High Mechanical Strength Double‐Network Hydrogel with Bacterial Cellulose

Double‐network (DN) hydrogels with high mechanical strength have been synthesized using the natural polymers bacterial cellulose (BC) and gelatin. As‐prepared BC contains 90 % water that can easily be squeezed out, with no more recovery in its swelling property. Gelatin gel is brittle and is easily broken into fragments under a modest compression. In contrast, the fracture strength and elastic modulus of a BC–gelatin DN gel under compressive stress are on the order of megapascals, which are several orders of magnitude higher than those of gelatin gel, and almost equivalent to those of articular cartilage. A similar enhancement in the mechanical strength was also observed for the combination of BC with polysaccharides, such as sodium alginate, gellan gum, and ι‐carrageenan.     

Operation of HTS Toggle-Flip-Flop Circuit With Improved Layout Design

Toggle-flip-flop (T-FF) is one of the most important high-T_c superconducting single-flux quantum (HTS SFQ) circuit components and has been designed and fabricated by using YBa₂Cu₃ O_7-delta ramp-edge junction technology. The circuit layout of the T-FF was improved to suppress the junction critical current (I_c) spread in the circuit. Test circuits, which include a T-FF with a single output for evaluating the logic operation and measuring the operating frequency, were fabricated and their operation characteristics were investigated. The T-FF circuit with a single output was successfully operated and finite direct current (dc) supply current margins were obtained at temperatures from 27 to 34 K. Moreover, the maximum operating frequency of the T-FF was estimated to be 360 GHz at 4.2 K and 114 GHz at 41 K. In addition, reduction of dc supply current margins due to thermal noise was also investigated. According to the numerical simulation in which parasitic inductances were taken into account, the narrowest margin in the T-FF circuit wider than plusmn10% was maintained with a bit-error rate (BER) of 10^-6 up to 40 K     

Effects of Digital Doping of Mn on Giant Magneto-Optical Properties of Zn1−x Mn x Se Quantum Wells

We have studied effects of the digital-doping profile of MnSe layers on the giant magneto-optical properties in Zn_1?x Mn _x Se-based quantum wells. The giant Zeeman shift energy increases monotonically with increasing spatial overlap of the exciton wavefunction with the 0.5 monatomic-thick effective Mn layers at the interfaces between the digitally doped MnSe layers and nonmagnetic ZnSe layers. Also, a field-induced enhancement factor of the excitonic photoluminescence intensity, because of the suppression of the exciton energy transfer into the d-d transition of Mn-ions, increases linearly with increasing such overlap of the exciton wavefunction with the effective Mn layer. In addition, the formation energy as large as 18.6 meV and the formation time of the magnetic polaron are determined, which are also affected by the digital-doping profile.     

Requirement for transglutaminase in progesterone-induced decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells

Differentiation of endometrial stromal cells (decidualization) is essential for embryo implantation and maintenance of pregnancy. By sequential complementary DNA subtractive hybridization, one of the messenger RNAs (mRNA) induced by progesterone in human endometrial stromal cells decidualized in vitro was identified as that of a tissue transglutaminase type II (TGase). TGase mRNA was induced within 6 h after the addition of progesterone to the culture, and the effect was dose dependent. Both the TGase inhibitor monodansylcadaverine and oligodeoxynucleotide complementary to the TGase mRNA inhibited the decidualization, as assessed by PRL production and morphological transformation. Expression of TGase mRNA in human decidua and endometria exposed to high levels of progesterone in vivo was demonstrated by Northern blotting and in situ hybridization. These data suggest that TGase is necessary for the decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells and that clarification of the mechanism of action of TGase will facilitate further insight into the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.     

Accelerated neutrophil apoptosis in mice lacking A1-a, a subtype of the bcl-2-related A1 gene

To elucidate the role of A1, a new member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis regulators active in hematopoietic cell apoptosis, we established mice lacking A1-a, a subtype of the A1 gene in mice (A1-a-/- mice). Spontaneous apoptosis of peripheral blood neutrophils of A1-a-/- mice was enhanced compared with that of either wild-type mice or heterozygous mutants (A1-a+/- mice). Neutrophil apoptosis inhibition induced by lipopolysaccharide treatment in vitro or transendothelial migration in vivo observed in wild-type mice was abolished in both A1-a-/- and A1-a+/- animals. On the other hand, the extent of tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced acceleration of neutrophil apoptosis did not differ among A1-a-/-, A1-a+/-, and wild-type mice. The descending order of A1 mRNA expression was wild-type, A1-a+/-, and A1-a-/-. Taken together, these results suggest that A1 is involved in inhibition of certain types of neutrophil apoptosis.     

Fatty acid variation among U.S. Runner-type peanut cultivars

Fatty acid composition was determined among seven U.S. runner-type peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars: Florunner, Sunrunner, GK-7, Southern Runner, Sunbelt Runner, Okrun, and Langley. Significant year and cultivar differences were found within these fatty acid profiles. Southern Runner had the best oleic to linoleic ratio and iodine values; whereas Florunner, Sunrunner, and Langley were the highest in unsaturated and lowest in saturated and long-chain fatty acids. For the future, breeding programs need to continue developing peanut cultivars with improved oil quality.     

Extraction and implementation of muscle synergies in neuro-mechanical control of upper limb movement

This work faces the redundancy problem, a central concern in robotics, in a particular force-producing task by using muscle synergies to simplify the control. We extracted muscle synergies from human electromyograph signals and interpreted the physical meaning of the identified muscle synergies. Based on the human analysis results, we hypothesized a novel control framework that can explain the mechanism of the human motor control. The framework was tested in controlling a pneumatic-driven robotic arm to perform a reaching task. This control method, which uses only two synergies as manipulated variables for driving antagonistic pneumatic artificial muscles to generate desired movements, would be useful to deal with the redundancy problem; thus, suggesting a simple but efficient control for human-like robots to work safely and compliantly with humans.     

Effects of bile acid feeding on hepatic deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase activity in the hamster

In order to investigate the effects of bile acid feeding on hepatic microsomal deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase activity, three different bile acids were administered (0.2% w/w in chow) to hamsters for two weeks. Deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase activity was increased markedly by feeding of cholic acid (CA) and slightly by deoxycholic acid (DCA) Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) had little effect on the enzyme activity. Feeding each of the bile acids significantly inhibited the activity of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase in the order CDCA≥ DCA>CA. There was no correlation between deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase activity and cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase activity. It is concluded that the activity of deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase is up-regulated by feeding DCA and CA and that the mechanism seems to be different from that of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase. The increased activity of hepatic deoxycholate 7α-hydroxylase by CA and DCA should be beneficial in minimizing the toxic effects of DCA in the hamster.     

Thermal behavior of hydrostatically extruded polycarbonate and high-impact polystyrene

Effects of hydrostatic extrusion on the thermal properties of polycarbonate (PC) and of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) were studied using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. A glass transition temperature (T_g) and a peak temperature were determined from the DSC curves for both PC and HIPS extrudates. The T_g values of the PC extrudates, with a percentage reduction in area, R, from 40 to 50%, change appreciably from the value for the as–received PC. The results of the hydrostatic extrusion of the PC billets suggest that a two stage deformation process of molecular chains may be involved. Shear-banding is observed for HIPS extrudates with R = 30 to 60%; this fact indicates that a sub-glass transition (β-transition) occurs at temperatures below T_g. It is suggested that the molecular chains of the HIPS extrudate with R = 70% are oriented in the direction of hydrostatic extrusion. The deformation mechanism of molecular chains caused by the hydrostatic extrusion is discussed.
