Optimum Design for RF-to-Optical Up-Converter in Coherent Optical OFDM Systems

In this letter, we conduct analysis on the optimum design for RF-to-optical up-converter in coherent optical OFDM systems using an optical I/Q modulator. We first derive closed-form expressions for the nonlinearity in the optical I/Q modulator, represented by two-tone intermodulation products as a function of the bias point and modulation index. Additionally, we perform a numerical simulation to identify Q-penalty and the excess modulation insertion loss under various transmitter conditions. We find that in contrast to the direct-detected system, the optimal modulator bias point for the coherent system is pi, where the Q-penalty and excess loss are minimized     

The Silicon Backplane Design for an LCOS Polarization-Insensitive Phase Hologram SLM

Polarization-insensitivity is achieved in a reflective spatial light modulator by laying a quarter-wave plate (QWP) at the incident wavelength directly over the mirror pixels of a silicon backplane, and forming a nematic Freedrickcz cell over the QWP to modulate the reflected phase. To achieve the highest drive voltage from the available silicon process, a switched voltage common front electrode design is described, with variable amplitude square wave drive to the pixels to maintain constant root-mean-square drive and minimize phase fluctuations during the dc balance refresh cycle. The silicon has been fabricated and liquid-crystal-on-silicon cells both with and without the QWP assembled; applications include optically transparent switches for optical networks, beam steering for add-drop multiplexers for wavelength-division-multiplexing telecommunications, television multicast, and holographic projection.     

Normality and impairment following profound early institutional deprivation: A longitudinal follow-up into early adolescence.

Longitudinal analyses on normal versus impaired functioning across 7 domains were conducted in children who had experienced profound institutional deprivation up to the age of 42 months and were adopted from Romania into U.K. families. Comparisons were made with noninstitutionalized children adopted from Romania and with nondeprived within-U.K. adoptees placed before the age of 6 months. Specifically, the validity of the assessment, the degree of continuity and change in levels of functioning from 6 to 11 years, and the factors in the pre- and postadoption environment accounting for heterogeneity in outcome were examined. Pervasive impairment was significantly raised in children experiencing institutional deprivation for ≥6 months of life, with a minority within this group showing no impairment. There was no additional significant effect of duration of deprivation beyond the 6-month cutoff, and few other predictors explained outcome. The pattern of normality/impairment was mainly established by 6 years of age, with considerable continuity at the individual level between 6 and 11 years. The negated conditional: A litmus test for the suppositional conditional?

Under the suppositional account of conditionals, when people think about a conditional assertion, "if p then q," they engage in a mental simulation in which they imagine p holds and evaluate the probability that q holds under this supposition. One implication of this account is that belief in a conditional equates to conditional probability [P(q/p)]. In this paper, the authors examine a further implication of this analysis with respect to the wide-scope negation of conditional assertions, "it is not the case that if p then q." Under the suppositional account, nothing categorically follows from the negation of a conditional, other than a second conditional, "if p then not-q." In contrast, according to the mental model theory, a negated conditional is consistent only with the determinate state of affairs, p and not-q. In 4 experiments, the authors compare the contrasting predictions that arise from each of these accounts. Structure of very early protein folding intermediates: new insights through a variant of hydrogen exchange labelling

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen exchange labelling has been a key method in characterizing the structure of transient folding intermediates. In studies of several proteins, however, there has been clear spectroscopic evidence for partial folding of some kind at very early times, before any protection from exchange was measurable. These results, presumably a consequence of limited stability of specific backbone interactions, have made it difficult to assess the extent of native-like folding in the very early intermediates. We have used a variant of the labelling method to investigate marginally stable structures formed within the first few milliseconds of refolding of two such proteins, hen lysozyme and ubiquitin. RESULTS: In lysozyme, population of a subset of native-like secondary structures on this timescale is revealed, thus reconciling the exchange behaviour with circular dichroism measurements and confirming the significance of the rapidly formed embryonic structure as a foundation for the subsequent folding pathway. In the case of ubiquitin, by contrast, no significantly protective structure was detectable, suggesting that here secondary structural elements can be populated only marginally ahead of the major cooperative folding event; this was also supported by stopped-flow circular dichroism measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The hydrogen exchange approach can be extended to probe the formation of native-like structure formed in very early folding intermediates, even when the stability of specific interactions is marginal. In the case of lysozyme, this has provided a new window on an early stage of organization of the alpha-helical domain.     

