Air pollution has been recognised as one of the major risk factors for the global burden of disease. In modern society the majority of the exposure occurs indoors where people spend most of their time. Indoor air quality may be improved with portable air cleaners utilizing various cleaning techniques, such as filtration, electrostatic precipitation, and ionization. The objective of this study was to quantify air cleaner particle removal by particle size resolved clean air delivery rates (CADR). This was obtained by utilizing particle concentration measurements and indoor aerosol modeling. Our test protocol was applied to five air cleaners designed for household and office use. For particles with diameters above 100 nm and at the chosen settings, the CADR was around 40 m3/h for an ion generator, around 70 m3/h for an electrostatic precipitator, and ranging from 100 to almost 300 m3/h for the three filter-based air cleaners. Similar performances were obtained for ultrafine particles, except for the ion generator that performed better in this size range.

Nordic air quality co-benefits from European post-2012 climate policies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Although climate policies target primarily CO2, they may indirectly have an impact on air pollutants and thus on air quality. Here we look specifically at the co-benefits of various European post-2012 climate policy scenarios related to air quality in the Nordic region. We analyse how caps on emissions, expansion of the European Union (EU) Emissions Trading System, carbon taxes, and Russian and non-EU Eastern Europe participation after 2012 will influence emissions, air quality, avoided abatement costs, welfare effects, the regional environment and human exposure to particulate matter in the Nordic countries. We find that stricter targets will contribute to reduced emissions of air pollutants, and benefits to ecosystems and human health, which would have required substantial abatement costs if achieved by application of ‘end-of-pipe’ measures. Due to the assumed use of the flexibility mechanisms, reductions in emissions in the Nordic countries are smaller than in other regions, but the Nordic countries benefit from reductions in emissions in nearby regions. The more sectors that are included in the emissions trading scheme, the greater the emission of air pollutants. If Eastern Europe and Russia were to abandon participation in a climate agreement, the EU and Norway would have to undertake more emission cuts at home in order to meet the same targets. This would benefit ecosystems in southern Scandinavia, but acidification would increase in the north because of increased emissions in Russia.  相似文献

Based on potential health benefits, there is a need to develop effective strategies for enhancing milk fat concentrations of cis-9 18:1, 18:3 n-3 and conjugated linoleic (CLA) content in milk without compromising the sensory or storage characteristics of processed milk or dairy products. Sixteen Finnish Ayrshire dairy cows were used in a cyclic change-over experiment with four 21-d experimental periods and a 4 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of forage conservation method, concentrate level and supplements of propylene glycol (PG), and their interactions on milk fatty acid composition and vitamin content. Experimental treatments consisted of four conserved forages offered ad libitum, supplemented with two levels of a standard concentrate (7 or 10 kg/d) and PG (0 and 210 g/d) fed as three equal meals. Primary growths of timothy and meadow fescue sward were conserved by ensiling with none (NA), an inoculant enzyme preparation (IE) or a formic acid based (FORM) additive or as hay 1 week later. Conservation of grass by drying rather than ensiling resulted in lower forage 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3, total fatty acid and fat-soluble vitamin concentrations. In spite of lower intakes, milk fat 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 content was higher (P < 0.05) for hay than for silage diets (12.1, 9.6, 9.6 and 9.3 and 5.00, 3.51, 4.27 and 2.93 g/kg total fatty acids, for hay, NA, IE and FORM silages, respectively). Forage conservation method had no clear effects on milk trans 18:1 or CLA content. Compared with silage, hay diets resulted in milk containing lower (P < 0.001) riboflavin, alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene concentrations, but had no effect on ascorbic acid, thiamine, pyridoxine or retinol content. Feeding more concentrates had no effect on milk fatty acid composition or milk vitamin content, other than lowering (P < 0.001) 16:0 concentrations from 348 to 338 g/kg fatty acids. Supplements of PG led to small (P < 0.05) increases in milk 13:0 anteiso and 15:0 content from 1.06 and 11.3 to 1.22 and 12.6 g/kg fatty acids and reduced (P < 0.05) the concentrations of ascorbic acid (16.1 v. 15.1 g/kg milk).  相似文献

