The prominence of small professional service providers in a fragmented construction sector in part relates to the ability to provide competitive advantage through the provision of a personalized service in a context where diseconomies of scale prevail. The Greek construction industry is particularly representative of this trend towards the dominance of small businesses. The small business owner relies upon their ability to secure critical resources through personal networks which provide information, advice, funding and brokerage. Resource provision ego-networks are investigated structurally using social network analysis. A multiple case study approach is employed with comparative social network analysis, focusing on the density of ego-networks and the prominence of resource providers and associated subgroups. Findings show that commercial development activity is promoted through high-density networks, which infers that higher levels of connectivity characterize networks operating in environments of uncertainty. As these critical resource networks mature, they appear to rely less on strong ties and temporary formal project networks. Contractual relationships appear to co-exist with reciprocal flows of resources outside the contract's scope.

L'importance des petits prestataires de services professionnels dans un secteur du bâtiment qui est fragmenté tient pour partie à la capacité à assurer un avantage concurrentiel par la fourniture d'un service personnalisé dans un contexte où les déséconomies d'échelle prévalent. L'industrie grecque du bâtiment est particulièrement représentative de cette tendance à la dominance des petites entreprises. Le propriétaire d'une petite entreprise s'appuie sur sa capacité à garantir des ressources critiques par des réseaux personnels qui fournissent des informations, des conseils, du financement et des services de courtage. Les ego-réseaux prestataires de ressources sont examinés d'un point de vue structurel en utilisant une analyse des réseaux sociaux. Il est employé une approche basée sur une étude de cas multiples s'accompagnant d'une analyse comparative des réseaux sociaux, centrée sur la densité des ego-réseaux et sur l'importance des prestataires de ressources et des sous-groupes associés. Les résultats constatés montrent que la promotion des activités de développement commercial se fait par les réseaux haute densité, ce qui induit que des niveaux supérieurs de connectivité caractérisent les réseaux fonctionnant dans des contextes marqués par l'incertitude. Au fur et à mesure que ces réseaux de ressources critiques mûrissent, ils semblent moins s'appuyer sur des liens forts et des réseaux temporaires en rapport avec des projets formels. Il apparaît que les relations contractuelles coexistent avec des flux de ressources réciproques en dehors du champ du contrat.

The fate of acid-adapted and nonadapted Listeria monocytogenes inoculated onto bologna slices (formulated with or without antimicrobials) was examined during storage and after exposure to in vitro gastric challenge. Bologna slices formulated with no antimicrobials (control), 3% sodium lactate (SL), or 1.8% SL plus 0.25% sodium diacetate (SD) were inoculated (2 log CFU/cm2) with a 10-strain composite of acid-adapted or nonadapted L. monocytogenes strains. Growth or survival of the two inocula on bologna was evaluated during vacuum-packaged storage (10 degrees C) for up to 36 days. Survival of previously acid-adapted or nonadapted L. monocytogenes on stored bologna exposed to simulated gastric fluid (adjusted to pH 1.0 with HCl) for 20, 40, and 60 min also was determined. As expected, inclusion of antimicrobials in the product formulation inhibited growth of L. monocytogenes during storage of vacuum-packaged bologna compared with growth on control samples. Acid adaptation of L. monocytogenes prior to product inoculation did not affect subsequent survival or growth on bologna or resistance to simulated gastric fluid (P > 0.05). Survival of L. monocytogenes exposed to simulated gastric fluid during storage increased with product age, growth phase of the cells, and possibly age of the cells, particularly for control samples (no antimicrobials), in which the pathogen grew uninhibited to approximately 6 log CFU/cm2 by day 8 of storage. Inhibition of L. monocytogenes growth on product formulated with antimicrobials was associated with only sporadic and small numbers of survivors following exposure of these samples to simulated gastric fluid, especially in samples stored longer. However, cell numbers in these treatment groups before the gastric challenge did not exceed 3.8 log CFU/cm2. Inhibition of growth on product with antimicrobials precluded detection of survivors resistant to the effects of simulated gastric fluid.  相似文献

