Human peripheral eosinophils express functional interferon-gamma receptors (IFN-gammaR)

In order to determine whether or not IFN-gammaR is associated with regulatory mechanisms on human eosinophil function, we examined the expression of functional IFN-gammaR on human peripheral eosinophils. In this study, peripheral blood eosinophils were obtained from seven normal controls and 12 patients (bronchial asthma, n = 9, and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES), n = 3), and the purity of eosinophils was 97.11 +/- 2.31%, n = 19. We first showed that anti-IFN-gammaR alpha-chain MoAb reacted with all tested eosinophils of both normal controls and patients by flow cytometry analysis. We also showed expression of mRNA for the alpha-chain of IFN-gammaR in all purified eosinophils of six individuals. Further, to characterize IFN-gammaR on eosinophils, we did binding experiments with 125I-IFN-gamma on purified peripheral eosinophils. The linear Scatchard plot indicated a single type of high-affinity binding sites (dissociation constant (Kd) = 3.89-4.95 x 10(-10) M, numbers of binding sites = 183-233/cell, n = 3). To determine whether IFN-gammaR on eosinophils is functional, we examined surface eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) and CD69 induction after IFN-gammaR ligation with recombinant human IFN-gamma (rhIFN-gamma) on eosinophils by flow cytometry. rhIFN-gamma stimulation significantly induced both ECP and CD69 expression on the 2-18 h-cultured eosinophils in a dose-dependent manner. Further, the effects of rhIFN-gamma stimulation were significantly blocked by both a neutralizing anti-IFN-gamma MoAb and a blocking anti-IFN-gammaR MoAb. These results suggest that human peripheral eosinophils express functional IFN-gammaR.     

Successful surgical repair for a patient with atrial septal defect and severe pulmonary hypertension--its surgical indication and prostaglandin E1 use for postoperative pulmonary hypertensive crisis

A 45-year-old woman with atrial septal defect and pulmonary hypertension was admitted for surgical repair. Cardiac catheterization data revealed pulmonary to systemic flow ratio (Qp/Qs) of 1.81, pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) of 82/30 mmHg and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) of 10.8 unit. Open lung biopsy was added to evaluate pulmonary vascular obstructive disease (PVOD) which was shown Heath-Edwards grade 3 PVOD. Following closure of the defect, PAP (systolic) exceeded momentarily systemic level after cardiopulmonary bypass. Prostaglandin E1 drip was remarkably effective to bring down PAP during early postoperative period. Although PAP has not been shown significant decrease on catheterization of one year after surgery, great symptomatic improvement has been achieved.     

Primary biliary cirrhosis: symptoms, laboratory data and diagnosis

The most frequent and important symptoms in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) are pruritus and jaundice. In the majority, jaundice appears within one half to two years of onset of pruritus. Xanthoma, bone change and sicca syndrome are often observed. The recent increase in number of asymptomatic PBC is the result of progagation of medical examination. In the biochemical tests, elevation of the biliary enzymes, such as ALP and gamma-GTP, is characteristic, as well as, a high level of serum IgM. Serum bilirubin values are gradually raised along with the clinical course of the disease. Positive antimitochondrial antibody (AMA) is the most valuable immunological finding for the diagnosis of PBC. Anti-pyruvate dehydrogenase complex E2 component E2 has the same significance as AMA. Diagnostic criteria si shown in this paper.     

Subsurface structures in initial stage of FeSi2 growth studied by high-resolution Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy

The initial stage of iron silicide formation is investigated by high-resolution Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. During the Fe deposition on Si(001) at 470 °C, the formation of FeSi₂ is confirmed by the surface peak analysis. Initially, FeSi₂ grows epitaxially so that one of the major crystallographic axes is parallel to the <111> axis of the Si substrate. With increasing Fe deposition, the deviation between the major crystallographic axis of the silicide region and Si<111> increases although the electron diffraction pattern is independent of the amount of Fe deposition. Therefore, the subsurface crystallographic structure of iron silicide is transformed from a cubic-like to a low-symmetry structure.     

