The effect of different sintering conditions on the sintered density and microstructure of two different hydroxyapatite (HA) powders was examined. The powder characteristics of a laboratory synthesized HA powder (Lab HA) were low crystallinity, a bimodal particle size distribution, a median particle size of 22 m and a high specific surface area (SSA) of 63 m2/g. By contrast, a commercial calcined HA (commercial HA) was crystalline and had a median particle size of 5 m and a low SSA of 16 m2/g. The different powder characteristics affected the compactability and the sinterability of the two HA powders. Lab HA did not compact as efficiently as commercial HA, resulting in a lower green density, but the onset of sintering of powder compacts of the former was approximately 150 °C lower than the later. The effect of compaction pressure, sintering temperature, time and heating rate on the sintered densities of the two materials was studied. Varying all these sintering conditions significantly affected the sintered density of commercial HA, whereas the sintered density of Lab HA was only affected significantly by increasing the sintering temperature. The Vickers hardness, Hv, of Lab HA was greater than commercial HA for low sintering temperatures, below 1200 °C, whereas for higher sintering temperatures the commercial HA produced ceramics with greater values of hardness. These trends can be related to the sinterability of the two materials.  相似文献

"God" and "Devil" are abstract concepts often linked to vertical metaphors (e.g., "glory to God in the highest," "the Devil lives down in hell"). It is unknown, however, whether these metaphors simply aid communication or implicate a deeper mode of concept representation. In 6 experiments, the authors examined the extent to which the vertical dimension is used in noncommunication contexts involving God and the Devil. Experiment 1 established that people have implicit associations between God-Devil and up-down. Experiment 2 revealed that people encode God-related concepts faster if presented in a high (vs. low) vertical position. Experiment 3 found that people's memory for the vertical location of God- and Devil-like images showed a metaphor-consistent bias (up for God; down for Devil). Experiments 4, 5a, and 5b revealed that people rated strangers as more likely to believe in God when their images appeared in a high versus low vertical position, and this effect was independent of inferences related to power and likability. The current study investigates the joint effects of interpersonal relationships and digital media use on adolescents’ sense of identity. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 2079 students (57% female) between the ages of 11 and 19 years (M = 15.4 years) attending one of seven secondary schools in Bermuda. Using structural equation modeling, the author found that mothers and friends play an important role in adolescents’ lives, with both relationships contributing in positive ways to respondents’ self-concept clarity. Further, the results showed that mother relationship quality affected adolescents’ self-concept clarity both directly and indirectly, through the positive impact it had on friendship quality. Friends also played a mediating role in relation to aspects of adolescents’ digital media use. Specifically, the negative association detected between online identity expression/exploration and self-concept clarity was mediated partially by low friendship quality. Going online to communicate with one’s friends appeared to play a more positive role in adolescents’ sense of identity. The results showed that online peer communication affected self-concept clarity indirectly through its positive impact on friendship quality.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the incorporation of silicon on the surface charge of hydroxyapatite (HA) and to assess surface structural changes of HA and Si–HA induced by dissolution in both static and dynamic systems. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that SiO4 4– groups were substituted for PO4 3– groups in the silicon-hydroxyapatite (Si–HA) lattice according to a previously proposed substitution mechanism without the formation of other crystalline phases, such as tricalcium phosphate or calcium oxide. The substituted silicon induced a decrease in the net surface charge and the isoelectric point of HA as determined by zeta potential (ZP) measurements. At physiological pH=7.4 the surface charge of Si–HA was significantly lowered compared to unmodified HA, i.e. –50±5 to –71±5 eV, caused by the presence of silicate groups in the HA lattice, which may account for a faster in vitro apatite formation using SBF testing. XPS results indicated that silicon seems to be preferentially leached out from Si–HA surface compared to other ionic species after dissolution studies in tris-buffer using a dynamic system.  相似文献

Two experiments tested the hypothesis that the hypnotic underestimation of time is mediated by attentional processing. In Exp 1, variations in the demands placed on attentional resources produced substantial differences in the subjective estimates of identical length intervals occurring within a hypnotic context. ln Exp 2, attentional manipulation was assessed in both hypnotic and waking contexts. Time judgments were again found to vary with attentional demands but not with hypnotic context. The results are consistent with a busy beaver hypothesis, which holds that hypnotic, as well as nonhypnotic, time estimates are a by-product of the attentional processing demands of the task. Methylene blue derivatives, synthesised as novel photosensitising agents are usually simple auxochromic variations on the lead compound. The current paper represents the initial report on the synthesis and biological testing of a new class of phenothiazinium derivatives, having either one or two tetrahydropyridine rings fused to the phenothiazinium chromophore. The derivatives exhibited extended absorption wavelengths, increased amphiphilic character and much greater photoantimicrobial efficacies compared to methylene blue, some examples being more effective even than dimethyl methylene blue. The high activities of this class of photosensitiser recommend its use in infection control, both locally and in blood product decontamination.  相似文献

Exposure to sunlight is the major cause of skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun causes damage to DNA by direct absorption and can cause skin cell death. UV also causes production of reactive oxygen species that may interact with DNA to indirectly cause oxidative DNA damage. UV increases accumulation of p53 in skin cells, which upregulates repair genes but promotes death of irreparably damaged cells. A benefit of sunlight is vitamin D, which is formed following exposure of 7-dehydrocholesterol in skin cells to UV. The relatively inert vitamin D is metabolized to various biologically active compounds, including 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. Therapeutic use of vitamin D compounds has proven beneficial in several cancer types, but more recently these compounds have been shown to prevent UV-induced cell death and DNA damage in human skin cells. Here, we discuss the effects of vitamin D compounds in skin cells that have been exposed to UV. Specifically, we examine the various signaling pathways involved in the vitamin D-induced protection of skin cells from UV.  相似文献

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of critical illness, and evidence is emerging that suggests AKI disrupts the function of other organs. It is a recognized phenomenon that patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have reduced hepatic metabolism of drugs, via the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme group, and drug dosing guidelines in AKI are often extrapolated from data obtained from patients with CKD. This approach, however, is flawed because several confounding factors exist in AKI. The data from animal studies investigating the effects of AKI on CYP activity are conflicting, although the results of the majority do suggest that AKI impairs hepatic CYP activity. More recently, human study data have also demonstrated decreased CYP activity associated with AKI, in particular the CYP3A subtypes. Furthermore, preliminary data suggest that patients expressing the functional allele variant CYP3A5*1 may be protected from the deleterious effects of AKI when compared with patients homozygous for the variant CYP3A5*3, which codes for a non-functional protein. In conclusion, there is a need to individualize drug prescribing, particularly for the more sick and vulnerable patients, but this needs to be explored in greater depth.  相似文献