Microsatellite instability in follicle centre cell lymphoma

Fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to assay 12 microsatellite markers (APC x 2, DCC, P53 x 2, RB1, NM23, WT1, D6S260, D6S262, D6S281 and TNFa) to look for evidence of microsatellite instability in 40 cases of follicle centre cell lymphoma (FCC). Evidence of novel alleles seen in the tumour tissue but not the normal uninvolved tissue was seen in seven cases (17%). In only two of these cases (5%) was more than one locus involved but in these cases multiple affected loci were seen (4/12 and 7/12 respectively). The detection of microsatellite instability indicates a DNA repair defect such as that which would be predicted to occur in cells with mutated mismatch repair genes, a novel finding in FCC lymphoma.     

Models for the elastic deformation of honeycombs

A theoretical model has been developed for predicting the elastic constants of honeycombs based on the deformation of the honeycomb cells by flexure, stretching and hinging. This is an extension of earlier work based on flexure alone. The model has been used to derive expressions for the tensile moduli, shear moduli and Poisson's ratios. Examples are given of structures with a negative Poisson's ratio. It is shown how the properties can be tailored by varying the relative magnitudes of the force constants for the different deformation mechanisms. Off-axis elastic constants are also calculated and it is shown how the moduli and Poisson's ratios vary with applied loading direction. Depending on the geometry of the honeycomb the properties may be isotropie (for regular hexagons) or extremely anisotropic. Again, the degree of anisotropy is also affected by the relative magnitude of the force constants for the three deformation mechanisms.     

The geometry effects for stress intensity factor of sandwich specimen for measuring interfacial fracture toughness

The interfacial stress intensity factors for three types of sandwich specimens: the single edge crack tensile specimen, the three point bend specimen and the four point shear specimen were obtained by the finite element analysis and compared with the asymptotic solutions. The results show that the geometric effect for mode II specimen is larger than mode I specimen. The limit curves for geometry factor equal to 1.05 were obtained to indicate the usable range of validity of the asymptotic solution.     

Effect of pentobarbital on normal brain protection and on the response of 9L rat brain tumor to radiation therapy

The authors attempted to confirm published reports that pentobarbital protects against radiation-induced damage to normal rat brain, as well as enhances radiotherapeutic efficacy in a rat brain tumor model. They evaluated animal survival in 9L gliosarcoma-burdened rats that received whole-brain radiation therapy (16, 24, 32, or 40 Gy) while under intraperitoneal pentobarbital (60 mg/kg) or intramuscular ketamine (60 mg/kg) sedation. The animals were examined at autopsy to attribute death to either intracranial tumor growth or normal brain toxicity in the absence of discernible tumor. There was no difference between the two anesthesia groups regarding the survival of unirradiated animals. Radiation therapy produced a significant dose-dependent prolongation in animal survival, which was limited by the development of normal tissue toxicity at the higher doses. When compared to ketamine anesthesia, pentobarbital anesthesia appeared to offer some protection (not statistically significant) against early (but not late) toxicity at selected radiation doses. A reduction in the number of deaths from tissue toxicity suggested an increased antitumor effect, but again this was not statistically significant. Only in one case was there even a marginal significant difference (p = 0.045) between overall therapeutic efficacy in rats sedated with pentobarbital versus ketamine. While there may be a radioprotective effect of pentobarbital in rat brains without intracranial tumor, there is no conclusive evidence for either radioprotection or significant improvement of radiotherapeutic efficacy in this 9L rat brain tumor model.     

Low-delay distortion recursive (IIR) transmultiplexer

A new scheme based on using an IIR design algorithm is presented to demultiplex critically sampled QPSK channels for onboard processing (OBP) satellites. Comparisons with an existing nonrecursive (FIR) transmultiplexer (TMUX) show that the presented IIR TMUX is also a suitable candidate for consideration in future OBP applications
