Helical distributions of stokeslets can valuably model microbial locomotion through a fluid, and also the flow field generated, wherever a flagellum actively executes helical undulations (as in many single-celled algae and protozoa) or where (as in many bacteria) the action of rotary motors causes a passive structure of helical shape (which may be a flagellum or else the cell body itself) to rotate. Here, previous biomechanical studies of such modes of locomotion are extended to include analyses of three-dimensional flow fields. In some cases, a rotlet field (curl of a stokeslet) needs to be incorporated in the models. For example, spirochete swimming is modelled by combined helical distributions of stokeslets and rotlets; the computed flow field being confined to within distances of less than twice the radius of the cell body's helical shape from its axis, while including a powerful jet-like interior flow through the coils of the swimming spirochete. 相似文献

Lorentz [1] pioneered the representation of flows at very low Reynolds number by a surface distribution of stokeslets — whose strengths, nowadays, are computed by surface-velocity collocations. That method is here compared with a representation widely used in flagellar hydrodynamics, by a curvilinear distribution of stokeslets and dipoles along the flagellar centreline; with the velocity of each cross-section expressed as a centreline value of the combined fields of singularities beyond a certain cutoff distance. The latter is also a good representation, and offers moreover some computational advantages. This paper establishes the equivalence of the two representations, and identifies those properties of Stokes flows which make both the dipoles and the cutoff essential to that equivalence. 相似文献

Packaging engineers need to be able to accurately determine the forces present in the shipping environment in order to protect packaged goods. The purpose of this study was to determine the vertical vibration levels measured in three separate truck-trailer suspension systems; conventional leaf-spring, conventional air-ride and damaged air-ride. The main conclusion reached in this study is that the air-ride suspension when maintained gives lower power density (PD) levels on all road surfaces studied. A damaged air-ride suspension and leaf-spring suspension are very similar in response frequencies, although the damaged air-ride produces higher vibration levels at lower frequencies. 相似文献

What has become known as Community Operational Research has been around in the UK for many years. The election of Jonathan Rosenhead as President of the UK OR Society in 1986–87 was the catalyst for bringing together and expanding activities which had been carried out largely by individuals working in isolation on a voluntary basis. The following five years have seen the establishment of the Community OR Unit at Northern College, the Centre for Community OR at Hull University and the Community OR Network, which supports the activities of volunteer OR workers across the UK. This paper reviews the range and types of work which have been undertaken by various practitioners. An assessment of the success of community OR is made and a number of issues which have arisen are discussed. Abstract: Environmental justice advocates have recently focused attention on cumulative exposure in minority neighborhoods due to multiple sources of pollution. This article uses U.S. EPA's National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) for 1996 to examine environmental inequality in California, a state that has been a recent innovator in environmental justice policy. We first estimate potential lifetime cancer risks from mobile and stationary sources. We then consider the distribution of these risks using both simple comparisons and a multivariate model in which we control for income, land use, and other explanatory factors, as well as spatial correlation. We find large racial disparities in California's “riskscape” as well as inequalities by other factors and suggest several implications for environmental and land use policy. 相似文献

This article discusses the phenomenon of youth violence from a psychology of gender perspective. Although other factors are discussed--including gun availability, violence-related media influence, family and caretaker factors, and effects of teasing and bullying--the intention is to highlight new thinking on the potential relationship between boys' traditional masculine socialization experiences and violence. In this new perspective, traditional masculine socialization estranges and isolates many boys from their genuine inner lives and vital connections to others, which is theorized to heighten their risk of engaging in acts of violence. The authors identify school and community programs that may be helpful in counteracting damaging socialization experiences and supporting boys' healthier emotional and psychological development. Finally, the article discusses approaches that psychologists and other mental health professionals can use to help address this vital issue.
