There exist tremendous needs for sustainable storage solutions for intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. Thus, systems based on Earth‐abundant elements deserve much attention. Potassium‐ion batteries represent a promising candidate because of the abundance of potassium resources. As for the choices of anodes, graphite exhibits encouraging potassium‐ion storage properties; however, it suffers limited rate capability and poor cycling stability. Here, nongraphitic carbons as K‐ion anodes with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the binder are systematically investigated. Compared to hard carbon and soft carbon, a hard–soft composite carbon with 20 wt% soft carbon distributed in the matrix phase of hard carbon microspheres exhibits highly amenable performance: high capacity, high rate capability, and very stable long‐term cycling. In contrast, pure hard carbon suffers limited rate capability, while the capacity of pure soft carbon fades more rapidly.  相似文献

Steering control for passenger cars on automated highways is analyzed. The feasibility of an automatic steering system based on absolute positioning global positioning system (GPS) and a magnetic marker guidance system has been evaluated using computer simulations. State estimation and control algorithm issues are examined for such a control system. By use of GPS and a magnetic marker sensor, an accurate and real-time estimation of the vehicle's lateral displacements with respect to the road can be accomplished. A steering control algorithm based on road curvature preview for achieving good road tracking and providing ride comfort is also presented. Liquid crystals (LCs) can serve as sensitive reporters of interfacial events, and this property has been used for sensing of synthetic or biological toxins. Here it is demonstrated that LCs can distinguish distinct molecular motifs and exhibit a specific response to beta‐sheet structures. That property is used to detect the formation of highly toxic protofibrils involved in neurodegenerative diseases, where it is crucial to develop methods that probe the early‐stage aggregation of amyloidogenic peptides in the vicinity of biological membranes. In the proposed method, the amyloid fibrils formed at the lipid–decorated LC interface can change the orientation of LCs and form elongated and branched structures that are amplified by the mesogenic medium; however, nonamyloidogenic peptides form ellipsoidal domains of tilted LCs. Moreover, a theoretical and computational analysis is used to reveal the underlying structure of the LC, thereby providing a detailed molecular‐level view of the interactions and mechanisms responsible for such motifs. The corresponding signatures can be detected at nanomolar concentrations of peptide by polarized light microscopy and much earlier than the ones that can be identified by fluorescence‐based techniques. As such, it offers the potential for early diagnoses of neurodegenerative diseases and for facile testing of inhibitors of amyloid formation.  相似文献

The efficiency of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics is sensitive to the morphology of the fullerene network that transports electrons through the device. This sensitivity makes it difficult to distinguish the contrasting roles of local electron mobility (how easily electrons can transfer between neighboring fullerene molecules) and macroscopic electron mobility (how well‐connected is the fullerene network on device length scales) in solar cell performance. In this work, a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, flash‐photolysis time‐resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) experiments, and space‐charge‐limit current (SCLC) mobility estimates are used to examine the roles of local and macroscopic electron mobility in conjugated polymer/fullerene BHJ photovoltaics. The local mobility of different pentaaryl fullerene derivatives (so‐called ‘shuttlecock’ molecules) is similar, so that differences in solar cell efficiency and SCLC mobilities result directly from the different propensities of these molecules to self‐assemble on macroscopic length scales. These experiments and calculations also demonstrate that the local mobility of phenyl‐C60 butyl methyl ester (PCBM) is an order of magnitude higher than that of other fullerene derivatives, explaining why PCBM has been the acceptor of choice for conjugated polymer BHJ devices even though it does not form an optimal macroscopic network. The DFT calculations indicate that PCBM's superior local mobility comes from the near‐spherical nature of its molecular orbitals, which allow strong electronic coupling between adjacent molecules. In combination, DFT and TRMC techniques provide a tool for screening new fullerene derivatives for good local mobility when designing new molecules that can improve on the macroscopic electron mobility offered by PCBM.  相似文献

We show that a bathtub shaped failure rate can be obtained from a mixture of two increasing failure rate (IFR) models. Specifically, we study the failure rate of the mixture of an exponential distribution, and a Weibull distribution with strictly increasing failure rate. Under some reasonable conditions, we show that, from a practical point of view, the mixture failure rate is bathtub. Similar results can be obtained from other mixtures.  相似文献

