The Libyan economy is dominated by the oil and the gas industry which are considered as the primary energy sources for the generating power plants. With the increased energy demands in the near future, Libya will be forced to burn more oil and gas. This, in turn will result in reducing the country revenue, threatening the economy and increasing the CO2 emission. This triggers the alarm for Libya to an urgent plan to diversify the energy sources through using sustainable energy. The sun showers Libya every day by a huge amount of sunshine, especially during the peaks in the summer days. Recently, the country has been struggling to satisfy its escalating energy demands. The residential and street lighting loads constitute more than 50% of the electricity demands in Libya. Street lighting consumes more than 3.996 TW h, which is around one fifth of the energy demands in Libya. Energy conservation and transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy could have significant profit on the energy sector in Libya. For example, Libya is still relying on the old-fashioned, inefficient and unsustainable street lighting systems. Replacing the old technology lighting systems with up-to-date solar powered lighting system can achieve energy saving and sustainability. In this paper, improving the energy situation in Libya through replacing the high pressure sodium street lighting systems with solar powered LED street lighting systems is investigated. A four km road is chosen as a case study. Four alternatives are analyzed; grid-powered high pressure sodium lamp street lighting system, grid-powered LED lamp street lighting system, stand-alone solar powered LED street lighting system and grid-connected solar powered LED street lighting system. The four options are compared in terms of the capital cost, maintenance cost, total cost, fuel cost and the CO2 emission. Replacing the high pressure sodium lamp system with LED lamp system saves 75% of energy and reduces the CO2 emission by 75%. The stand-alone solar powered LED lighting system cuts the CO2 emission, saves the fuel and is economically feasible. Furthermore, improvement is attained if the solar powered lighting system is connected to the grid where the excess energy is fed to the grid. The two solar powered options are economically feasible and sustainable.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to examine varying extraction conditions of Thymus vulgaris L. as related to phenolic content and profiles of the extracts and their antioxidant, antihypertensive and antidiabetic properties. Phenolics were extracted under various conditions pertaining to free and bound phenolics, solvent type and combination of extraction time and temperature, and these extracts were evaluated in terms of their antioxidant activities and inhibitory activities of angiotensin‐converting enzyme (ACE), α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase. The acetone–water solvent mixture (1:1; v/v) produced the extract with the greatest phenolic content, antioxidant activity and inhibitory activities of ACE and α‐glucosidase. The optimal extraction temperature for maximum phenolic content and antioxidant activity associated with methanol extraction was 60 °C, whereas a lower temperature at 40 °C was required to maximise inhibitory activities for ACE, α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase. An inverse relationship was seen between antioxidant and glucosidase inhibitory activities vs. the ACE and α‐amylase inhibitory activities, which suggests the need for extractions to be directed to specific bioactivities of thyme extracts. Generally, the results indicate major differences in phenolic profiles among the tested extraction conditions with thymol as the predominant phenolic seen in most extractions, while gallic acid, rosmarinic acid or diosmin also predominated in other extracts. Extracts with the same predominant phenolic compound and similar phenolic content showed major disparities in their ACE, glucosidase and α‐amylase inhibitory activities, indicating that the major phenolic profiles of thyme extracts may not be necessarily related to the degree of inhibition of ACE, glucosidase and α‐amylase enzymes.  相似文献

In this paper, a multi‐purpose hybrid desiccant integrated vapor‐compression air‐conditioning system of a small capacity is experimentally investigated. The system, referred as hybrid desiccant‐assisted air conditioner (HDAC), is designed to meet the cooling load of spaces having large latent heat portions and at the same time to extract water from atmospheric air. The system is mainly consisted of a liquid‐desiccant dehumidification unit integrated with a vapor‐compression system (VCS). The dehumidification unit uses lithium chloride (LiCl) solution as the working material. The effect of different parameters, such as desiccant solution flow rate, process airflow rate, evaporator and condenser temperatures, strong solution concentration and regeneration temperature on the performance of the system, is studied. This system has a water recovery rate of 6.7 l/h TR (1.91 l/h kW) of pure water at typical north Egyptian climate (20–30°C dry bulb and 35–45% relative humidity). The HDAC system has a COP as high as 3.8 (an improvement of about 68% over the conventional VCS). The system offers a total cooling capacity of about 1.75 TR (6.15 kW) using a 0.75 TR (2.6 kW) VCS unit. Finally, the proposed system is found to have a payback time of about 10 months without any considerable extra capital cost compared with the known split air‐conditioning system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal and antioxidant activities of curcumin, ascorbic acid and the mixture of these two compounds. For the antifungal assay, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using Candida strains (ATCC and clinical isolates). Curcumin alone inhibited growth of Candida albicans yeast cells, whereas ascorbic acid did not present effects. However, when the mixture of ascorbic acid and curcumin was assayed to determine the association of the two compounds, the curcumin MIC decreased 5- to 10-fold. In the antioxidant assays, the sum of the alone activities of curcumin and ascorbic acid were lower than the activity of the two-compound mixture. This study highlights the importance of the association between two common antioxidants in foods, to improve the antifungal and antioxidant activities of curcumin (in vitro), and can be applied to Candida spp. infection and diseases associated with oxidative stress.  相似文献

