Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) allow wireless nodes to form a network without requiring a fixed infrastructure. Early routing protocols for MANETs failed to take security issues into account. Subsequent proposals used strong cryptographic methods to secure the routing information. In the process, however, these protocols created new avenues for denial of service (DoS). Consequently, the trade-off between security strength and DoS vulnerability has emerged as an area requiring further investigation. It is believed that different trust methods can be used to develop protocols at various levels in this trade-off. To gain a handle on this exchange, real world testing that evaluates the cost of existing proposals is necessary. Without this, future protocol design is mere speculation. In this paper, we give the first comparison of SAODV and TAODV, two MANET routing protocols, which address routing security through cryptographic and trust-based means respectively. We provide performance comparisons on actual resource-limited hardware. Finally, we discuss design decisions for future routing protocols.  相似文献

High circular tombs (HCTs) in southern Arabia provide valuable information for anthropologists who seek fundamental understanding of the transition of ancient peoples from a nomadic pastoral lifestyle, to agro-pastoralism, and eventually to the formation of ancient states. In particular, knowing the geographical distribution of HCTs across the region informs theories on patterns of territoriality and environmental and social factors that are implicated in the emergence of ancient civilizations.

The small size of the HCTs, vast search regions, and rugged terrain make mapping them in the field difficult and costly. In this article, a detection algorithm is described and quantitatively evaluated and establishes the feasibility of automatically detecting these tombs in satellite imagery. By narrowing the search to a smaller set of candidate locations, wide area discovery and mapping can be performed much more effectively.  相似文献

The recombinant expression of immunoglobulin domains, Fabs and scFvs in particular, in Escherichia coli can vary significantly from antibody to antibody. We hypothesized that poor Fab expression is often linked to poor intrinsic stability. To investigate this further, we applied a novel approach for stabilizing a poorly expressing anti-tetanus toxoid human Fab with a predisposition for being misfolded and non-functional. Forty-five residues within the Fab were chosen for saturation mutagenesis based on residue frequency analysis and positional entropy calculations. Using automated screening, we determined the approximate midpoint temperature of thermal denaturation (TM) for over 4000 library members with a maximum theoretical diversity of 855 unique mutations. This dataset led to the identification of 11 residue positions, primarily in the Fv region, which when mutated enhanced Fab stability. By combining these mutations, the TM of the Fab was increased to 92 degrees C. Increases in Fab stability correlated with higher expressed Fab yields and higher levels of properly folded and functional protein. The mutations were selected based on their ability to increase the apparent stability of the Fab and therefore the exact mechanism behind the enhanced expression in E.coli remains undefined. The wild-type and two optimized Fabs were converted to an IgG1 format and expressed in mammalian cells. The optimized IgG1 molecules demonstrated identical gains in thermostability compared to the Fabs; however, the expression levels were unaffected suggesting that the eukaryotic secretion system is capable of correcting potential folding issues prevalent in E.coli. Overall, the results have significant implications for the bacterial expression of functional antibody domains as well as for the production of stable, high affinity therapeutic antibodies in mammalian cells.  相似文献

Humans respond adaptively to uncertainty by escaping or seeking additional information. To foster a comparative study of uncertainty processes, we asked whether humans and a bottlenosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) would use similarly a psychophysical uncertain response. Human observers and the dolphin were given 2 primary discrimination responses and a way to escape chosen trials into easier ones. Humans escaped sparingly from the most difficult trials near threshold that left them demonstrably uncertain of the stimulus. The dolphin performed nearly identically. The behavior of both species is considered from the perspectives of signal detection theory and optimality theory, and its appropriate interpretation is discussed. Human and dolphin uncertain responses seem to be interesting cognitive analogs and may depend on cognitive or controlled decisional mechanisms. The capacity to monitor ongoing cognition, and use uncertainty appropriately, would be a valuable adaptation for animal minds. The temporal response of pulsed nano-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (nano-ESI-MS) was studied and its influence on ion formation and detection was characterized. Rise and decay times for the mass resolved ion current were determined to be 20 ± 3 msec and 61 ± 5 msec, respectively, which led to a maximum pulse rate of 12 Hz. Pulsed nano-ESI operation was demonstrated from a multi-sprayer source controlled by a high voltage pulsing circuit constructed in-house. The desired source mode of operation (e.g. pulsing or continuous) can be realized solely by controlling the voltage applied to each sprayer.  相似文献

Among the many new opportunities that digital technologies are enabling are an increased capacity for viewers to interact not only with the program content, but with an increasingly wide array of other digital applications. Within this context this project has developed a new interaction device (incorporating gestural platform technology) and user interfaces to facilitate interactive access to digital media in a lounge room setting. This paper provides an overview of an interdisciplinary design process applied by Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID) researchers—in order to develop the device and present in detail its unique features.  相似文献

An original modeling framework for assessment of climate variation and change impacts on the performance of complex flood protection system has been implemented in the evaluation of the impact of climate variability and change on the reliability, vulnerability and resiliency of the Red River Basin flood protection system (Manitoba, Canada). The modeling framework allows for an evaluation of different climate change scenarios generated by the global climate models. Temperature and precipitation are used as the main factors affecting flood flow generation. System dynamics modeling approach proved to be of great value in the development of system performance assessment model. The most important impact of climate variability and change on hydrologic processes is reflected in the change of flood patterns: flood starting time, peak value and timing. The results show increase in the annual precipitation and the annual streamflow volume in the Red River basin under the future climate change scenarios. Most of the floods generated using three different climate models had an earlier starting time and peak time. The assessment of the performance of Red River flood protection system is based on the flood flows, the capacity of flood control structures and failure flow levels at different locations in the basin. In the Assiniboine River Basin, higher reliabilities at downstream locations are obtained indicating that Shellmouth reservoir plays an important role in reducing downstream flooding. However, a different trend was identified in the Red River Basin. The study results show that flood protection capacity of the Red River infrastructure is sufficient under low reliability criteria but may not be sufficient under high reliability criteria.  相似文献

Fabrication of micro optics for fiber optics applications is a challenge due to their size and the issues associated with alignment of the optics to single-mode fibers. This study summarizes a method for fabricating diffractive optical elements on the ends of coreless fiber segments for passive alignment to single-mode fibers. Results are presented for passively aligned diffractive lens elements used for both collimation and beam shaping.  相似文献

Perchlorate (ClO4-) competitively inhibits the uptake of iodide by the thyroid gland. Trace quantities of perchlorate are being increasingly detected in food and environmental samples. There is great concern that perchlorate contamination may be far more widespread than believed until now. Increasingly sensitive and unambiguous methods are needed for measuring perchlorate. We report here an ion chromatography-ion association-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (IC/IA-ESI-MS) method of substantially greater selectivity and sensitivity than other available single-stage MS approaches. A long chain dipositive cationic agent (D2+) is added postcolumn in low concentration. This ion associates with perchlorate, even in the gas phase. Perchlorate is, thus, detected as DClO4+ in the positive ion mode at an m/z value between 300 and 400 (depending on the choice of D2+). This results in much better S/N and selectivity, as compared to detecting 35ClO4- at m/z 99, where H34SO4- also responds. We show results for various dicationic agents which vary in their selectivity and affinity for ClO4-, typically being at least 1 order of magnitude more selective for ClO4- over HSO4-. For a 100-microL injected standard, limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) are as good as 25 ng/L on a single quadrupole mass spectrometer. Calibration for concentrations up to 100 microg/L displays an r2 value of > or =0.9993. We show applicability to various real samples. A number of the studied reagents are suitable for such applications.  相似文献
