Revisiting neighbourhood change from a Canadian perspective: Some supporting evidence from Vancouver
This paper argues that the several models of neighbourhood change developed in the United States are generally not applicable to Canadian cities due to differences in urban form, socioeconomic characteristics, and a host of institutional factors. A simple model is presented which extends the arbitrage model of neighbourhood dynamics. Several hypotheses are advanced and then tested on a data base covering three Vancouver, B.C. neighbourhoods from 1955 to 1981 by estimating several hedonic price equations. The hypotheses receive partial support. Hypothalamic regulatory peptides bind to specific receptors on target cells in the pituitary and control secretion. They in turn can be regulated at the pituitary level by steroid and peptide modulators. Affinity cytochemical techniques are important tools for the identification of specific target binding sites for these regulatory peptides. This presentation reviews the work in which potent, biotinylated ligands of gonadotropin releasing hormone (bio-GnRH), corticotropin releasing hormone (bio-CRH), and arginine vasopressin (bio-AVP) were applied to study the target cell responses. Bio-GnRH, bio-CRH, and bio-AVP bind to membrane receptors on specific anterior pituitary cells. Dual labeling for either gonadotropin or adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) antigens further identified the target cells. After 1–3 minutes, the label was in patches or capped on the surface. After 3 minutes, it was internalized in small vesicles and sent to receptosomes and vacuoles in the Golgi complex. Eventually the biotinylated peptides, or a metabolite, was found in the lysosomes (multivesicular bodies) and a subpopulation of secretory granules. The route and rate of uptake was similar to that described for the classical receptor-mediated endocytosis process. In contrast, intermediate lobe corticotropes internalized the bio-CRH in less than 1 minute. The route through the Golgi complex appeared to be bypassed. Instead the labeled peptide was in vesicles, on the membranes of scattered vacuoles, and in multivesicular bodies. Modulation of ligand binding by steroids showed that changes in receptor numbers correlated with changes in the number of cells that bound the ligand. In male rats, dihydrotestosterone reduced the percentage of GnRH-bound cells by 50%. Most of the reduction appeared in cells that stored luteinizing hormone (LH) antigens. In diestrous female rats, estradiol increased the percentage of bio-GnRH-bound cells. However, the steroid decreased the percentage of GnRH-bound cells in cells from proestrous rats. Glucocorticoids decreased the percentage of CRH-bound corticotropes in as little as 10 minutes. Potentiation of secretion by these ligands was correlated with increases in the percentage of ligand-bound cells. AVP pretreatment of corticotropes increased the percentage of cells that bound bio-CRH. It also increased the rate of receptor-mediated endocytosis of CRH and changed the route so that the Golgi complex was bypassed. This effect could be mimicked by activation of its second messengers (calcium and protein kinase C). Similarly, CRH pretreatment increased the percentage of corticotropes that bound AVP. Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) pretreatment also increased the percentage of thyrotropes that bound AVP. Finally, calcium or sodium channel blockers altered CRH binding so that fewer cells were labeled. This binding by CRH was not dependent on extracellular calcium and tests with a calcium channel agonist showed that it was related to activation of calcium channels. To summarize, these affinity cytochemical studies have identified specific target cells in the pituitary for GnRH, CRH, and AVP. They have also identified heterogeneity in the population. They have demonstrated new information about the direct modulatory effects of steroids, ion channels, and neuropeptides on neuropeptide binding by subpopulations of these target cells. 相似文献

This article reports on research undertaken with members of a Melbourne urban community garden to explore the extent to which such a natural amenity provides opportunities for enhancing social capital. It is apparent even from this small qualitative study that membership of ‘Dig In’ community garden offers many benefits to its members. These benefits include increased social cohesion (the sharing of values enabling identification of common aims and the sharing of codes of behaviour governing relationships), social support (having people to turn to in times of crisis) and social connections (the development of social bonds and networks). However, the study indicates that, at least in the early stages of development, such benefits do not necessarily extend beyond the garden setting. This raises a question about the time required to develop high levels of social capital, and points to the need for further research into ‘time’ and ‘space’ aspects of community gardens. 相似文献

While contemporary urban theories suggest that individuals have transcended their geographical community, evidence suggests that urban residents still feel ‘attached’ to place. In the literature, several socio-demographic characteristics are associated with place attachment. Scholars suggest physical features, such as community ‘greenspace’, may also influence place attachment. Yet research does not consider the relationship between one's objective proximity to greenspace or the objective availability of community greenspace on residents' place attachment. This study employs multi-level models and draws on police incident data, census data, two spatial data sets and survey data from over 4000 residents living across 148 state suburbs in Australia to assess the relationship between greenspace proximity and greenspace availability on place attachment. Our findings indicate that greater proportions and more accessible greenspace may not improve residents' attachment to their local community. 相似文献