The present study describes salivary cotinine levels and their relationship to cigarettes smoked per day in Mexican smokers. Using a sampling strategy based on the number of cigarettes per day, we recruited 1,222 smokers from Mexico City and the state of Morelos in Mexico during 1999. Smoking behaviors and other factors known to affect nicotine intake and cotinine level were identified in an interview using a standardized questionnaire. Salivary cotinine was measured by capillary gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection. We used generalized additive models to describe the relationship between salivary cotinine levels and variables of interest. The mean age of the population was 39.7 years (SD=15.6 years), with a mean cotinine level of 194.7 ng/ml (SD=134.8; range=10.1-767). Participants smoked a mean of 15.5 cigarettes per day (SD=11.3). Salivary cotinine and cigarettes smoked per day were positively related, although the association was not linear, flattening above 20 cigarettes per day. After adjusting for cigarettes per day, we found that significant predictors of cotinine levels included age, body mass index, cigarette producer, and smoking behavior variables. These results may have implications for dosing with nicotine medications to aid smoking cessation in Mexican smokers and suggest that whether the cigarette is labeled light or regular has no relationship to nicotine dose from smoking cigarettes.  相似文献

A small and low-cost antenna solution for radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is presented. The impedance of the antenna is designed to match directly to the impedance of the RFID microchip. Also, the impedance of the antenna is immune to the platform. Thus, the antenna is applicable in many different environments. The design and measurement results are reported and discussed.  相似文献

