Proposed Design of a CFRP Flange-to-Flange Connection for Precast Prestressed Double Tee Systems

The current methods of connecting the flanges of precast double tee members, and their respective short comings in specific situations, are described. A new carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) flange-to-flange connection is proposed to eliminate the problems associated with repair requirements for the current connections. Design expressions for the currently used mechanical anchorage and the proposed CFRP connection are presented. A comparative calculation for the two systems is given.     

An Optimized Content-Aware Authentication Scheme for Streaming JPEG-2000 Images Over Lossy Networks

This paper proposes an optimized content-aware authentication scheme for JPEG-2000 streams over lossy networks, where a received packet is consumed only when it is both decodable and authenticated. In a JPEG-2000 codestream, some packets are more important than others in terms of coding dependency and image quality. This naturally motivates allocating more redundant authentication information for the more important packets in order to maximize their probability of authentication and thereby minimize the distortion at the receiver. Towards this goal, with the awareness of its corresponding image content, we formulate an optimization framework to compute an authentication graph to maximize the expected media quality at the receiver, given specific authentication overhead and knowledge of network loss rate. System analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves our design goal in that the rate-distortion (R-D) curve of the authenticated image is very close to the R-D curve when no authentication is required     

Complementary Justice: Effects of "Poor but Happy" and "Poor but Honest" Stereotype Exemplars on System Justification and Implicit Activation of the Justice Motive.

It was hypothesized that exposure to complementary representations of the poor as happier and more honest than the rich would lead to increased support for the status quo. In Study 1, exposure to "poor but happy" and "rich but miserable" stereotype exemplars led people to score higher on a general measure of system justification, compared with people who were exposed to noncomplementary exemplars. Study 2 replicated this effect with "poor but honest" and "rich but dishonest" complementary stereotypes. In Studies 3 and 4, exposure to noncomplementary stereotype exemplars implicitly activated justice concerns, as indicated by faster reaction times to justice-related than neutral words in a lexical decision task. Evidence also suggested that the Protestant work ethic may moderate the effects of stereotype exposure on explicit system justification (but not implicit activation). A new FMS architecture based upon networked DSP servo technology

This paper presents a critical evaluation of existing FMS architectures and the academic and industrial design and development strategies used during their formulation. The paper seeks to address the need for, and value of, existing architectures within the industrial arena. More importantly however, this paper puts forward a new two-tier distributed control architecture for FMS based upon new (real-time) networkable DSP servo control methodologies developed by one of the authors for Softronics in Australia. The ramifications of these methodologies are substantial, not only in terms of FMS control, but in the overall simplification of such systems and the development of flexible fixturing devices over the coming decade. This paper also postulates on how new FMS architectures can be developed from such technologies and details why such architectures could be more appropriate to industry needs than those that are currently in existence.     

Concordant but different: Cognitive function, cerebral anatomy, and metabolism in monozygotic twins with Alzheimer's disease.

To illustrate the utility of the twin method in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research, a pair of monozygotic twins, concordant for the disease but markedly different in their clinical presentations, was studied in detail. Neuropsychological evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cerebral glucose metabolic studies revealed a typical behavioral presentation for AD in Twin A. In contrast, Twin B showed prominent visuospatial impairments. Although there was no identified cause for the disparate presentations, a close correspondence was observed between the neuropsychological findings and the regional brain measures. The results suggest that the trajectory of AD may vary widely even in genetically identical individuals. A theory of marital dissolution and stability.

Research is presented on the prospective longitudinal prediction of marital dissolution. First, a cascade toward marital dissolution is described. Second, the cascade is predicted with variables from a balance theory of marriage. Third, there are process and perception (the distance and isolation cascades) cascades related to the cascade toward dissolution. The importance of "flooding" is discussed, as well as a mechanism through which negative perceptions (which are 2-dimensional) become global and stable and through which the entire history of the marriage is recast negatively. The role of physiology is outlined. A theory is presented in which a "core triad of balance" is formulated in terms of 3 weakly related thermostats (connected by catastrophe theory) and related to the distance and isolation cascade. Myths, misconceptions, and missed opportunity: Single-case designs and counseling psychology.

The status of single-case designs in counseling psychology is reviewed. Also, reasons for the underuse of these designs by counseling psychologists are discussed. Finally, potential contributions (1) in research linking process and outcome, (2) in group counseling, (3) across a variety of theoretical approaches, and (4) to evaluation and quality assurance in clinical practice are described.