After parturition, the start of copious milk production in dairy cows requires the closure of tight junctions (TJ) to form the blood–milk barrier and prevent paracellular transfer of blood constituents into milk [e.g., lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and serum albumin (SA)] and vice versa [e.g., appearance of α-lactalbumin (α-LA) in blood]. Serotonin (5-HT) has been demonstrated to alter tight junction permeability in the mammary gland. The present study investigated individual differences of TJ permeability of mammary epithelium at the beginning of lactation in relation to circulating 5-HT in dairy cows. Blood and milk samples were obtained from 11 multiparous Holstein dairy cows for the first time at 4 h after parturition, at the following 5 milkings, and at the evening milkings on d 5, 8, 10, and 14 of lactation. Retrospectively, cows were split into 2 groups according to their calculated areas under the curve of serum 5-HT during the entire experimental period: a high-serum 5-HT (HSS) group (5 cows) and a low-serum 5-HT (LSS) group (6 cows). The areas under the curve of serum 5-HT concentrations over the 324-h experimental period were 62 ± 2 × 103 ng/mL in HSS and 25 ± 5 × 103 ng/mL in LSS. Plasma α-LA concentration was greater in LSS than in HSS cows at the first milking, but no difference between groups was found from the second to sixth milking. Yield of α-LA in milk was lower in HSS than in LSS during the first 6 milkings postpartum, especially in colostrum. Concentrations of α-LA, IgG1, and IgG2 in milk did not differ between groups during the entire experiment except for higher IgG observed in LSS than in HSS at the second milking and for higher IgG2 found in HSS compared with LSS on d 5. In contrast, SA concentrations and LDH activity in milk were lower in LSS compared with HSS cows during the first 6 milkings postpartum, particularly in colostrum. Milk somatic cell count was higher in HSS than in LSS throughout the study. Higher circulating 5-HT concentrations were associated with an increased transfer of the paracellularly transported SA, LDH, and somatic cell count, especially at the first milking, suggesting that 5-HT affects TJ permeability during closure of the blood–milk barrier at the onset of lactation. Furthermore, higher serum 5-HT concentrations were associated with a lower α-LA yield in milk. A consistent relationship with serum 5-HT concentrations was neither observed for the transfer of IgG2 nor the primarily transcellular transport of IgG1 during the first milkings after parturition.  相似文献

India ranks 66th of 88 countries in the Global Hunger Index and has a quarter of the world??s hungry. Food security status of 377 million inhabitants of India??s urban areas, of which one-fourth live in extreme poverty, is poorly documented. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) the extent of food insecurity among households in urban slums, (b) to quantitatively assess their subjective experiences related to food insecurity and (c) to identify sub-groups among the urban poor that are vulnerable to food insecurity. A cross-sectional, interviewer-administered survey of adult female respondents from 283 households, selected using two-stage cluster sampling, was conducted in slums across three municipal wards in the city of Mumbai. Food insecurity, as measured by the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), was found in a large number of households in the urban slums of Mumbai; 59.7?% (n?=?169) households were categorized as severely food-insecure, 16.6?% (n?=?47) as mildly to moderately food-insecure, and 23.7?% (n?=?67) as food-secure. Further analysis revealed that severe food insecurity was significantly associated with lower monthly household income and other socioeconomic status measures such as lower household monthly per capita income, lower rank in the standard of living index (SLI) and less monthly per capita expense on food items. Households where the woman was the primary income-earner and contributed the largest share to the monthly household income, and was older, less educated, with less media use or access were more likely to experience severe food insecurity. Although corrective steps at the household level such as livelihood security schemes and income generation programs are necessary, they will not be sufficient to eliminate this problem; state intervention is required in order to assure food security for the urban poor. The Government of India has drafted a Food Security Bill; but the criteria for determining which households are vulnerable and deserving are still being debated. The findings of this study highlight the urgency of corrective action and also provide pointers for the identification of vulnerable or priority sub-groups. Food security policies and programs have to be implemented immediately and effectively in order to ensure that subsidies and food items are allocated to the households of the vulnerable urban poor.  相似文献
