The first ultra-strong, near-perfect, raised-apodised Bragg gratings in As/sub 2/S/sub 3/ chalcogenide rib waveguides using /spl lambda/=532 nm light and a modified Sagnac holographic writing setup are demonstrated. Our objective was to review the factors that affect fiber passage from the rumen. Rumen residence time and passage from the rumen are important in control of intake, digestibility, protein metabolism, and protein escape. Physical factors associated with particle size and particle specific gravity affect passage from the rumen. Although particles of 5 cm may pass through the reticulo-omasal orifice, most particles leaving the rumen are smaller than 1 mm. Polypropylene ribbon cut into 7-cm lengths, introduced into the rumen, markedly reduced intake and were ruminated to fine particle size before being passed. Materials with specific gravity less than 1.0 are ruminated extensively and are passed slowly. As specific gravity of plastic particles increase, rumination of particles is decreased and passage is increased. Particles with specific gravities between 1.17 and 1.42 pass most rapidly. Increasing specific gravities further results in a decline in passage and a further lowering of rumination of particles. Natural hay and fresh forages are hydrated in the rumen, which causes functional specific gravity to increase. Some factors that affect rate of change of functional specific gravity of forages have been investigated. Small particle size, autoclaved rumen fluid, buffer solutions, and specific salts increased the rate of change of functional specific gravity of particles. Understanding of these factors may enable us to make better decisions in managing ruminant productions systems. 相似文献

The extent to which protein synthesis is involved in working memory was investigated with the protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin (ANI). Male albino and Long-Evans rats were trained to perform accurately on a 12-arm radial maze when delays of 240 min were interposed between Choice 6 and Choice 7. Bilateral hippocampal cannulas were then implanted. Accuracy on Choices 7–22 was studied when ANI (80 μg/μl) or saline was injected either 30 min before Choice 1 or 5–20 min after Choice 6 in Exp I. Pretrial injection of ANI significantly impaired performance following the 240-min delay, whereas ANI injected during the delay had no such effect. In Exps II and III, the ANI-induced amnesia was replicated, and the temporal course of development of the amnesia was determined. Pretrial administration of ANI did not significantly affect retention after a 2-min delay but produced amnesia after delays of 15 min or longer. Data suggest that protein synthesis is important for the formation of temporary memories, provided the retention interval is long enough. It is suggested that working memory includes both short- and long-term components. Protein synthesis appears to be important for formation of the long-term component, but not the short-term component, of working memory. The production of zearalenone by an isolate of Fusarium equiseti was studied in chemically defined medium and in corn grains stored under modified atmospheres. An increase in the concentrations of sucrose or xylose in Czapek's medium resulted in increased toxin production, while no toxin was produced when lactose was present in the medium. Methionine (10(-2) and 10(-3) M) and cystine (10(-3) M) added to Czapek's medium inhibited zearalenone production. When amino acids or nitrogen salts were added as the sole nitrogen source, only alanine, tryptophan and NH4Cl totally inhibited zearalenone production. Zearalenone production was inhibited almost completely in high-moisture corn grains (27%) kept under atmospheres enriched with high CO2 levels (60%, 40% or 20%) with either 20% or 5% O2. However, a lower amount of CO2 was needed to inhibit fungal development and toxin formation when a reduced O2 level was applied. 相似文献

Several companies have made major strides in marketing cellular telephones to children within the past 12 months; more and more children are using cell phones as part of their daily routines. Some fear any disturbance to brain activity in children could lead to impaired learning ability or behavioral problems. Moreover, any lasting biochemical effects could have important consequences, especially in the young, who still have years of development ahead of them. Recently, two studies of the mental process of young users of standard 902 MHz Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) cellular mobile telephones were published: one paper reported a slight trend toward speeding up of simple reaction time, whereas the other study did not detect any change in cognitive functions. 相似文献

During large scale wildfires, suppression activities are carried out under the direction of an Incident Management Team (IMT). The aim of the research was to increase understanding of decision processes potentially related to IMT effectiveness. An IMT comprises four major functions: Command, Operations, Planning, and Logistics. Four methodologies were used to study IMT processes: computer simulation experiments; analyses of wildfire reports; interviews with IMT members; and cognitive ethnographic studies of IMTs. Three processes were important determinants of IMT effectiveness: information management and cognitive overload; matching component function goals to overall goals; and team metacognition to detect and counter task‐disruptive developments. These processes appear to be complex multi‐person analogues of individual Incident Command processes identified previously. The findings have implications for issues such as: creating IMTs; training IMTs; managing IMTs; and providing decision support to IMTs. 相似文献

A new phenomenon accompanying the electrolysis of salts has been observed, whereby an ordered composite is formed under certain conditions (electrolyte composition, current density). The composite comprises an inorganic salt crystal penetrated by metal nano- and microwires. Mechanical mechanisms with clearance abound in technological fields such as robotics, machine and steam turbine industry. The dynamic performance of these mechanisms in working condition can be achieved provided that the effects of the different on the mechanisms (such as mechanism dynamics, technological effects and thermal behaviour) are thoroughly understood. Virtual prototyping provides an integration of multi-domain dynamic simulation for the design and analysis process. In the current paper, a framework of virtual prototyping environment for the design and analysis of mechanical mechanism with clearance is presented. We have established that technological defects (cracks) in zirconium articles can develop in the course of long-term storage
prior to their mounting in a reactor, which is caused by the action of residual stresses and hydrogen. We have considered
the conditions of after-operation storage of zirconium articles of the fuel core of thermal reactors in water of the cooling
ponds of reactors and in spent-fuel storehouses. The possibility of subsequent hydrogenation of these articles during their
storage has been shown. Finally, we have studied the effect of hydrogen, absorbed in the course of storage, on the crack resistance
of zirconium articles and the development of defects in them due to delayed hydride cracking.
