Airborne particulate matter (PM) is an important environmental issue because of its association with acute respiratory distress in humans, although the specific particle characteristics that cause lung damage have yet to be identified. Particle size, acid aerosols, water-soluble transition metals (e.g. Cu, Fe, V, Ni and Zn), polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and particle composition are the focus of several popular hypotheses addressing respiratory distress. All of the above mentioned characteristics are contained in PM generated from the combustion of both pulverized coal, and biomass, including dried municipal sewage sludge (MSS). In this investigation, we report results from collaborative interdisciplinary research on the inhalation health risks caused by particles emitted from the co-combustion of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and coal. A solid particle resuspension system was implemented to resuspend ash particles. Mice were exposed to resuspended coal and MSS/coal ash particles. Mice exposed to MSS/coal ash particulate demonstrated significant increases in lung permeability, a marker of the early stages of pathological lung injury, while the mice exposed to coal-only ash did not. These results show that the composition of particles actually inhaled is important in determining lung damage. Zinc was significantly more concentrated in the MSS/coal ash than coal ash particles and the pH of these particles did not differ significantly. Specifically, an MSS/coal mixture, when burned, emits particles that may cause significantly more lung damage than coal alone, and that consequently, the use of MSS as a 'green', CO2-neutral replacement fuel should be carefully considered.  相似文献

We present a new technique, based on pulse-echo ultrasound, for monitoring the entire setting process of injectable bone cement. This research has been motivated by the lack of satisfying standards. The main problem with existing standards is the subjectivity, which leads to poor reproducibility. Because of this the results are not comparable between different research groups. A strong advantage with the proposed technique is that if low-intensity ultrasound is used, it provides a non-destructive analysis method. Once the cement paste has been applied to the measurement cell, no manipulation is needed throughout the entire setting process. The problem of the ultrasound affecting the setting of certain cement materials has been investigated, and solutions are discussed. The propagation of ultrasound is temperature-dependent, and therefore a technique for automatic compensation for temperature variations is discussed briefly. The testing was performed on -calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH) and mixtures of CSH and -tricalcium phosphate (-TCP). The results show that the acoustic properties of the cement are strongly correlated with the setting time, the density, and the adiabatic bulk modulus. The measured initial and final setting times agree well with the Gillmore needles standard. An important difference compared to the standards, is that the technique presented here allows the user to follow the entire setting process on-line.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to study whether exercise training induces changes in the lipid profile of rat aorta and nervous system and in the in vitro intrinsic responsiveness of these tissues to endothelin-1 (ET-1) treatment. The exercise program performed successfully produced the characteristic metabolic alterations of the trained state. Exercise training induced a large and significant increase in the levels of both aortic ethanolamine plasmalogens (PlasEtn) and glucosylceramides. In contrast, a decrease of aortic ceramide and cholesterol levels was evoked by exercise training. ET-1 increased PlasEtn content only in sedentary animals. An exercise-induced increase in cerebellum levels of ceramides and ceramide monohexosides was found. The cerebellum ceramide content was increased by FT-1 more noticeably in sedentary rats than in trained animals. In contrast, cerebral cortex was observed to be largely insensitive to both exercise training and ET-1 treatment. It was concluded that exercise training (i) induces changes in both vascular and cerebellar lipid profiles, the former being much more pronounced than the latter, and (ii) diminishes the aortic and cerebellar sensitivity to ET-1 action.  相似文献

The authors tested a patient suffering from a circumscribed lesion of the right frontal operculum (FO) in 3 experiments of visual attention involving spatial orienting, maintenance of task-relevant priorities, and control of interference from new and old task-irrelevant items. The authors found that spatial orienting and active maintenance of priorities were intact, but there were difficulties in controlling interference from new and old irrelevant items. These results suggest that the FO is necessary for the direct control of interference, but its lesion alone is not enough to disturb spatial orienting processes or active maintenance of task priorities. The last years have witnessed a dramatic growth in the number as well as in the variety of distributed virtual environment systems. These systems allow multiple users, working on different client computers that are interconnected through different networks, to interact in a shared virtual world. One of the key issues in the design of scalable and cost-effective DVE systems is the partitioning problem. This problem consists of efficiently assigning the existing clients to the servers in the system and some techniques have been already proposed for solving it. This paper experimentally analyzes the correlation of the quality function proposed in the literature for solving the partitioning problem with the performance of DVE systems. Since the results show an absence of correlation, we also propose the experimental characterization of DVE systems. The results show that the reason for that absence of correlation is the nonlinear behavior of DVE systems with regard to the number of clients in the system. DVE systems reach saturation when any of the servers reaches 100 percent of CPU utilization. The system performance greatly decreases if this limit is exceeded in any server. Also, as a direct application of these results, we present a partitioning method that is targeted to keep all the servers in the system below a certain threshold value of CPU utilization, regardless of the amount of network traffic. Evaluation results show that the proposed partitioning method can improve DVE system performance, regardless of both the movement pattern of clients and the initial distribution of clients in the virtual world.  相似文献