Stabilization of bioethanol recovery with silicone rubber‐coated ethanol‐permselective silicalite membranes by controlling the pH of acidic feed solution

In order to produce highly concentrated bioethanol by pervaporation using an ethanol‐permselective silicalite membrane, techniques to suppress adsorption of succinic acid, which is a chief by‐product of ethanol fermentation and causes the deterioration in pervaporation performance, onto the silicalite crystals was investigated. The amount adsorbed increased as the pH of the aqueous succinic acid solution decreased. The pervaporation performance also decreased with decreasing pH when the ternary mixtures of ethanol/water/succinic acid were separated. Using silicalite membranes individually coated with two types of silicone rubber, pervaporation performance was significantly improved in the pH range of 5 to 7, when compared with that of non‐coated silicalite membranes in ternary mixtures of ethanol/water/succinic acid. Moreover, when using a silicalite membrane double‐coated with the two types of silicone rubber, pervaporation performance was stabilized at lower pH values. In the separation of bioethanol by pervaporation using the double‐coated silicalite membrane, removal of accumulated substances having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at approximately 260 nm from the fermentation broth proved to be vital for efficient pervaporation. Far infrared reflection spectra in narrow-gap semiconductors

Far infrared reflection spectra of Cd_XHg_1?X Se are measured in the region 20 to 600 cm^?1 at temperatures between 5 and 77 K. Reflection spectra are explained well by the dynamic dielectric function which is constructed as a sum of Γ₈?Γ₈ interband, intraband and phonon contributions. The plasmon-LO phonon coupling effect is also discussed.     

Electron transport in InGaO3(ZnO)m (m=integer) studied using single-crystalline thin films and transparent MISFETs

We have investigated the characteristics of transparent metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MISFETs) fabricated using InGaO₃(ZnO)_m (m=integer) single-crystalline thin films as n-channel layers and amorphous alumina as gate insulator films. The MISFETs exhibit good characteristics such as insensitivity to visible light illumination, off-current as low as ∼1 nA with a positive threshold voltage of ∼3 V and on/off current ratio of 10⁵. The field-effect mobility increased from ∼1 to ∼10 cm² (V s)⁻¹ as the m-value increased. Room temperature Hall mobility also increased. However, unexpectedly these values were lower than the field-effect mobility. It is explained by existence of shallow localized state in the homologous compounds.     

Hierarchical Self‐Assembly of Peptide‐Coated Carbon Nanotubes

Numerous applications, from molecular electronics to super‐strong composites, have been suggested for carbon nanotubes. Despite this promise, difficulty in assembling raw carbon nanotubes into functional structures is a deterrent for applications. In contrast, biological materials have evolved to self‐assemble, and the lessons of their self‐assembly can be applied to synthetic materials such as carbon nanotubes. Here we show that single‐walled carbon nanotubes, coated with a designed amphiphilic peptide, can be assembled into ordered hierarchical structures. This novel methodology offers a new route for controlling the physical properties of nanotube systems at all length scales from the nano‐ to the macroscale. Moreover, this technique is not limited to assembling carbon nanotubes, and could be modified to serve as a general procedure for controllably assembling other nanostructures into functional materials.     

An analysis of slow phase velocity on congenital nystagmus-asymmetrical responses of optokinetic stimulation

Persistence of the hypoglossal artery is an unusual congenital abnormality of the carotid arterial system, and the simultaneous occurrence of atheromatous disease in the internal carotid artery and persistent hypoglossal artery is even more uncommon. Carotid surgery in this situation is challenging, and the surgeon must be aware of potential inherent pitfalls. A 74-year-old woman with asymptomatic stenosis of both internal carotid and hypoglossal arteries associated with occlusion of the contralateral internal carotid artery underwent successful revascularization. The anatomy of this unusual lesion and the surgical strategies, which included cranial nerve dissection and mandibular subluxation, are reviewed.
