Sodium montmorillonite (MMT) was modified with several organic phosphonium salts. Organoclays with water soluble surfactants were prepared by the traditional cation exchange reaction. An alternative procedure was used to prepare organoclays with water insoluble salts. The effect of chemical composition and molecular weight of the salts on the thermal stability and basal spacing were evaluated. The phosphonium montmorillonites exhibit higher thermal stability than conventional ammonium organoclays. The basal spacing is generally larger for the phosphonium montmorillonites. These properties provide a good potential for the use of phosphonium organoclays for the synthesis of polymer/clay nanocomposites by melt processing.  相似文献

A polymer nanocomposite was produced by acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) and α‐alumina was prepared through sol‐gel process using aluminum nitrate and citric acid. The particle size was analyzed by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. The nanocomposites were characterized through tensile strength, Young's modulus, strain% at break, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength. The ABS/Al2O3 nanocomposites are found to have slightly higher Young's modulus, but lower tensile strength, strain% at break, flexural and impact strength than the virgin ABS. But its flexural modulus increases with increasing Al2O3 content in ABS matrix. The d‐spacing was calculated in nanocomposites to evaluate the interaction between Al2O3 and ABS. The particle distributions in nanocomposites were studied by SEM. The fractured surfaces of tensile test samples were also examined through SEM and show that the ductile fracture of ABS is converted to brittle fracture with addition of Al2O3. POLYM. Stress‐relaxation behavior of glass fiber‐reinforced polyester composites, prepared by a recently developed manufacturing method called rubber pressure molding (RPM), is investigated with special reference to the effect of environmental temperature (−70°C to +100°C), fiber volume fraction (30–60%), and initial load level (1–5 kN). It is found that the stress‐relaxation rate decreases with an increase in the applied load of composites and a decrease in temperature. Below glass transition temperature, the rate of stress relaxation increases with an increase in volume fraction of fibers in the composites, whereas above glass transition temperature, it increases with a decrease in the volume fraction of fibers. The experimental results for a given composites are summarized by four values, the slopes of the two straight lines (two separate relaxation processes), and their intercepts upon the stress axis. Both the slopes are dependent upon the applied load, temperature, and volume fraction of fibers in the composites. Relaxation times in both primary and secondary are calculated over the wide range of temperatures, loads, and volume fraction of fibers in the composites. It depends strongly on the temperature, but does not depend strongly on the applied load and volume fraction of fibers. The performances of the composites are also evaluated through conventional compression‐molding process. The rate of stress relaxation is small when the composites are made of newly proposed RPM technique when compared with the conventional process. POLYM. Standardization of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) fingerprint region for paints and assessment on the reproducibility using different spectrophotometers were investigated. While selective fingerprint regions may be confusing for technicians/analysts who are non-chemists, we attempt to generalize these regions (e.g., 1300–1000 cm−1 for Epoxy part A and 1400–1000 cm−1 for Epoxy part B) by choosing a universal region (2000–900 cm−1) that works for different paints. Comparison result using a paired student t-test shows that the degree of similarity (r) values from the studied regions are not statistically different. The paint fails the screening analysis occasionally on-site when analyzed using handheld FTIR due to the higher level of noise that gives low r values (r < 0.900 ± 0.002). The same samples were analyzed using a benchtop FTIR and the r values are above 0.900 ± 0.002. While the screening may lead to a false rejection of the sample on-site, there could be occurrence of false acceptance. The on-site screening of EPZ part A with different formulations, for instance, shows that the r values over the entire IR spectrum are above 0.900 ± 0.002 when analyzed using handheld FTIR. After the samples were analyzed using the benchtop, the r values fall below 0.900 ± 0.002.  相似文献

The paper discusses some misconceptions that have contributed to the continued use of thermal desalination processes and promotion of the hybrid desalination process for new plants being built or considered at Middle East locations. The misconceptions are examined both on the basis of fundamental thermodynamic principles and in terms of practical engineering parameters. The analysis shows that there is no economic or performance advantage in the installation of greenfield hybrid power/thermal desalination/ seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plants in preference to power/SWRO plants, because the latter would produce water more cheaply under all conditions and at all fuel costs, and would provide more operational flexibility than the former. The paper identifies situations where the hybrid desalination process can be fully justified: in existing power/desalination plants, where aging boilers and multistage flash (MSF) units need to be repaired or replaced, through retrofitting and repowering. In such situations, abandonment of the MSF process would result in a reduction in the power output of the plant. The paper refers to previous work which showed that the repowering of a typical existing power/desalination station with refurbishment/replacement of the MSF units, together with the addition of SWRO units, would result in a several-fold increase in the water and power output and a dramatic improvement in the fuel efficiency, without any additions to the existing seawater intake system. The paper emphasizes the importance of test stations/demonstration plants at existing power/desalination stations in the Middle East in order to obtain data and make improvements in the technology of higher temperature SWRO, with the feed obtained from the cooling water returning from the power plant condenser and the thermal desalination plant. The paper shows that the potential benefits would easily justify the investment in research and development required to validate this concept.  相似文献

