DISLOCATION STRUCTURE AND NON-PROPORTIONAL HARDENING OF TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL

Abstract— This paper describes the microstructure of Type 304 stainless steel after cyclic loading at room temperature under tension-torsion non-proportional strain paths. The degree of cyclic non-proportional hardening is correlated with changes in the dislocation substructure. Dislocation cells, dislocation bundles, twins and stacking faults are all observed. The type of microstructure formed and resultant stress response is dependent on the degree of non-proportional loading and strain range. Cyclic stress range was uniquely correlated with mean cell size.     

Notch effect on creep–fatigue life for Sn–3.5Ag solder

This paper studies the creep–fatigue crack initiation and failure lives of Sn–3.5Ag solder notched specimens focused on the multiaxial strain at the notch root. Push–pull creep–fatigue tests were performed using three circumferential notched specimens using four kinds of creep–fatigue strain waveforms. Multiaxial strains at the notched section were calculated by finite element (FE) analysis under four kinds of creep–fatigue loading. Creep–fatigue damage laws were applied for evaluating the crack initiation and failure lives using the multiaxial strains obtained by the FE analysis. von Mises equivalent strain at the notch root estimated the crack initiation lives with a large scatter as well as the failure lives. Instead, the mean value of von Mises equivalent strain over the cross section of the notch root estimated the crack initiation and failure lives with a small scatter.     

Anti-Helicobacter pylori agents. 2. Structure activity relationships in a new series of 2-alkylguanidino-4-furylthiazoles

SAR for antimicrobial activity against H. pylori was investigated in a new series of 2-alkylguanidino-4-furylthiazoles. Of the compounds obtained, cyclohexylmethyl and ethoxyethyl derivatives were identified as a novel class of anti-H. pylori agents which possessed potent and selective antimicrobial activity against H. pylori. These compounds also showed gastric antisecretory activity.     

CREEP-FATIGUE STUDIES UNDER A BIAXIAL STRESS STATE AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE

In order to study creep-fatigue interactions under multiaxial stress states, both push-pull and reversed torsion low-cycle fatigue tests were carried out using an austenitic stainless steel, SUS 304, at 923 K in air. From the tests, it is concluded that the hold-times introduced at the peak strain reduce low-cycle fatigue lives in the push-pull mode, but in the torsional mode they were not so harmful. This difference in the hold-time effect is discussed from considerations of crack formation and propagation and the stress amplitude applied to the specimen. Both maximum principal strain range, Δε₁, and the von Mises' equivalent strain range, Δε_eq, provide a nearly adequate comparison base for the assessment of biaxial low-cycle fatigue lives in tests without strain hold-time but are inadequate for hold-time tests. An equivalent stress range, Δσ*, which includes the effect of the stress parallel to the fatigue crack and which was previously proposed by the authors for no hold-time tests, is applied to the hold-time tests in the biaxial stress state. It is found that Δσ* is a good parameter for the correlation of biaxial low-cycle fatigue data in both no hold-time and hold-time tests.     

Automatic electron beam alignment adjustment system and automatic filament current adjustment system for electron beam welder

Recently, the electron beam welders with high acceleration voltage (more than 100 kV) and high electrical power (more than 15 kW) have been reviewed the role of the high-energy electron beam density again, due to space or aircraft development or automobile industry desired high productivity and high accurate welding for saving energy. NEC group have supplied these electron beam welders. This time, the automatic alignment adjustment system of the electron beam orbit and the automatic adjustment system of filament current were developed and put to a practical use. As a result, the great effectiveness for the stability of welding quality was apparent.     

Kinetic resolution of an indan derivative using Bacillus sp. SUI-12: synthesis of a key intermediate of the melatonin receptor agonist TAK-375

The chiral indan derivative (S)-2 (2-[(8S)-1,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-indeno[5,4-b]furan-8-yl]ethyl-amine) was synthesized by enzyme-catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis of the racemic acetamide 1 (N-[2-(1,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-indeno[5,4-b]furan-8-yl)ethyl]acetamide). The reaction was carried out using Bacillus sp. SUI-12 screened for the ability to hydrolyze 1 to give (S)-2 with high enantioselectivity. In a scaled-up experiment, a low reaction rate was observed. However, by changing the culture medium and the reaction conditions, it became possible to run the reaction to 40% conversion on a 10-g or more scale, obtaining (S)-2 at >;99% enantiomeric excess (ee). The (S)-2 obtained was available for the synthesis of the melatonin receptor agonist TAK-375 (N-[2-[(8S)-1,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2H-indeno[5,4-b]furan-8-yl]ethyl]propanamide).     

Performance and emissions of a supercharged dual-fuel engine fueled by hydrogen-rich coke oven gas

This study investigated the engine performance and emissions of a supercharged dual-fuel engine fueled by hydrogen-rich coke oven gas and ignited by a pilot amount of diesel fuel. The engine was tested for use as a cogeneration engine, so power output while maintaining a reasonable thermal efficiency was important. Experiments were carried out at a constant pilot injection pressure and pilot quantity for different fuel-air equivalence ratios and at various injection timings without and with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The experimental strategy was to optimize the injection timing to maximize engine power at different fuel-air equivalence ratios without knocking and within the limit of the maximum cylinder pressure. The engine was tested first without EGR condition up to the maximum possible fuel-air equivalence ratio of 0.65. A maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of 1425 kPa and a thermal efficiency of 39% were obtained. However, the nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions were high. A simulated EGR up to 50% was then performed to obtain lower NOx emissions. The maximum reduction of NOx was 60% or more maintaining the similar levels of IMEP and thermal efficiency. Two-stage combustion was obtained; this is an indicator of maximum power output conditions and a precursor of knocking combustion.     

Analytical Method for Diacylglycerol Kinase ζ Activity in Cells Using Protein Myristoylation and Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Specific inhibitors of diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) ζ can be promising anticancer medications via the activation of cancer immunity. Although the detection of cellular activities of target enzymes is essential for drug screening in addition to in vitro assays, it is difficult to detect the activity of DGKζ in cells. In the present study, we generated AcGFP-DGKζ cDNA with a consensus N-myristoylation sequence at the 5′ end (Myr-AcGFP-DGKζ) to target DGKζ to membranes. Using liquid chromatography (LC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) (LC–MS/MS), we showed that Myr-AcGFP-DGKζ, but not AcGFP-DGKζ without the myristoylation sequence, substantially augmented the levels of several phosphatidic acid (PtdOH) species. In contrast to Myr-AcGFP-DGKζ, its inactive mutant did not exhibit an increase in PtdOH production, indicating that the increase in PtdOH production was DGK activity-dependent. This method will be useful in chemical compound selection for the development of drugs targeting DGKζ and can be applicable to various soluble (nonmembrane bound) lipid-metabolizing enzymes, including other DGK isozymes.     

A case of primary hyperparathyroidism that had been treated under a diagnosis of depression for 10 years

A 66 year old man who had been treated under a diagnosis of depression for 10 years was referred to the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto because of general fatigue and appetite loss. The patient was diagnosed as having primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) based on the increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) and serum calcium levels. Computed tomography revealed solitary adenoma of parathyroid gland. The resection of this solitary adenoma improved the PTH and serum calcium concentrations to normal ranges, which resulted in an improvement in his depressive state. This case suggests that ionic calcium levels contribute to the mental symptoms associated with PHPT. As PHPT is curable, the possibility of PHPT should be taken into account when patients have depressive symptoms.
