Central nervous system (CNS) disease is a major feature of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection of macaques. To define the spectrum of CNS lesions in SIV-infected macaques and the potential associations with viral strain and disease course, we performed a retrospective analysis of necropsies on 124 macaques with SIV-induced AIDS. Histologic evidence of CNS disease was observed in 71 (57.3%) of the 124 animals. SIV encephalitis was the most common CNS lesion occurring in 43.7% (31/71) of the animals with CNS disease and 25% of all animals. The incidence of SIVE correlated significantly with shortened survival (P=0.0207). In addition, SIVE was seen in 42.9% (15/35) of rapid progressors (animals that died within 200 days) compared to only 18% (16/89) of normal progressors (animals that lived longer than 200 days) (P=0.011). Animals with SIVE had higher viral loads in peripheral blood than those that did not, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. Similarly, while animals infected with uncloned SIVmac251 had a higher incidence of SIVE (27.5%; 14/51) than animals infected with molecularly cloned SIVmac239 and its T-cell tropic derivatives (18.5%; 10/54) this difference was not statistically significant. In this study rapid disease progression and SIVE were highly correlated making separation of viral determinants of virulence from those of neurovirulence difficult. 相似文献

A series of novel conjugated polymers containing alternating electron-donating and electron-accepting units based on 9,9-dioctylfluorene, 4,7-dithienyl-2-yl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, and (oligo)thiophene were synthesized. The polymers were synthesized by the Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization of 9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diboronic acid and 4,7-di(2-bromothien-5-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole with dibromo(oligo)thiophene (thiophene, bithiophene, and terthiophene). Optical properties of the copolymers were highly dependent on the length of the (oligo)thiophene unit. With the incorporation of three thiophene units in the polymer backbone, the copolymer absorption covers a broad range of the visible spectrum from 300 to 700 nm. The band gap energies derived from the absorption edge of the thin film spectra were in the range of 1.83-1.94 eV. The photovoltaic performance increases as the length of the (oligo)thiophene segments in the polymer backbone increases. The best performance of photovoltaic device was obtained by PFTBzTTT as the electron donor material with PCE of 1.25% under an AM 1.5 solar simulator. 相似文献

Mass spectrometry-based high-throughput screening methods combine the advantages of photometric or fluorometric assays and analytical chromatography, as they are reasonably fast (throughput ≥1 sample/min) and broadly applicable, with no need for labelled substrates or products. However, the established MS-based screening approaches require specialised and expensive hardware, which limits their broad use throughout the research community. We show that a more common instrumental platform, a single-quadrupole HPLC-MS, can be used to rapidly analyse diverse biotransformations by flow-injection mass spectrometry (FIA-MS), that is, by automated infusion of samples to the ESI-MS detector without prior chromatographic separation. Common organic buffers can be employed as internal standard for quantification, and the method provides readily validated activity and selectivity information with an analytical run time of one minute per sample. We report four application examples that cover a broad range of analyte structures and concentrations (0.1–50 mM before dilution) and diverse biocatalyst preparations (crude cell lysates and whole microbial cells). Our results establish FIA-MS as a versatile and reliable alternative to more traditional methods for screening enzymatic reactions. 相似文献

In this microwave study, the defect chemistry of ceria–zirconia solid solutions (CZO, Ce1−yZryO2−δ) was investigated at high temperatures by a resonant microwave method. Specifically, the effects of temperature and Zr content on the dielectric properties and defect chemistry mechanisms in CZO were analyzed. Experiments were performed on a series of different CZO powders (y = 0.2, 0.33, 0.50, 0.67). Measurements at 600°C and different oxygen partial pressures (pO2 = 10−26–0.2 bar) confirm a dominant n-type conduction of small-polarons in CZO due to the preferred formation of oxygen vacancies, which is also supported by a multimodal analysis. Polarization losses were found to be negligible in the GHz range. Furthermore, an increased relative permittivity was observed in CZO, which correlates with the concentration of oxygen vacancies in CZO. Our microwave study is the first to provide a comprehensive data set for the dielectric properties of CZO powder sample in a wide range of different conditions. In addition, the connection of dielectric properties to CZO defect chemistry mechanisms is presented. The results are in good agreement with findings in the literature and may contribute to a better understanding of microwave-based state diagnosis of CZO-based materials, as it discussed for three-way catalysts. 相似文献