In the present investigation, La1-xCoxCr1-yFeyO3 (x,y = 0.0, 0.12, 0.36, 0.60) perovskite was fabricated via a facile micro-emulsion route. The synthesized perovskites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques to examine the effect of Co and Fe ions on the physico-chemical properties. The ferroelectric, dielectric, and magnetic properties of La1-xCoxCr1-yFeyO3 were changed significantly as a function of dopants contents (Co and Fe ions). Outcomes revealed that the dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetic properties of LaCrO3 perovskite can be tuned significantly via Co and Fe doping and La0.40Co0.60Cr0.40Fe0.60O3 have potential for photocatalytic dye removal under (visible) light expoure. The photocatalytic activity (PCA) of the pristine LaCrO3 and La0.40Co0.60Cr0.40Fe0.60O3 photocatalyst was evaluated under (visible) light irradiation for crystal violet (CV) dye. Experimental results revealed that La0.40Co0.60Cr0.40Fe0.60O3 photocatalyst degrdae almost 77.21% CV dye with the rate constant value of 0.01475 min?1. In the presence of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) scavenger, the PCA of the La0.40Co0.60Cr0.40Fe0.60O3 photocatalyst and rate constant value of the photocatalytic reaction decreased to 32.5% and 0.00491 min?1, suggesting the superoxide as main active specie. Results revealed that Co and Fe doping doped material is efficient for photocatalytic presentations under solar light expoure.  相似文献

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has been used to identify eight triacylglycerols (TAG) in Vernonia galamensis oil (VO). The TAG include trivernolin, divernoloylstearoylglycerol, divernoloyloleoylglycerol, vernoloyllinoleoylstearoylglycerol, vernoloyllinoleoyloleoylglycerol, and vernoloyldilinoleoylglycerol. Samples for the MALDI/TOF/MS analysis were prepared with alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (matrix) in an acetonitrile/tetrahydrofuran solvent system. A mol ratio of matrix/VO (44:1) gave reproducible composite spectra, resulting in resolutions greater than 8,000 and signal-to-noise ratios of above 1000 for the most abundant molecular species. 1,3-Dioleoyl-2-stearoylglycerol and 1,2-dioleoyl-3-palmitoylglycerol were used as calibration standards.  相似文献

Alkylresorcinols, resorcinol derivatives with a long hydrocarbon chain at position 5 of the phenolic ring, have been reported to act as antioxidants and protect polyunsaturated fatty acids against peroxidation. Their structures with meta‐dihydroxy substitutions do not, however, support active hydrogen donation and scavenging of peroxyl radicals responsible for propagation of lipid oxidation. This study compares the antioxidant properties of 5‐n‐pentadecylresorcinol and α‐tocopherol using two model systems: (i) the DPPH· model to test their ability for hydrogen atom donation; and (ii) a triacylglycerol oxidation model to test their ability for scavenging peroxyl radicals. In agreement with theoretical expectations, results from both models showed 5‐n‐pentadecylresorcinol to have very low hydrogen donation and peroxyl radical‐scavenging potency. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This paper deals with three control techniques for a three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) boost rectifier to study their relative performance. Linear, nonlinear, and nonlinear model reference adaptive control (MRAC) methods are developed to control power factor (PF) and regulate output and neutral point voltages. These controllers are designed in Simulink and implemented in real time using the DS1104 DSP of dSPACE for validation on a 1.2-kW prototype of an NPC boost rectifier operating at 1.92 kHz. The performance of boost converter with three control methods has been investigated respectively in steady state in terms of line-current harmonic distortion, efficiency, and PF and during transients such as load steps, utility disturbances, reactive power control, and dc-bus voltage tracking behavior. The linear PI controllers are characterized by reduced complexity but poor performance, whereas the nonlinear control technique has improved the converter performance significantly, while nonlinear MRAC exhibits much better performance in a wide operating range  相似文献
