Vegetation was added to a fully developed sandy point bar in the meander of a constructed stream. Significant changes in the flow structure and bed topography were observed. As expected, the addition of vegetative resistance decreased the depth-averaged streamwise velocity over the bar and increased it in the open region. In addition, the secondary circulation increased in strength but became confined to the deepest section of the channel. Over the point bar, the secondary flow was entirely outward, i.e., toward the outer bank. The changes in flow led to changes in bar shape. Although the region of the bar closest to the inner bank accumulated sediment, erosion of the bar and the removal of plants by scouring were observed at the interface between the planted bar and the open channel.  相似文献

In driving studies based on simulators and instrumented vehicles, specific models are needed to capture key aspects of driving data such as lateral control. We propose a model that uses weighted polynomial projections to predict each data point from the previous three time points, and accommodates the attempts of the drivers to re-center the vehicle before crossing the borders of the traffic lane. Our model also allows the possibility that average position within the lane may vary from driver to driver. We demonstrate how to fit the model using standard statistical procedures available in software packages such as SAS. We used a fixed-base driving simulator to obtain data from 67 drivers with Alzheimer's disease and 128 elderly drivers without dementia. Using these data, we estimated the subject-specific parameters of our model, and we compared the two groups with respect to these parameters. We found that the parameters based on our model were able to distinguish between the groups in an interpretable manner. Hence, this model may be a useful tool to define outcome measures for observational and interventional driving studies.  相似文献

A bathymetric, polarization lidar system transmitting at 532 nm and using a single photomultiplier tube is employed for applications of shallow water depth measurement. The technique exploits polarization attributes of the probed water body to isolate surface and floor returns, enabling constant fraction detection schemes to determine depth. The minimum resolvable water depth is no longer dictated by the system's laser or detector pulse width and can achieve better than 1 order of magnitude improvement over current water depth determination techniques. In laboratory tests, an Nd:YAG microchip laser coupled with polarization optics, a photomultiplier tube, a constant fraction discriminator, and a time-to-digital converter are used to target various water depths with an ice floor to simulate a glacial meltpond. Measurement of 1 cm water depths with an uncertainty of ±3 mm are demonstrated using the technique. This novel approach enables new approaches to designing laser bathymetry systems for shallow depth determination from remote platforms while not compromising deep water depth measurement.  相似文献

A fluorinated phenoxy boron subphthalocyanine (BsubPc) is shown to function as a fluorescent dopant emitter in small molecule organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Narrow electroluminescence (EL) emission with a full width at half-maximum of ~30 nm was observed regardless of the host used, indicating that this narrow EL is intrinsic to the BsubPc molecule. A bathochromic shift and the growth of a new EL peak at higher wavelengths with increasing doping concentration were found to be a result of molecular aggregation. Excitation of BsubPc by direct charge trapping as well as Fo?rster resonant energy transfer were shown using different host molecules. A maximum efficiency of 1.5 cd/A was achieved for a 4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP) host.  相似文献

Observers consciously prefer Mondrian's paintings in their original orientation compared with a rotated position—the “oblique effect” (Latto, Brain, & Kelly, 2000). However, this finding's premise, that all vertical–horizontal orientations of the thick black lines in Mondrian's oeuvre are preferred, overlooks the fact that the overall balance of these images is also altered when they are reoriented. Thus, balance may regulate the oblique effect, which might influence conscious aesthetic preferences. To address this issue, we explore Hess's (1965, 1972) claim that observers will unconsciously increase their pupil diameter to pleasing images and constrict it to unpleasant images. We overcame Hess's methodological limitation of not keeping his images' luminances and contrast constant across conditions by presenting eight Mondrian paintings (1921–1944) to 30 observers on a CRT for 20 s each in either their original or seven rotated positions. Simultaneously, we measured their pupil size while asking them to report how (dis)pleasing they found each image. We found both evidence for the oblique effect (where image rotation hampers preference) and a correlation between this consciously reported aesthetic preference and unconsciously derived pupil size. Considerable debate still exists in the char combustion community over the expected and observed reaction orders of carbon reacting with oxygen. In particular, very low values of the reaction order (approaching zero) are commonly observed in char combustion experiments. These observations appear to conflict with porous catalyst theory as first expressed by Thiele, which suggests that the apparent reaction order must be greater than 0.5. In this work, we propose that this conflict may be resolved by considering the decrease in char reactivity with burnout due to ash effects, thermal annealing, or other phenomena. Specifically, the influence of ash dilution of the available surface area on the apparent reaction order is explored. Equations describing the ash dilution effect are combined with a model for particle burnout based on single-film nth-order Arrhenius char combustion and yield an analytical expression for the effective reaction order. When this expression is applied for experimental conditions reflecting combustion of individual pulverized coal particles in an entrained flow reactor, the apparent reaction order is shown to be lower than the inherent char matrix reaction order, even for negligible extents of char conversion. As char conversion proceeds and approaches completion, the apparent reaction order drops precipitously past zero to negative values. Conversely, the inclusion of the ash dilution model has little effect on the char conversion profile or char particle temperature until significant burnout has occurred. Taken together, these results suggest that the common experimental observation of low apparent reaction orders during char combustion is a consequence of the lack of explicit modeling of the decrease in char reactivity with burnout.  相似文献

In the field of thermoacoustic energy conversion, the application of numerical analysis techniques, specifically computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, have gained ground in recent years. Previous efforts have focused on single thermoacoustic couples that were subjected to the thermoacoustic effect through an oscillatory boundary condition. CFD simulations of an entire thermoacoustic device are computationally expensive and few examples exist. The present work presents an extension of a simulation of a whole thermoacoustic engine that also includes a refrigeration stack. Through interaction of thermally generated sound waves, cooling of the working gas in this stack is demonstrated.  相似文献

Photocatalytic water splitting with separate H2 and O2 evolution is crucial because it eliminates the explosion potential and hydrogen-purification cost. A novel twin reactor was designed to separate the evolution of hydrogen and oxygen in photocatalytic water splitting under visible light. A modified Nafion membrane was employed to segregate the two photocatalysts in the twin reactor so that hydrogen and oxygen can be evolved separately. Conventional Z-scheme catalysts, Pt/SrTiO3:Rh and WO3, were used as hydrogen-photocatalyst and oxygen-photocatalyst, respectively. Fe2+ and Fe3+ were added in the reaction solution as electron-transfer mediator. The ratio of evolved H2 and O2 was in agreement with the stoichiometric ratio (2:1) of hydrogen and oxygen of water. An average hydrogen generation rate of 1.59 μmol/g-h was achieved in the twin-reactor system, which was twice as much as that in the conventional Z-scheme system. The improved H2 yield was due to the prevention of the water-splitting backward reaction in the twin reactor.  相似文献
