant two-factor interactions occurred between ethanol use and age (p < 0.020). Among those over 40 years of age, ethanol consumption was found to be a stronger determinant of increased GGT levels than in men below 40 years, whereas in the latter age group, BMI was found to predominate. In women, a significant two-factor interaction occurred between ethanol and BMI (p = 0.010), whereas it did not with ethanol use and age. The data underscores the role of ethanol consumption and age as major determinants of increased GGT levels in men, whereas in women, a relatively stronger impact was noted for ethanol intake and BMI. In light of the ability of GGT enzyme to modulate crucial redox-sensitive functions, the present findings also support the use of GGT as a biomarker of oxidative stress.  相似文献

Controlled partial neutralization of an amphoteric aminomethylphosphonium functional ion exchange resin (Lewatit TP-260) was investigated. The particular goal of controlled neutralization was to replace H+ in the acidic phosphonium groups with Na+ ions but leave the basic amino groups protonated. In this manner, metals’ sorption is enhanced and undesired pH changes during the metal separation process are avoided. The conjugate bases of organic weak acids (sodium formiate, sodium acetate and sodium citrate), sodium phosphate and NaOH were studied as neutralizing agents. The organic acid salts and sodium phosphate were all found to be suitable. Lengthening the neutralization cycle and using more concentrated neutralization agents were found to yield higher extents of neutralization and more uniform profiles along a resin bed. Concentrated NaOH also neutralized the amine group from the resin. With dilute NaOH, desired extent of neutralization was not achieved within a reasonable time. The effect of partial neutralization on metal sorption was tested with dynamic single column experiments. 5.5 BV of Ag–NaCl solution could be purified from Ca, Mg, Pb and Zn when the resin was partially neutralized with 2.0 M NaAc. With the acid form resin, the impurity metals broke through at 1.0 BV.  相似文献
