We report on the initial and later stages of apatite formation from simulated body fluid on titania with different surface morphologies (compact or nanotubular) and different crystal structures (anatase or amorphous). The nanotubular layers were fabricated by electrochemical anodization in fluoride-containing electrolytes. The study investigates the enhanced apatite deposition on titania nanotubes. In the initial stages of apatite growth, more nuclei are formed on the nanotubular surface than on flat compact TiO2. While the crystallographic structure of the substrate plays a less important role than the morphology in the initial nucleation stages, it is of great importance in the later stages of apatite crystal growth. The nanotubular morphology combined with an anatase structure leads to the formation of apatite layers with a thickness of >6 nm in less than 2 days. No stable apatite layers can be observed on amorphous TiO2 films, neither on compact nor on nanotubular substrates.XPS, FT-IR and XRD measurements reveal that carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) of low crystallinity is formed on annealed nanotubular and compact titania.Electrochemically grown and annealed TiO2 nanotube arrays having anatase structure are expected to be a good precursor system for the formation of CHA and thus for the preparation of osseointegrative implants.  相似文献

Current energy and GHG emissions policies either focus directly on emissions or promote renewable production and the implementation of specific efficiency measures. Meanwhile, the fundamental structure of the energy market based on profits through energy throughput remains largely unchallenged. This policy oversight prevents the transition to an energy economy in which profits are based on energy services delivered at the lowest energy cost: a performance-based energy economy (PBEE). The PBEE applies the combined concepts of the performance economy and energy services to the energy sector. Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) are discussed as an example of PBEE practices. The implications for energy suppliers and consumers as well as the conditions for PBEE diffusion and consequences for technological change are also explored. The expected environmental, social and economic benefits are described. However, absolute consumption and emissions reductions may prove elusive due to the rebound effect. In order to forestall rebound-led increases, complementary policy measures likely to lead to absolute reductions are required.  相似文献

Recent models assume that some symptoms of schizophrenia originate from defective reward processing mechanisms. Understanding the precise nature of reward-based learning impairments might thus make an important contribution to the understanding of schizophrenia and the development of treatment strategies. The present study investigated several features of probabilistic reward-based stimulus association learning, namely the acquisition of initial contingencies, reversal learning, generalization abilities, and the effects of reward magnitude. Compared to healthy controls, individuals with schizophrenia exhibited attenuated overall performance during acquisition, whereas learning rates across blocks were similar to the rates of controls. On the group level, persons with schizophrenia were, however, unable to learn the reversal of the initial reward contingencies. Exploratory analysis of only the subgroup of individuals with schizophrenia who showed significant learning during acquisition yielded deficits in reversal learning with low reward magnitudes only. There was further evidence of a mild generalization impairment of the persons with schizophrenia in an acquired equivalence task. In summary, although there was evidence of intact basic processing of reward magnitudes, individuals with schizophrenia were impaired at using this feedback for the adaptive guidance of behavior. The development of abradeable gas turbine seals for higher temperature duties has been the target of an EU‐funded R&D project, ADSEALS, with the aim of moving towards seals that can withstand surface temperatures as high as ~ 1100°C for periods of at least 24,000 h. The ADSEALS project has investigated the manufacturing and performance of a number of alternative materials for the traditional honeycomb seal design and novel alternative designs. This paper reports results from two series of exposure tests carried out to evaluate the oxidation performance of the seal structures in combustion gases and under thermal cycling conditions. These investigations formed one part of the evaluation of seal materials that has been carried out within the ADSEALS project. The first series of three tests, carried out for screening purposes, exposed candidate abradeable seal materials to a simulated natural gas combustion environment at temperatures within the range 1050–1150°C in controlled atmosphere furnaces for periods of up to ~ 2,500 h with fifteen thermal cycles. The samples were thermally cycled to room temperature on a weekly basis to enable the progress of the degradation to be monitored by mass change and visual observation, as well as allowing samples to be exchanged at planned intervals. The honeycombs were manufactured from PM2000 and Haynes 214. The backing plates for the seal constructions were manufactured from Haynes 214. Some seals contained fillers or had been surface treated (e.g. aluminised). The second series of three tests were carried out in a natural gas fired ribbon furnace facility that allowed up to sixty samples of candidate seal structures (including honeycombs, hollow sphere structures and porous ceramics manufactured from an extended range of materials including Aluchrom YHf, PM2Hf, Haynes 230, IN738LC and MarM247) to be exposed simultaneously to a stream of hot combustion gas. In this case the samples were cooled on their rear faces to produce a temperature gradient through the seals and the samples were thermally cycled by switching the natural gas off every three hours. The total exposure period for each test was ~ 1,000 h, with seal face temperatures of 1000–1180°C. The performance of the materials in these tests was evaluated using visual observations and cross‐sectional examinations using optical and SEM/EDX techniques. The data gathered have included measurements of oxide thickness and metal‐loss on the exposed samples. A wide range of materials performances has been observed in these studies from minimal damage through to total destruction of samples. Overall, this study has shown that there is still a lot of development work required in order to move to higher temperature sealing systems structures in gas turbine applications.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception and the attitudes towards probiotic foods of the population in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four hundred and twenty (100.0%) people were interviewed in small-, medium- and large-sized supermarkets located in various parts of the city of Rio de Janeiro. One hundred and twenty-two (29.05%) people defined probiotic foods correctly. Ninety-one (21.67%) were unable to mention a single example of a probiotic food. The results of this study indicate the need for an elementary easy-to-understand educational programme using accessible language in order to fix the concepts related to these products.  相似文献

Adding conductive carbon fillers to insulating thermoplastic resins increases composite electrical conductivity. Often, as much of a single type of carbon filler is added to achieve the desired conductivity and still allow the material to be molded into a bipolar plate for a fuel cell. In this study, various amounts of three different carbons (carbon black, synthetic graphite particles, and carbon nanotubes) were added to polypropylene resin. The resulting single‐filler composites were tested for electrical resistivity (1/electrical conductivity). The effects of single fillers and combinations of the different carbon fillers were studied via a factorial design. The percolation threshold was 1.4 vol % for the composites containing only carbon black, 2.1 vol % for those containing only carbon nanotubes, and 13 vol % for those containing only synthetic graphite particles. The factorial results indicate that the composites containing only single fillers (synthetic graphite followed closely by carbon nanotubes and then carbon black) caused a statistically significant decrease in composite electrical resistivity. All of the composites containing combinations of different fillers had a statistically significant effect that increased the electrical resistivity. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) technique combined with principal component analysis of spectra-to-image datasets was employed to study the effects of atomization air pressure used during the coating process on film–tablet interfacial thickness. Placebo tablet cores were prepared and coated with Eudragit® RL 30 D. Atomization air pressure was varied from 10 to 20 psi, whereas all other processing parameters were held constant. Higher air pressures generally produced thinner interfaces, although the interfacial region was not uniform across the tablet surface and was dependent on the sampling location. These results demonstrate the suitability of this XPS technique to study the coating–tablet interface. Moreover, the variability in the interfacial thickness illustrates the need to further study such systems.  相似文献