Low agricultural productivity caused by soil degradation is a serious problem in the Ethiopian Highlands. Here, we report how differences in soil fertility management between farming systems, based either on enset (Ensete ventricosum) or on teff (Eragrostis tef) as the major crops, affect the extent of nutrient stocks, balances and ecosystem sustainability. We collected information on farmers’ resources and nutrient management practices from stratified randomly selected households in two watersheds in the Central Highlands of Ethiopia. In addition, we collected soil samples from each land use and calculated nutrient stocks, partial and full nutrient balances (N, P and K) for one cropping season. Our results show that farmers in the two farming systems manage their soils differently and that nutrient inputs were positively related to farmers’ wealth status. The watershed with the enset-based system had higher soil N and K stocks than the watershed with the teff-based system, while P stocks were not different. Management related N?and K fluxes were more negative in the teff-based system (?28 kg N ha?1 yr?1 and ?34 kg K ha?1 yr?1) than in the enset-based system (?6 kg N ha?1 yr?1 and ?14 kg K ha?1 yr?1) while P fluxes were almost neutral or slightly positive. Within the enset-based system, a strong redistribution of N, P and K took place from the meadows and cereals (negative balance) to enset (positive balances). Although in the teff-based system, N, P and K were redistributed from meadows, small cereals and pulses to maize, the latter still showed a negative nutrient balance. In contrast to nutrient balances at land use level, nutrient balances at the watershed scale masked contrasting areas within the system where nutrient oversupply and deficiencies occurred. 相似文献

The Newark Bay Complex includes the Newark Bay, tidal portions of the Hackensack River, Passaic River, Arthur Kill, and Kill van Kull. It is a highly industrialized urban area including five counties and more than 20 local governments with a large racially-mixed population of more than 3 million people. In 1982, research conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) showed elevated levels of chemical contaminants in five species of fish and one type of crab in the Newark Bay Complex. Subsequently, the State of New Jersey adopted advisories to guide citizens on safe consumption practices for fish and crabs. Since then, fish consumption advisories have been issued primarily through the Fish and Game Digest, a publication distributed by the state to licensed anglers. However, anglers in the Complex are not required to have a fishing license because the waters are marine. Therefore, most anglers in this area do not receive advisory information. To gain greater insight into the information sources and risk perceptions of urban anglers, a survey was conducted of 300 anglers at 26 fishing and crabbing locations in the Newark Bay Complex during the summer and early fall of 1995. The objectives of the study were to learn anglers': (1) knowledge of fish consumption advisories; (2) belief in the advisories; (3) perception of how safe fish are to eat; (4) sources for information about fish and fishing; and (5) sources for information on fish consumption advisories. The study concluded that while 60% had heard about advisories, they either did not believe or were unconcerned about health effects from eating contaminated species. In addition, the most used source for information about fish and fishing was other fishermen, while newspapers were selected as a source for information about community news, health, and food safety. 相似文献

Amaranth seed (Amaranthus hypochondriacus cv. K432) was processed to obtain oil, reported to be a promising source of squalene. The amaranth seed was ground using
a stone mill, then separated into oil-rich embryonic tissue (or “bran”) and starchy perisperm. Amaranth bran was much more
stable than rice bran when free fatty acid (FFA) content and peroxide value were monitored. Milling at a gap of 0.755 mm did
not result in excessive damage to the starch in the perisperm fraction and yielded a bran fraction that contained more than
three-fourths of the oil and a starchy fraction consisting of more than two-thirds of the seed weight. The bran particles
were too fine for effective bench-scale extraction of the oil. Consequently the bran was extruded into collects prior to extraction.
Two extrusion settings were evaluated regarding the rate of moisture injection, while the bran feed rates were constant. There
was no significant difference in appearance or size between the two dried collets. Collets were extracted with hexane using
an Armfield Extraction/Desolventizing Unit (Model FT 29, Armfield, Ltd., Hampshire, England). Oil recovery averaged 97.7 and
80.0%, respectively. Oil was extracted at high yield from the bran when the bran was extruded into collets. Oil can be obtained
as a coproduct of amaranth starch by milling and separating the fractions of amaranth seed. Milling, extrusion, and extraction
did not decrease significantly the squalene content in amaranth oil, but increased FFA content and peroxide value and changed

Nanoscale transistors employing an individual semiconducting carbon nanotube as the channel hold great potential for logic circuits with large integration densities that can be manufactured on glass or plastic substrates. Carbon nanotubes are usually produced as a mixture of semiconducting and metallic nanotubes. Since only semiconducting nanotubes yield transistors, the metallic nanotubes are typically not utilized. However, integrated circuits often require not only transistors, but also resistive load devices. Here we show that many of the metallic carbon nanotubes that are deposited on the substrate along with the semiconducting nanotubes can be conveniently utilized as load resistors with favorable characteristics for the design of integrated circuits. We also demonstrate the fabrication of arrays of transistors and resistors, each based on an individual semiconducting or metallic carbon nanotube, and their integration on glass substrates into logic circuits with switching frequencies of up to 500 kHz using a custom-designed metal interconnect layer. 相似文献