Nanotechnology is a promising technique to increase the bioavailability of herbal medicines. This paper presents the nanosuspension approach for increasing the aqueous solubility and thereby bioactivity of important herbal extracts. Nanosuspensions of the seeds of three plants extract (Silybum marianum, Elettaria cardamomum and Coriandrum sativum) were prepared by using polyvinyl alcohol (1.5% w/v) as a stabiliser. Prepared nanoparticles were characterised by scanning electron microscope. Activity of nanosuspension formulation was assessed by using four in vitro antioxidant assays. S. marianum, E. cardamomum and C. sativum particle size was observed to fall in range of 446.1 ± 112.6, 456.63 ± 339.2 and 432.1 ± 172.8 nm, respectively, most of the particles were having spherical shape and smooth topology. These synthesised nanoparticles were found to be more effective against quenching free radical than their crude extracts and standards [butylated hydroxyl toluene and ascorbic acid]. C. sativum nanosuspension showed most free radical scavenging potential against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhdrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide free radical scavenging assays (IC50 0.59 ± 0.01 and 0.81 ± 0.11 mg/ml). S. marianum nanosuspension was found to be most effective against DPPH radicals scavenging (IC50 0.34 ± 0.02 mg/ml). It was concluded that nanosuspension of herbal medicines potentiates the antioxidant potential.  相似文献

Porous solid polysiloxane ligand systems bearing an iminodiacetic acid chelating ligand of the general formula P-IDA (where P- represents [Si-O] n polysiloxane network and IDA represent an organofunctional group) were achieved in two-step reaction. The first step includes a template synthesis of 3-iodopropylpolysiloxane (P-I) or 3-aminopropylpolysiloxane (P-MA) by hydrolytic polycondensation of TEOS and the corresponding silane agent in the presence of CTAB as a surfactant. The second step includes a modification of 3-iodopropylpolysiloxane with diethyliminodiacetate or 3-aminopropylpolysiloxane with ethylchloroacetate to produce IDA-functionalized polysiloxane ligand systems P-IDA-I & P-IDA-II respectively. It was found that the modified IDA-functionalized polysiloxane ligand systems exhibited higher capacities for uptake of the metal ions (Ni 2+, Cu 2+ and Pb 2+) than those prepared without surfactants.  相似文献

Developing only Fe derived bifunctional overall water splitting electrocatalyst both for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) while performing at low onset overpotential and with high catalytic stability is a rare instance. We present here the first demonstration of unique iron-oxide nanobeads (FeOx-NBs) based electrocatalyst executing both OER and HER with high activity. Thin-film electrocatalytic FeOx-NBs assembly is surface grown via simple spray coating (SC). The unique SC/FeOx-NBs propels OER initiating water oxidation just at 1.49 VRHE (η = 260 mV) that is the lowest observable onset potential for OER on simple Fe-oxide based catalytic films reported so far. Catalyst also reveals decently high HER activity and competent overall water splitting performance in the FeOx-NBs two-electrode system as well. Catalyst also presents stable kinetics, with promising high electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 1765 cm2, notable Tafel slopes of just 54 mV dec1? (OER) and 85 mV dec1? (HER), high exchange current density of 1.10 mA cm2? (OER), 0.58 mA cm2? (HER) and TOF of 74.29s1?@1.58VRHE, 262s1?@1.62VRHE (OER) and 82.5s1?@-0.45VRHE, 681s1?@-0.56VRHE (HER).  相似文献

In this paper, we analyzed squeezing in the information entropy, quantum state fidelity, and qubit-qubit entanglement in a time-dependent system. The proposed model consists of two qubits that interact with a two-mode electromagnetic field under the dissipation effect. An analytical solution is calculated by considering the constants for the equations of motion. The effect of the general form of the time-dependent for qubit-field coupling and the dissipation term on the temporal behavior of the qubit-qubit entanglement, quantum state fidelity, entropy, and variance squeezing are examined. It is shown that the intervals of entanglement caused more squeezing for the case of considering the time-dependent parameters. Additionally, the entanglement between the qubits became more substantial for the case of time dependence. Fidelity and negativity rapidly reached the minimum values by increasing the effect of the dissipation parameter. Moreover, the amount of variance squeezing and the amplitude of the oscillations decreased considerably when the time dependence increased, but the fluctuations increased substantially. We show the relation between entropy and variance squeezing in the presence and absence of the dissipation parameter during the interaction period. This result enables new parameters to control the degree of entanglement and squeezing, especially in quantum communication.  相似文献
