This paper presents chlorophyll-a estimation in coastal waters off the Gulf of Finland using remote optosensors. Concurrent remote optosensor data and in situ measurements of water quality were obtained in the study area. Significant correlations were observed between digital values and chlorophyll-a measurements. The results as a case study show that the estimated accuracy of chlorophyll-a retrieval using neural networks is higher than the accuracy of chlorophyll-a estimation using regression analyzes in the area. The study also shows one example why remote optosensors are critical to monitor water quality in coastal areas such as the Gulf of Finland.  相似文献

One of the key issues in in-service inspection qualification is the representativeness of the defects used in qualification specimens. The best representativeness is achieved with realistic defects. However, present specimen production techniques have some significant weaknesses, such as unrealistic defects or additional alterations induced in the surrounding material. Specimens manufactured, for example, by weld implantation or with weld solidification defects always result in one or more extra weld interfaces. These interfaces can be detected by NDT. To overcome problems with the current specimens, a new defect manufacturing technique was developed. The new technique produces natural, representative defects without introducing additional weld metal or other unwanted alterations to the specimen.The new method enables artificial production of single, separate fatigue cracks by thermal loading. The method is based on a natural thermal fatigue damage mechanism and enables production of real cracks directly into the samples. Cracks are produced without welding or machining and without any preliminary surface treatment or artificial initiator such as a notch or a precrack. Single crack or a network of cracks can be induced into the base material, welded areas, HAZ, weld claddings, threaded areas, T-joints, etc. The location, orientation and size of produced cracks can be accurately controlled. Produced cracks can be used to simulate different types of service-induced cracks such as thermal fatigue, mechanical fatigue and stress corrosion cracks. It is shown that artificially produced thermal fatigue cracks correspond well with the real, service-induced cracks and overcome the problems of traditional qualification specimen manufacturing techniques.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out on the AIBN-initiated polymerization of styrene at 60°C. The kinetic rate constants were determined by the method of moments and the MWD method, which was proposed in a previous paper. The results compared favorably with the data in the literature and the MWD method was noted to yield more consistent results than the method of moments, which indicates the importance of considering the whole molecular weight distribution. The theoretical MWD was found to approximate the experimental MWD well. The chain-transfer constant to AIBN was found to be between 0.09 and 0.14.  相似文献

We consider the load balancing problem in large wireless multi-hop networks by applying the continuum approximation. The task is to find routes, geometric curves, such that the maximal traffic load in the network is minimized. In finite fixed networks, multi-path routes generally yield a lower congestion and thus allow higher throughput. In contrast, we show that in dense wireless multi-hop networks, the optimal load balancing can be achieved by a destination based single-path routing referred to as field-line routing. This is because any routing can be transformed to the corresponding field-line routing with the same or better performance, by using as paths, the field lines of the so-called destination flow associated with the original routing. The concepts are illustrated with two examples. In the case of a unit disk with unit traffic, the maximal load of 0.389 of a multi-path routing system is reduced to 0.343 by using the field-line routing. Similar improvements are also demonstrated for the unit square.  相似文献

The animation environment Jeliot automates visualization of algorithms over the Internet. The user can visualize algorithms of his own, not merely the selection supplied by a service provider. Jeliot is based on self-animating data types: the user selects the data objects of the source code to be visualized, and Jeliot produces the animation based on operations performed on those types. We present the design of Jeliot and the principles of its implementation. In addition, we discuss the educational applications of Jeliot.  相似文献

Nutrient concentrations have increased in the Archipelago Sea during recent years. This is probably caused by growth in the loads from agriculture, air, fish farming and the Baltic proper. The Archipelago Sea acts like a nutrient filter between the Baltic proper and the Bothnian Sea; part of some of the externally input nutrients are retained within this area. Previously only rough estimates of the amount of the background load have been given. In this study the amount of net nutrient inflow from the Baltic proper was estimated with the aid of a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the years 1993–1997. Our model suggests that the role of background nutrient load from the Baltic proper may sometimes be decisive in the eutrophication process. For example, in June 1993 the background load of phosphorus was 300 000 kg in one month, i.e. about threefold compared to the total phosphorus load from fish farming during this whole year. Nutrient inflow varies a lot during open water seasons and therefore more detailed studies are highly recommended. If all other local loading sources were included in the dynamic nutrient balance model we could calculate actual nutrient concentrations at any given time in the Archipelago Sea.  相似文献

The first part of this article reports the analytical form of the Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) kernel functions. In this latter part, the numerical quality of ELPI response matrices is studied and an example of an inversion algorithm is given. The ELPI assemblies with and without an electrical filter stage and with smooth or sintered impaction plates are studied and compared with basic impactor kernels and the kernels for the calculation of the aerosol mass distribution. It is shown that the ELPI assembly with the electrical filter stage and smooth impaction plates should be the best choice for the inversion of data if no bounce occurs. The comparison to a mass impactor shows that the devices are on par in data inversion. The inversion ELPI data is studied with a Bayesian algorithm assuming a bimodal lognormal size distribution of the aerosol. The algorithm includes a novel procedure for obtaining an initial guess of the distribution parameters. To our knowledge, it is also the first algorithm to use ELPI current readings as its input. Simulations and diesel emission measurements show that the proposed algorithm is a useful tool in the study of ELPI data.  相似文献

The phase state of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) has an impact on its lifetime, composition, and its interaction with water. To better understand the effect of phase state of SOA on climate interactions, we studied the SOA phase state and the effect of its history and report here the phase state and the humidity-induced phase hysteresis of multicomponent-seeded SOA particles produced in a large, continuously stirred tank reactor. We determined the phase state of the particles by their bounced fraction impacting on a smooth substrate in a low-pressure impactor. The particles were composed of ammonium sulfate ([NH4]2SO4) seed and a secondary organic matter (SOM) shell formed from oxidized α-pinene or isoprene. The ammonium sulfate (AS) seed dominated the deliquescence of the α-pinene SOM multicomponent particles, whereas their efflorescence was strongly attenuated by the SOM coating. Particles coated with isoprene SOM showed continuous phase transitions with a lesser effect by the AS seed. The results agree with and independently corroborate contemporary research.

The first wetting layer on solid nanoparticles has direct implications on the roles these particles play in industrial processes and technological applications as well as in the atmosphere. We present a technique for online measurements of the adsorption of the first few water layers onto insoluble aerosol nanoparticles. Atomized fumed silica nanoparticles were dispersed from aqueous suspension and their hygroscopic growth factors (HGF) and number of the adsorbed water layers at subsaturated conditions were measured using a nanometer hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA). Particle morphology was characterized by electron microscopy and particle density was determined by mobility analysis. The HGFs of the size-selected particles at mobility diameters from 10 to 50 nm at 90% relative humidity (RH) varied from 1.05 to 1.24, corresponding to 2–6 layers of adsorbed water. The morphology of the generated fumed silica nanoparticles varied from spheres at 8–10 nm to agglomerates at larger diameters with effective density from 1.7 to 0.8 g/cm3 and fractal dimension of 2.6. The smallest spheres and agglomerates had the highest HGFs. The smallest particles with diameters of 8 and 10 nm adsorbed two to three water layers in subsaturated conditions, which agreed well with the Frenkel, Halsey, and Hill (FHH) isotherm fitting. In comparison to the small spheres or large agglomerates, the compact agglomerate structure containing a few primary particles increased the number of adsorbed water layers by a factor of ~1.5. This was probably caused by the capillary effect on the small cavities between the primary particles in the agglomerate.  相似文献