In our days, efficient management of the available network resources becomes a critical issue, both from a functional point of view (so that users can be provided with the bandwidth they need), and an economical point of view (so that carriers can satisfactorily and efficiently serve as many customers as possible and at the same time increase their revenue). In this paper we consider a bandwidth control scheme (i.e. managed bandwidth service) for an ATM network infrastructure which is applied to the Greek research and technology network (GRNET). We present some methods that we have tested (in a simulation setting) in order to increase the efficiency of the system and the utilization of the available bandwidth. More specifically, we consider a bandwidth‐resizing algorithm for virtual paths, in order to keep the allocated bandwidth very close to the bandwidth actually used. This leads to an increased number of accepted requests and better network utilization. We, also, use the simulation results in order to get an estimation of the effective bandwidth for VBR paths that can be used in call admission. Finally, we consider a semi‐offline scheme where requests are gathered and considered for acceptance in regular intervals. Simulation results show an increase in the utilization of resources. As a further improvement, we allow connections to be allocated a little before or after the time initially requested. This leads to further improvement in network utilization. Sexual hormone concentrations are commonly affected in chronic renal failure. The contribution of sex steroids to bone turnover regulation implies that sex steroid's dysfunction may be implicated in the emergence of renal osteodystrophy. This study was conducted to evaluate sex steroids and gonadotrophins in hemodialysis (HD) patients and to investigate their role in bone homeostasis in concert with other hormones and cytokines. Bone mineral density (BMD) at the proximal femur and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), osteoprotegerin, soluble receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (sRANKL), prolactin, total testosterone, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in serum samples in 42 patients, 21 men and 21 women, on maintenance HD therapy. Possible associations between clinical characteristics, biochemical parameters, and BMD values were investigated. In male HD patients, the testosterone concentration declined significantly with aging, whereas the estradiol level increased with longer duration of HD. Concurrently, testosterone correlated negatively with sRANKL concentrations (r=-0.520, p=0.016). Luteinizing hormone levels in male patients demonstrated statistically significant negative correlations with BMD values of the proximal femur. In the entire cohort of patients, FSH and LH were negatively associated with absolute values of proximal femur BMD. Gonadotrophin and sexual hormone concentrations in HD patients are associated with bone mineral status and consequently their derangements appear to contribute to the development of bone composition abnormalities in different types of renal osteodystrophy. Furthermore, testosterone's association with sRANKL levels in male HD patients suggests that RANKL may mediate the effect of testosterone on bone metabolism in these patients.  相似文献

High-frequency ultrasound array transducers using piezoelectric thin films on larger structures are being developed for high-resolution imaging systems. The increase in resolution is achieved by a simultaneous increase in operating frequency (30 MHz to about 1 GHz) and close coupling of the electronic circuitry. Two different processing methods were explored to fabricate array transducers. In one implementation, a xylophone bar transducer was prototyped, using thin film PbZr(0.52)Ti(0.48)O(3) (PZT) as the active piezoelectric layer. In the other, the piezoelectric transducer was prepared by mist deposition of PZT films over electroplated Ni posts. Because the PZT films are excited through the film thickness, the drive voltages of these transducers are low, and close coupling of the electronic circuitry is possible. A complementary metal-oxidesemiconductor (CMOS) transceiver chip for a 16-element array was fabricated in 0.35-microm process technology. The ultrasound front-end chip contains beam-forming electronics, receiver circuitry, and analog-to-digital converters with 3-Kbyte on-chip buffer memory.  相似文献

Mass‐adoption of thin‐film silicon (TF‐Si) photovoltaic modules as a renewable energy source can be viable if the cost of electricity production from the module is competitive with conventional energy solutions. Increased module performance (electrical power generated) is an approach to reduce this cost. Progress towards higher conversion efficiencies for ‘champion’ large area modules paves the way for mass‐production module performance to follow. At TEL Solar AG, Trübbach, Switzerland, significant progress in the absolute stabilized module conversion efficiency has been achieved through optimized solar cell design that integrates high‐quality amorphous and microcrystalline TF‐Si‐deposited materials with efficient light management and transparent conductive oxide layers in a tandem MICROMORPH™ module. This letter reports a world record large area (1.43 m2) stabilized module conversion efficiency of 12.34% certified by the European Solar Test Installation; an increase of more than 1.4% absolute compared with the previous record for a TF‐Si triple junction large area module. This breakthrough result generates more than 13.2% stabilized efficiency from each equivalent 1 cm2 of the active area of the full module. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis was described as the principal component of the stress response 85 years ago, along with the acute-phase reaction, and the defense response at the tissue level. The orchestration of these processes is essential since systemic inflammation is a double-edged sword; whereas inflammation that is timely and of appropriate magnitude is beneficial, exuberant systemic inflammation incites tissue damage with potentially devastating consequences. Apart from its beneficial cardiovascular and metabolic effects, cortisol exerts a significant immunoregulatory role, a major attribute being that it restrains the excessive inflammatory reaction, thereby preventing unwanted tissue damage. In this review, we will discuss the role of the HPA axis in the normal stress response and in critical illness, especially in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Finally, a chapter will be dedicated to the findings from clinical studies in critical illness and COVID-19 on the expression of the mediator of glucocorticoid actions, the glucocorticoid receptor (GCR).  相似文献