Immune responses are best initiated in the environment of lymphoid tissues wherein circulating lymphocytes enter by interacting with endothelial adhesion molecules. In type 1 diabetes, immune responses against pancreatic islets develop, but the environment in which this occurs remains unidentified. To determine whether lymphocyte homing to lymphoid organs is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice, we blocked the function of the mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1), which is a vascular addressin-mediating lymphocyte homing into mucosal lymphoid tissues, in these mice. While ineffective if started later, a blockade started at 3 wk of age reduced the incidence of diabetes from 50% to 9% (p < 0.01). This finding is associated with Peyer's patch atrophy, a marked decrease of naive (CD44(low) CD45RB(high)) T lymphocytes, and a reduction in the relative numbers of memory (CD44(high)) T lymphocytes in the spleen. The potential of these spleen cells to cause diabetes was diminished. Anti-MAdCAM-1 treatment also inhibited both lymphocyte entry into the pancreas and diabetes development in NOD/SCID recipients after the transfer of lymphocytes derived from the mesenteric lymph nodes of young, but not of diabetic, NOD donors. Therefore, MAdCAM-1 may be required during two distinct steps in an early phase of diabetes development: for the entry of naive lymphocytes into the lymphoid tissues in which diabetes-causing lymphocytes are originally primed, and for the subsequent homing of these lymphocytes into the pancreas. The role of MAdCAM-1 as a mucosal vascular addressin suggests that mucosal lymphoid tissues are involved in the initiation of pathologic immune responses in NOD mice.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There are few data about angiographic determinants of functional graft patency and native artery disease progression after coronary artery bypass grafting operation with arterial grafts compared with venous grafts. METHODS: Baseline and follow-up coronary angiograms at a mean of 2 years after operation in 91 patients with 194 arterial and 204 venous graft anastomoses were analyzed. RESULTS: Ninety-two percent of the arterial and 87% of the venous graft anastomoses were patent at follow-up angiography (p = 0.05, odds ratio = 2.63). Unlike that of arterial grafts, the patency rate of venous graft anastomoses correlated negatively with decreasing severity of the bypassed lesion. In contrast to venous grafts, in which angiographic graft function was basically dichotomous (fully patent or occluded), compromised flow of the arterial graft anastomoses was registered in 12%. Progression of the disease was more common in segments bypassed with venous grafts than with arterial grafts (p = 0.001, odds ratio = 2.03). CONCLUSIONS: Angiographic determinants of functional graft patency and progression of occlusive changes in the bypassed artery segments are different for arterial and venous grafts.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of using confocal scanning laser tomography in the analysis of macular topography in patients with subfoveal choroidal neovascularization associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to analyze quantitatively the changes in topography after local strontium-plaque radiation therapy. DESIGN: Prospective case series. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 16 eyes with subfoveal choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM) treated with strontium-90 (90Sr)-plaque radiation therapy and 16 fellow eyes of 16 patients were examined. INTERVENTION: Confocal scanning laser analysis of macular surface topography before and after irradiation of the macula was performed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parameters describing the height and volume of the retinal elevation in the macula were measured. RESULTS: The maximum height of the macular lesion at baseline was 0.25 mm (standard deviation [SD], 0.12 mm) in eyes showing regression of the CNVM during follow-up and 0.34 mm (SD, 0.19 mm) in eyes showing continued growth of the CNVM. During follow-up, a mean decrease in the maximum height of the macular lesion ranging from 0.03 to 0.10 mm occurred in eyes with regression of the CNVM, whereas the mean maximum height increased by 0.07 to 0.15 mm during follow-up visits in eyes with continued growth of the CNVM. All parameters describing the mean height and volume of the lesion also decreased significantly in patients showing angiographic regression, whereas they increased or remained unchanged in patients with continuous growth of the CNVM despite irradiation. The corresponding parameters also were higher in fellow eyes with untreated CNVM than in eyes without exudative AMD. CONCLUSIONS: Confocal scanning laser tomography can be used to monitor the amount of the change in neurosensory detachment in AMD. The parameters obtained by confocal scanning laser tomography correlate with CNVM perfusion after 90Sr-plaque radiation therapy. This technology is a useful tool for objective evaluation of morphologic change after institution of new therapeutic methods for the treatment of AMD.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of air humidification and temperature on thermal comfort in sedentary office work. A blinded twelve-period cross-over trial was carried out in two similar wings of an office building, contrasting 28–39% steam humidification with no humidification, corresponding to 12–28% relative humidity. The length of each period was one working week. The study population was 169 workers who judged their thermal sensations in a weekly questionnaire. The percentage of dissatisfied was lowest when the air temperature was 22 °C. At 22 °C an increase in relative humidity raised the mean thermal sensation only slightly. At 20 °C when the air was humidified there were fewer workers who judged their air temperature as being too low. On the other hand, at 24 °C humidification increased the percentage of workers who judged their air temperature to be too high. The percentage of dissatisfied increased rapidly when the air temperature was outside of its optimum value, 22 °C. The percentage of workers complaining about draft increased when the air temperature was lower than 22 °C. Thus we consider that the temperature range from 20 to 24 °C during wintertime may be too wide without individual temperature control from the point vzew of thermal comfort. We recommend that the air temperature should be kept between 21 and 23 °C if no individual control is available. The best solution would be individual temperature control permitting adjustment of the temperature at 22 ± 2 °C.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of symptoms and the perception of poor indoor air quality among the occupants of houses and apartments with different ventilation systems. The study population consisted of the 473 occupants of 242 dwellings in the Helsinki metropolitan area who responded to a self-administered questionnaire (response rate 93.1%) after a two-week period of indoor air quality measurements. The symptoms of interest were those often related to poor indoor air quality including dryness or itching of the skin; dryness, irritation or itching of the eyes; nasal congestion (“blocked nose”) nasal dry-ness; nasal discharge (“runny nose”); sneezing; cough; breathlessness; headache or migraine; and lethargy, weakness or nausea. Perception of coldness; warm-ness; draught; dryness; stuffiness; and sufficiency of air exchange was also requested. The age-standardized period prevalences of the symptoms and complaints were systematically more common among the occupants of the apartments than those of the houses. The occupants of the houses with natural ventilation seemed to have more symptoms and complaints than those with balanced ventilation. However, in the apartments with balanced ventilation the occupants reported, in general, more symptoms and complaints than those with natural ventilation.  相似文献
