Age-related differences in the trajectories of saccadic eye movements were examined. Younger and older adult subjects produced saccades to predictable target locations. Detailed features of the movements were examined such as the time of peak acceleration and the variability in the magnitude of the peak velocity. These and other measures reveal important details of the force pulses underlying the eye movements and the mental mechanisms that control them. Although minor differences were apparent between the eye movements of younger and older adults, the general patterns were the same across age groups. These results suggest that fundamental details of the brain mechanisms involved in the control of movement are the same for younger and older adults. While biofilms are now known to be the predominant form of microbial growth in nature, very little is yet known about their role in environmental mercury (Hg) methylation. Findings of Hg methylation in periphyton communities have indicated the importance of investigating how environmental biofilms affect Hg methylation, as periphyton can be the base of the food webs in aquatic ecosystems. Chemical speciation influences the microbial uptake and methylation of inorganic Hg by planktonic cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria; however, the effect of speciation on Hg methylation by biofilm cultures of these organisms has previously not been studied. In the present study, Hg methylation rates in biofilm and planktonic cultures of two isolates of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans from a coastal wetland were compared. Notably, the specific Hg methylation rate found was approximately an order of magnitude higher (0.0018 vs. 0.0002 attomol cell(-1) day(-1)) in biofilm cells than in planktonic cells, suggesting an important role for environmental biofilms in Hg methylation. To investigate the role of chemical speciation of Hg, experiments were conducted at two levels of sulfide. Both biofilm and planktonic cultures produced methylmercury at roughly twice the rate at low sulfide, when HgS(0)(aq), rather than HgHS2-, was the dominant Hg species. This indicates that the presence of a biofilm does not alter the relative availability of the dominant Hg species in sulfidic medium, in accordance with our previous studies of Hg uptake by Escherichia coli along a chloride gradient. 相似文献

The mechanofusion process, a dry particle coating route, has been successfully applied to coat iron particles with alumina. The high-temperature oxidation resistance of Fe and coated Fe particles has been comparatively investigated in air in the temperature range 350°–900°C. The activation energy calculations demonstrate that, in the temperature range 350°–420°C, the oxidation mechanisms are the same for both particles. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses show that oxidation products are mainly formed at the iron/alumina interface at low temperatures or at the alumina/gas interface at high temperatures. Summary The polymerization of 1-hexyne, 3,3-dimethyl-1-butyne, 2-hexyne and 1-chloro-1-hexyne by using metal halide based initiators was studied. By analogy with ionic ring opening polymerization systems, living acetylene polymerizations resulted when backbiting and interchain reactions were suppressed, i.e., ktr, kt=0. Large acetylenic substituents suppress the formation of cis-cisoidal propagating chains and subsequently eliminate backbiting reactions and also propagating carbene interchain reactions. Emission properties and energy transfer of PbO–Bi2 O3 –Ga2 O3 –GeO2 glasses codoped with Tm3+ and Tb3+ ions were investigated. The 1.48-μm emission due to the Tm3+ :3 H4 →3 F4 transition can be used to amplify the S-band (1460–1530-nm) signal light. With Tb3+ addition, the lifetime and emission intensity of the Tm3+ :3 F4 level decreased sharply via the Tm3+ :3 F4 →Tb3+ :7 F0,1,2 energy transfer. Population densities of the 3 F4 and 3 H4 levels in Tm3+ calculated from rate equations clearly verified that population inversion in Tm3+ ions became possible with as little as 0.1 mol% of Tb3+ addition. 相似文献

An inter-comparison study of instruments designed to measure the microphysical and optical properties of soot particles was completed. The following mass-based instruments were tested: Couette Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer (CPMA), Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer—Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (AMS-SMPS), Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), Soot Particle-Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (SP-AMS) and Photoelectric Aerosol Sensor (PAS2000CE). Optical instruments measured absorption (photoacoustic, interferometric, and filter-based), scattering (in situ), and extinction (light attenuation within an optical cavity). The study covered an experimental matrix consisting of 318 runs that systematically tested the performance of instruments across a range of parameters including: fuel equivalence ratio (1.8 ≤ φ ≤ 5), particle shape (mass-mobility exponent ( D fm ), 2.0 ≤ D fm ≤ 3.0), particle mobility size (30 ≤ d m ≤ 300 nm), black carbon mass (0.07 ≤ m BC ≤ 4.2 fg) and particle chemical composition. In selected runs, particles were coated with sulfuric acid or dioctyl sebacate (DOS) (0.5 ≤ Δ r ve ≤ 201 nm) where Δ r ve is the change in the volume equivalent radius due to the coating material. The effect of non-absorbing coatings on instrument response was determined. Changes in the morphology of fractal soot particles were monitored during coating and denuding processes and the effect of particle shape on instrument response was determined. The combination of optical and mass based measurements was used to determine the mass specific absorption coefficient for denuded soot particles. Composition, shape factor, size, and fractal dimension of soot aerosol particles generated in a propane/O2, flame were determined as a function of the fuel equivalence ratio (φ). Soot particles were first size-selected by a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) and then analyzed by an Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS). The DMA provides particles of known mobility diameter (dm ). The AMS quantitatively measures the mass spectrum of the nonrefractory components of the particles and also provides the vacuum aerodynamic diam eter (dva ) corresponding to the particles of known mobility diameter. The measured dm, dva , and nonrefractory composition are used in a system of equations based on the formulation presented in the companion article to estimate the particle dynamic shape factor, total mass, and black carbon (BC) content. Fractal dimension was estimated based on the mass-mobility relationship. Two types of soot particles were observed depending on the fuel equivalence ratio. Type 1: for φ < 4 (lower propane/O2), dva ; was nearly constant and independent of dm . The value of dva increased with increasing φ. Analysis of the governing equations showed that these particles were highly irregular (likely fractal aggregates), with a dynamic shape factor that increased with dm and φ. The fractal dimension of these particles was approximately 1.7. These particles were composed mostly of BC, with the organic carbon content increasing as φ increased. At φ = 1.85, the particles were about 90% BC, 5% PAH, and 5% aliphatic hydrocarbon (particle density = 1.80 g/cm3). Type 2: for φ > 4 (high propane/O2), dva was linearly proportional to dm . Analysis of the governing equations showed that these particles were nearly spherical (likely compact aggregates), with a dynamic shape factor of 1.1 (versus 1 for a sphere) and a fr actal dimension of 2.95 (3 for a sphere). These particles were composed of about 50% PAH, 45% BC, and 5% aliphatic hydrocarbons (particle density = 1.50 g/cm3).