In this paper, a preliminary analysis of the impact of high wind power penetration in the planning and operation of the Spanish power system is presented. The problems studied in the paper are those related to the stability of the power system. This key subject could be deeply influenced by the installation of up to 15000 MW of wind power generation as it has been planned for the next six years. The analysis presented here is based on the results of dynamic simulations. Dynamic models of the induction generator (squirrel cage and doubly fed) and models of the wind farms have been developed to make possible the simulations. From the simulation results some conclusions and recommendations have been extracted, which would contribute to the appropriate integration of the new wind generation foreseen for the Spanish power system.  相似文献

In experiment 1, 21 male Holstein calves (43.9 kg) were fed only milk replacer at 1.4% of their body weight as dry matter for 6 wk. Dietary treatments included a commercial milk replacer (22% protein, 15% fat) containing (dry basis) either 6.4% Ca propionate or 6.4% dextrose (control) and either 0 or 0.5 mg/kg of supplemental Cr as Cr propionate. Neither Cr nor Ca propionate affected body weight gain; however, Ca propionate tended to increase the growth of the entire foregut measured after slaughter at 6 wk of age. A Minimal Model glucose tolerance test indicated that insulin sensitivity was not affected by treatment. However, calves fed Cr had higher glucose disappearance indexes than controls when propionate was not fed (0.013 vs. 0.019 units) but similar clearance when propionate was included (0.018 vs. 0.018 units, Cr x P interaction). The area under the glucose response curves after propionate-loading tests was much greater for calves fed the Cr versus control replacer when propionate was not present; however, when propionate was included, the response was less dramatic. In experiment 2, 25 Holstein calves were used to study performance and metabolic responses when milk replacer, and then postweaning starter, were supplemented with 0.5 mg/kg of Cr as Cr propionate. The metabolic responses of these calves were not affected by treatment. Overall, combined data suggested that supplemental Cr may improve glucose effectiveness; however, these responses seemed to be attenuated by supplemental propionate.  相似文献

Solid solution formation between the ferroelectric hexagonal compound YMnO3 and the semiconducting perovskite compound CaMnO3 has been studied in the Y-rich region of the pseudobinary system. The materials were prepared by reaction of the corresponding oxides and the calcium carbonate for obtaining the corresponding phases and subsequent sintering of the pressed powders in the 1400–1525 °C-temperature range. Their ceramic characteristics were established. Samples with relative density >98% Dth were obtained. The hexagonal symmetry of the pure yttrium manganite changes to an orthorhombic one, isostructural with that of the GdMnO3 compound, for 32 mol % CaMnO3. The incorporation of the Ca cation causes an increasing in the compactness of the lattice cell, promoting a rise in the apparent density, despite of the smaller atomic weight of the Ca cation against that of the Y one, until the transition to the orthorhombic lattice occurs. Subsequent increase in the Ca amount lead to a decrease in the theoretical density.The electrical conductivity of the solid solutions increases strongly from 100 to the 90/10 Y/Ca composition, and more moderately for higher Ca amounts. Conductivity values as high as 10–2 S · cm–1 were measured on the denser samples. The activation energy for conduction suffers a corresponding decrease when the Ca amount is increased.  相似文献

The in vitro effects of endothelin-1 on cerebral veins were studied using cylindrical segments, 5 mm long, from dog pial veins. Isometric responses to endothelin-1 (10(-12)-10(-7) M) and to the endothelin ET(B) receptor agonist, IRL 1620 (Suc-[Glu9,Ala11,15]endothelin-1-(8-21), 10(-12) -10(-7) M), were recorded in veins under control conditions and pretreated with the endothelin ET(A) receptor antagonist, BQ-123 (cyclo-(D-Asp-Pro-D-Val-Leu-D-Trp), 10(-8) -10(-5) M), and the endothelin ETB receptor antagonist, BQ-788 (N-[N-[N-[(2,6-dimethyl-1-piperidinyl)carbonyl]-4-methyl-L-leucyl]-1-(me thoxycarbonyl)-D-tryptophyl]-D-norleucine monosodium, 10(-6) and 10(-5) M). The response to endothelin-1 was also recorded in veins pretreated with the nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10(-4) M), or the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, meclofenamate (10(-5) M), and in veins without endothelium or placed in medium without Ca2+ but with EDTA (0.1 mM). In control veins, endothelin-1 produced a concentration-dependent contraction (EC50 = 2.0 x 10(-10) M; maximal contraction = 113 +/- 6 mg) and IRL 1620 induced no effects or a small contraction only with high concentrations (10(-8) - 10(-6) M) (EC50 = 1.5 x 10 (-8) M; maximal contraction = 9 +/- 3 mg). BQ-123 shifted the response to endothelin-1 to the right in a parallel, concentration-dependent way, whereas BQ-788, L-NAME or meclofenamate did not modify the response to endothelin-1. Compared with the control, veins in a medium without Ca2+ had similar EC50 values, but a lower maximal contraction induced by endothelin-1 (57 +/- 10 mg, P < 0.05), and veins without endothelium exhibited similar EC50 values. Thus, endothelin-1 produces marked cerebral venoconstriction that could be mainly mediated by activation of endothelin ETA receptors, may be dependent on extracellular Ca2+, and may be independent of endothelium, nitric oxide and prostanoids.  相似文献