The HIV/AIDS pandemic poses a substantial long‐term threat to economic development in South Africa. A questionnaire survey explored the perceptions of a sample of construction firms in the Western Cape regarding HIV/AIDS policy and treatment programmes. The findings show that there is no universal view about the long‐term threat of HIV/AIDS. Most organizations have awareness policies in place but prevention and treatment policies are less common. Treatment programmes are the least implemented of all intervention services due to insufficient resource capacity, the potential stigmatization of infected persons, and low take‐up rates. Despite an acknowledgement of the benefits flowing from mounting treatment programmes, doubt exists as to their financial viability. 相似文献

The phenomenon of expressing cultural identity in architecture is apparent in many parts of the world: this paper examines it in the context of Kuwait. It focuses on architects, and the strategies they use in expressing cultural identity. The aim is to understand their views and current efforts in this context. In Kuwait, architecture has passed through dramatic transformations during the second half of the twentieth century that were the result of economic, regional and global changes. A survey of the views of eighteen Kuwaiti architects was conducted using focused interviews and a standardised questionnaire. Examples of their projects were analysed to illustrate their views and ways of thinking. The study concluded that there were several strategies employed by Kuwaiti architects to express a Kuwaiti cultural identity in their work. A three- dimensional matrix was developed to illustrate the relationship between the ranges of these strategies and architecture in Kuwait. It is hoped that this matrix will be useful for practitioners and critics of contemporary architecture in Kuwait interested in understanding current trends in achieving a cultural identity in architecture. 相似文献

A favorable microenvironment for biofilm growth on GAC particles was shown using green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker for a phenol degrading bacterium, Pseudomonas putida F1. The dispersion of P. putida F1 in a biofilm covering granulated activated carbon (GAC) particles was monitored and compared to a biofilm on non-activated granular carbon particles. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) micrographs of the biofilms taken from two fluidized bed reactors operating under identical conditions, showed higher fluorescent green areas in the GAC biofilm, especially close to the GAC surface. Quantitative analysis of the biofilm by COMSTAT, a three-dimensional biofilm structure analysis program, showed higher biomass concentration and higher viability in the GAC covered biofilm vs. the non-activated carbon biofilm. In addition, better effluent quality was measured for the BGAC reactor, which strongly suggests a significantly larger biofilm surface area available to the substrate, as opposed to that of the non-activated carbon carrier reactor. 相似文献

An ultrahigh shear rate viscometer (USV) was used to measure the viscosity of polymer solutions. It was found that some polymer solutions in base oil, including those used as engine oil viscosity modifiers, show permanent viscosity loss when subjected to very high shear rates above 106 s?1. The USV was modified to automatically carry out a series of viscosity measurements on the same test lubricant sample. This enabled the accumulation of permanent viscosity loss to be measured over successive strain cycles. As expected, permanent viscosity loss increased with both strain rate and molecular weight. When carried out at 5 × 106 s?1 and 100°C, the test was more severe than the Kurt Orbahn test because samples of lubricants subjected to the latter underwent further shear thinning in the USV. The USV test appears to be a rapid and convenient way to quantify the permanent viscosity loss of polymer-containing lubricants for engine use, and a protocol to assess permanent viscosity loss (PVL) and permanent shear stability index (PSSI) based on viscosity measurements at 106 s?1 before and after shear thinning is outlined. The study also shows that it is important to take into account possible permanent viscosity loss when measuring the viscosity of polymer solutions in very high shear rate viscometers such as the USV. This can be done by minimizing the amount of shear to which the lubricant is subjected or by taking successive measurements and subtracting the permanent viscosity loss taking place in each of the first few strain rate cycles. 相似文献

This paper presents a study on energy deposition and electromagnetic compatibility of match-type electroexplosive devices (EEDs), which recently have found more usage in pulsed power environments with high electromagnetic interference (EMI) background. The sensitivity of these devices makes them dangerous to intended and unintended radiation produced by devices commonly used in pulsed power environments. Match-type EEDs have been found to be susceptible to such low levels of energy (7-8 mJ) that safe operation of these EEDs is vital when in use near devices that produce high levels of pulsed EMI. The scope of this paper is to provide an investigation that incorporates results of similar studies to provide detonation characteristics of these EEDs. The three topics included in this study are sensitivity testing, modeling of the thermodynamic heat propagation, and electromagnetic compatibility from pulsed electromagnetic radiation. The thermodynamic joule heating of the primary explosive has been modeled by a solution to the 1D heat equation. A simple pulsed generator, Marx generator with an inductive load, was used for the electromagnetic compatibility assessment of the coupled field between the pulse generator and shorted EED. The results of the electromagnetic compatibility assessment relate the resistive, inductive, and capacitive components of the pulse generator to the area of the shorted EED. 相似文献
