Start-up activities,individual characteristics,and the regional milieu: Lessons for entrepreneurship support policies from German micro data

This paper contributes to empirical research on the role of regional policy for entrepreneurship by focusing on the link between two stylized facts that emerged from a number of studies for Germany and other countries: Entry rates differ between regions, and the propensity to become an entrepreneur is influenced by socio-demographic variables and attitudes. We develop a theoretical framework to discuss this link, and we test whether for a person of a given age, degree of schooling, attitude towards risk etc. regional variables and, therefore, regional policies, do matter for the decision to start a new business ceteris paribus. Our econometric study is based on data for 10.000 persons from a recent representative survey of the population in ten German planning regions, the Regional Entrepreneurship Monitor (REM). We use a version of the probit model that takes care of the regional stratification of the data, and the results of the nonlinear models are carefully interpreted and illustrated. We find that the propensity to step into self-employment is, among others, higher for males, unemployed, people with contacts to a role model, and with past entrepreneurial experience, who live in more densely populated and faster growing regions with higher rates of new firm formation, while risk aversion and high prices of land have the opposite impact. Interestingly, it does not matter whether the region has a left or right government. A phenomenological model for the dynamic response of wind turbines to turbulent wind

To predict the average power output of a wind turbine, a response model is proposed which takes into account: (i) the delayed response to the longitudinal wind speed fluctuations; (ii) a response function of the turbine with arbitrary frequency dependence; (iii) wind fields of arbitrary turbulence intensity. In the limit of low turbulence intensity, the dynamical ansatz as proposed in 1992 by Rosen and Sheinman is reproduced. It is shown, how the response function of the turbine can be obtained from simulation experiments of a specific wind turbine. For two idealized situations the dynamic effect of fluctuating wind is estimated at turbulence intensities 0?I_u?0.5. At the special mean wind speed , the turbine response function is determined from simulation data published by Sheinman and Rosen in 1992 and 1994.     

(R)-acetoin-female sex pheromone of the summer chafer Amphimallon solstitiale (L.)

Extracts of Amphimallon solstitiale (L.), a well known, widely distributed and rather common European scarab beetle, were analyzed by GC-MS and GC-EAD. Acetoin -(R):(S) < 9:1 - as well as 2,3-butanediol -(2R,3R):(2S,3S) :meso = 1:1:9 - were present in extracts of both males and females. Although (2S,3S)-butanediol did not show any EAD activity, the other compounds elicited strong responses exclusively with male antennae. In contrast, several EAD active green leaf volatiles were detected equally well by male and female antennae. During preliminary field bioassays, (R)-acetoin was highly attractive to swarming males, whereas neither rac-acetoin nor the 2,3-butanediols showed activity. Therefore, (R)-acetoin is the female sex pheromone of A. solstitiale.     

Artificial star test by real-time video holography for the adjustment of high-numerical-aperture micro-objectives

The star test is a useful tool for fast visual inspection of the aberrations of micro-objectives during final adjustment. One of its most valuable properties is that it permits instantaneous observation of the effect of adjustments of lens groups, for instance, the shifting element during on-axis coma adjustment. Sometimes, however, it is difficult to perform the star test, e.g., in the ultraviolet region, which represents a field of growing interest driven by applications in semiconductor inspection and metrology. In addition, it is difficult to display the point-spread functions with video cameras because of the high dynamic range needed. We present a simple work-around with which to overcome these problems. If an interferometer is available for quantitative wave-front analysis on the production line, the point-spread function may quite easily be computed from an interferogram of the wave front in the back focal plane of a micro-objective. We describe the achievement and application of such a simulated star test in various spectral regions, together with some of its useful applications, including real-time wave-front manipulation.     

Antireflection-coated blue GaN laser diodes in an external cavity and Doppler-free indium absorption spectroscopy

Commercially available GaN-based laser diodes were antireflection coated in our laboratory and operated in an external cavity in a Littrow configuration. A total tuning range of typically 4 nm and an optical output power of up to 30 mW were observed after optimization of the external cavity. The linewidth was measured with a beterodyne technique, and 0.8 MHz at a sweep time of 50 ms was obtained. The mode-hop-free tuning range was more than 50 GHz. We demonstrated the performance of the laser by detecting the saturated absorption spectrum of atomic indium at 410 nm, allowing observation of well-resolved Lamb dips.

Fabrication of Silicon Inverse Woodpile Photonic Crystals

Silicon inverse woodpile photonic crystals are fabricated for the first time. Our approach, which is based on direct laser writing of polymeric templates and a novel silicon single‐inversion procedure, leads to high‐quality structures with gap/midgap ratios of 14.2 %, centered at a wavelength of 2.5 μm. It is shown that gap/midgap ratios as large as 20.5 %, centered at 1.55 μm, may become possible in the future.     

Mumford-Shah model for one-to-one edge matching.

This paper presents a new algorithm based on the Mumford-Shah model for simultaneously detecting the edge features of two images and jointly estimating a consistent set of transformations to match them. Compared to the current asymmetric methods in the literature, this fully symmetric method allows one to determine one-to-one correspondences between the edge features of two images. The entire variational model is realized in a multiscale framework of the finite element approximation. The optimization process is guided by an estimation minimization-type algorithm and an adaptive generalized gradient flow to guarantee a fast and smooth relaxation. The algorithm is tested on T1 and T2 magnetic resonance image data to study the parameter setting. We also present promising results of four applications of the proposed algorithm: interobject monomodal registration, retinal image registration, matching digital photographs of neurosurgery with its volume data, and motion estimation for frame interpolation.
