On the notion of granularity

Granularity is a well known concept in parallel processing. While intuitively, the distinction between coarse-grain and fine-grain paralellism is clear, there is no rigorous definition. This paper develops two notions of granularity, each defined formally and represented by a single rational number. The two notions are compared and contrasted with each other and with previously proposed definitions of granularity.Supported, in part, by NSA OCREAE Grant MDA904-85-H-0002. Nqr experiments on Sc-Y alloys at very low temperatures

We have performed Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) experiments on an alloy of scandium and yttrium. We find that the characteristic resonance frequencies in zero external field are 50 percent larger than in pure scandium. This increase in frequency makes the Sc-Y alloy a better candidate for absolute thermometry below 500 µK. However, the spin-lattice relaxation time of this alloy is more than an order of magnitude longer than in the pure scandium. In addition, we have observed an abrupt increase in the Korringa constant for temperatures below 5mK.     

The seismic kernel system — a large-scale exercise in fortran 77 portability

The portability of software has become a major commercial issue in recent times. Such portability does not come easily, as few if any computer languages are really portable in practice. An additional complicating factor, especially in the commercial environment, is that the resulting software must be efficient. This paper describes the design and successful implementation of a 500,000+ line portable FORTRAN 77 package for the processing of seismic data. The package exhibits demonstrably high efficiency on a wide variety of machines from minicomputers to the largest supercomputers. Experiences gained during this exercise throw much light on the integration of the various thought processes which occur during the software engineering cycle, especially the notion of locality.
