Many computer and robot vision applications require multi-scale image analysis. Classically, this has been accomplished through the use of a linear scale-space, which is constructed by convolution of visual input with Gaussian kernels of varying size (scale). This has been shown to be equivalent to the solution of a linear diffusion equation on an infinite domain, as the Gaussian is the Green's function of such a system (Koenderink, 1984). Recently, much work has been focused on the use of a variable conductance function resulting in anisotropic diffusion described by a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE). The use of anisotropic diffusion with a conductance coefficient which is a decreasing function of the gradient magnitude has been shown to enhance edges, while decreasing some types of noise (Perona and Malik, 1987). Unfortunately, the solution of the anisotropic diffusion equation requires the numerical integration of a nonlinear PDE which is a costly process when carried out on a uniform mesh such as a typical image. In this paper we show that the complex log transformation, variants of which are universally used in mammalian retino-cortical systems, allows the nonlinear diffusion equation to be integrated at exponentially enhanced rates due to the nonuniform mesh spacing inherent in the log domain. The enhanced integration rates, coupled with the intrinsic compression of the complex log transformation, yields a speed increase of between two and three orders of magnitude, providing a means of performing rapid image enhancement using anisotropic diffusion. 相似文献

We describe a high incidence of Plasmodium vivax malaria among travelers returning from Ethiopia, who all took the recommended prophylaxis. Three groups of 7-11 nonimmune travelers received mefloquine (250 mg weekly), beginning 1-2 weeks prior to departure and continuing for 4 weeks after their return. A fourth group mistakenly took inadequate prophylaxis and is presented for comparison. Vivax malaria occurred at a rate of up to 50% in the first three groups; nearly all patients became ill 3 months after exposure. In the fourth group, primary attacks of both falciparum and vivax malaria occurred within 1 month of return, at an incidence of 50%. The use of mefloquine prevented Plasmodium falciparum infection, but a very high rate of relapses of P. vivax infection occurred. The complexity of prophylaxis for malaria in an area with a high rate of both P. falciparum and P. vivax infections and the urgent need for effective causal prophylaxis are discussed. 相似文献

In golden hamsters, microinjections of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) within the anterior hypothalamus trigger a stereotyped scent-marking behavior, flank marking. Our experiment was carried out to test the contribution of AVP neurons within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the control of this behavior. Our results suggest that the SCN does not contribute to flank-marking behavior. Whereas SCN lesions disrupted circadian rhythms of wheel running, the same lesions did not disrupt flank-marking. The results also suggest that neurons located outside the SCN contribute significantly to the vasopressinergic innervation of the brain and the expression of AVP-dependent behaviors, such as flank-marking behavior. Although AVP-immunoreactive fibers were severely (ca. 95%) depleted from several forebrain areas in SCN-lesioned hamsters, the effect of the lesions was much more limited within the forebrain areas involved in flank-marking behavior as well as within the midbrain and hindbrain. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The available data on low-dose oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use and stroke risk in US women are limited by small numbers. We sought more precise estimates by conducting a pooled analysis of data from 2 US population-based case-control studies. METHODS: We analyzed interview data from 175 ischemic stroke cases, 198 hemorrhagic stroke cases, and 1191 control subjects 18 to 44 years of age. RESULTS: For ischemic stroke, the pooled odds ratio (pOR) adjusted for stroke risk factors for current use of low-dose OCPs compared with women who had never used OCP (never users) was 0.66 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.29 to 1.47) and compared with women not currently using OCPs (nonusers) the pOR was 1.09 (95% CI, 0.54 to 2.21). For hemorrhagic stroke, the pOR for current use of low-dose OCPs compared with never users was 0.95 (95% CI, 0.46 to 1.93) and compared with nonusers the pOR was 1.11 (95% CI, 0.61 to 2.01). The pORs for current low-dose OCP use and either stroke type were not elevated among women who were >/=35 years, cigarette smokers, obese, or not receiving medical therapy for hypertension. pORs for current low-dose OCP use were 2.08 (95% CI, 1. 19 to 3.65) for ischemic stroke and 2.15 (95% CI, 0.85 to 5.45) for hemorrhagic stroke among women reporting a history of migraine but were not elevated among women without such a history. Past OCP use (irrespective of formulation) was inversely related to ischemic stroke but unrelated to hemorrhagic stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Women who use low-dose OCPs are, in the aggregate, not at increased risk of stroke. Studies are needed to clarify the risk of stroke among users who may be susceptible on the basis of age, smoking, obesity, hypertension, or migraine history. 相似文献

Our objective was to study the characteristics of transfer and biotransformation of nicotine in the human term placenta. Nicotine transfer was studied by dually perfusing an isolated cotyledon of the human placenta in vitro. Nicotine metabolism to cotinine was investigated in intact tissue during perfusion and in placental microsomal fractions. Following the addition of nicotine (40 ng/ml) to the maternal side of the placenta, distribution into placental tissue (0.43 +/- 0.13 ng/ml/min) was three times higher than transfer to the fetal side of the placenta (0.15 +/- 0.01 ng/ml/min). The steady-state maternal-to-fetal transfer of nicotine was approximately 90% that of antipyrine (a marker of flow-dependent transfer). There was no evidence of nicotine metabolism to cotinine by intact placental tissue or in microsomal fractions. The observation that nicotine readily crosses the human placenta with no evidence of metabolism suggests that nicotine has the potential to cause adverse affects on the developing fetus. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: As endothelin binds to ET(A) receptors, it stimulates vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and may thus be pivotally involved in the pathogenesis of restenosis. This study assessed the ability of a potent and selective ET(A) antagonist to reduce neointimal hyperplasia in a porcine coronary artery stented injury model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-five pigs were randomized to receive placebo or the oral ET(A)-selective antagonist ABT147627 twice daily for 28 days in one of three doses: 0.75 mg/kg (low), 3.75 mg/kg (mid), and 10.0 mg/kg (high). Each underwent oversized stent deployment in two randomly assigned major epicardial coronary arteries. Three animals (5.5%) died as a consequence of stent thrombosis within 24 hours of the procedure. The remaining 52 animals (13 pigs per group) survived without complication until predetermined euthanasia at 28 days. In the placebo group, mean injury score was 1.73+/-0.80, with a mean neointimal response of 0.45+/-0.24 mm. By comparison, the low-dose group had a similar mean injury score of 1.79+/-0.75 with reduced neointimal response, 0.36+/-0.22 mm (P<0.01). Mean injury score in the mid-dose animals was significantly greater than in the placebo group (1.94+/-0.92; P<0.05). The neointimal hyperplasia associated with this injury was less than with placebo, although the difference did not reach statistical significance (0.40+/-0.25 mm; P=0.05). In the high-dose pigs, mean injury score was also significantly greater than in the placebo arm (1.93+/-0.73; P<0.05). Despite this, neointimal response was also significantly less (0.37+/-0.37 mm; P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Oral, selective ET(A) receptor antagonism significantly reduced neointimal hyperplasia forming over porcine coronary stented injuries in the first 28 days. This strategy may have clinical potential for the limitation and treatment of coronary restenosis after percutaneous revascularization. 相似文献

The authors present a maximum a posteriori method to identify faulty links in a communication network. A designated network node with management responsibilities determines a fault has occurred due to its inability to communicate with certain other nodes. Given this information as well as the information that it can communicate with another specified set of nodes, one would like to identify as quickly as possible a ranked list of the most probable failed network links.
