Photovoltaic effect based on wet poly(vinyl alcohol)/merocyanine dye junction

The sandwich cell, Au/wet poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/merocyanine (MD)/Au, based on the PVA/MD junction exhibited photovoltaic and rectifying effects. Forward dark current from the MD/Au electrode to the counter PVA/Au electrode through the cell was observed. The Au/MD electrode showed a positive photovoltage with respect to the PVA/Au electrode regardless of the direction of the incident light. It was suggested that a heterojunction barrier similar to the Schottky type formed at polymer/dye interface was responsible for the photo charge separation.     

Multilayer approximation for plane wave propagation in a layered medium

Linear profile multilayer approximation for computing reflection or transmission coefficients of plane wave by a layered medium, which is formal extension of standard staircase stratification method, is studied theoretically and numerically. The problem is reduced to evaluate2 times 2matrix product whose elements include the Bessel functions of orderpm 1/3andpm 2/3. The polynomial approximation for the Bessel function is constructed by applying modified Chebyshev method to facilitate the numerical calculation.     

Hyperinsulinemia but no diabetes in transgenic mice homozygously expressing the tyrosine kinase-deficient human insulin receptor

We generated transgenic mice homozygous for the tyrosine kinase-deficient human insulin receptor (hIRK1030M(+/+)) under control of the insulin receptor promoter. Similar growth patterns and results of glucose tolerance tests were observed among normal, heterozygous, and homozygous mice. Insulin tolerance test indicated no significant difference in the hypoglycemic response to insulin among the three genotypes. However, the serum insulin levels of the homozygous mice before and after glucose loading (201.42 +/- 58.15 pg/ml to 578.57 +/- 49.03 pg/ml) were significantly higher than in the control mice (100.92 +/- 19.55 pg/ml to 356.36 +/- 55.08 pg/ml; p < 0.01 and p < 0.01, respectively) and heterozygous mice (74.46 +/- 18.55 pg/ml to 352.33 +/- 52.43 pg/ml; p < 0.005 and p < 0.01, respectively). Immunohistological evidence of pancreatic islets showed no significant difference among the three genotypes. Taken together, these results suggest that the tyrosine kinase-deficient insulin receptor causes hyperinsulinemia but not diabetes in these homozygous transgenic mice.     

Biochemical characterization of acetyl-CoA:1-alkyl-2-lyso-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine acetyltransferase in rat spleen microsomes

Acetyl-CoA:1-alkyl-2-lyso-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (lyso-PAF) ultrasonic disruption in the presence of 25% glycerol from rat spleen microsomes. About 26% of the enzymatic activity was recovered in the 225,000×g supernatant by this treatment, although the specific activity was slightly decreased compared with the original microsomes. The solubilized enzyme was remarkably susceptible to various kinds of metal ions. Sulfhydryl reagents such as p-chloromercuribenzoate and N-ethyl-maleimide significantly inhibited the enzyme reaction, suggesting that the enzyme is an SH enzyme. Based on the sedimentation pattern in sucrose density centrifugation, the isoelectric point, the kinetic characteristics and the sensitivity to tryptic digestion of microsomes, it appears that acetyl-CoA:lyso-PAF acetyltransferase does not differ from the acetyltransferase responsible for the transfer of acetate from acetyl-CoA to 1-acyl-2-lyso-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine.     

Preparation of flame-retardant polyethylene foam of open-cell type by radiation grafting of vinyl phosphonate oligomer

Flame-retardant polyethylene foam was successfully obtained by grafting a vinyl phosphonate oligomer onto polyethylene foam of an open-cell type using a simultaneous radiation grafting technique. The foam was impregnated with the oligomer and irradiated in a nitrogen atmosphere with an electron beam. The grafted foam thus obtained was found to pass the three most severe flammability tests that have to be cleared when the foam is to be used for materials where high flame-retardant property is required. No hydrogen cyanide was detected in burning exhaust gas of the grafted foam. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) develop both periarticular and generalized osteoporosis. Periarticular osteopenia in appendicular bones occurs early in the course of RA and is one of the earliest radiological signs of RA. An uncoupled state in bone resorption-formation linkage, contributes to the development of periarticular osteopenia and it might be mediated through an increased productions of cytokines and prostaglandins by synovium and bone marrow. Accordingly, early suppression of rheumatoid synovitis is necessary for the prevention of periarticular osteopenia. Generalized osteoporosis is also common in RA and leads to increased risk of fractures. Generalized osteoporosis considered to be multifactorial and factors contributing to lumbar osteoporosis might be different from those to loss of appendicular bones, such as femur and radius. Corticosteroids and menopausal state are important risk factors for lumbar osteoporosis. Rheumatoid activity and reduced physical activity are also important determinants. According to the previous studies, however, the influence of functional impairment is more prominent in the femoral BMD compared to spinal BMD. In addition to control of RA and maintenance of physical activity, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and bisphosphonate are possible agents for the treatment of osteoporosis in RA patients, especially postmenopausal women.     

Xerographic development using single-component nonmagnetic toner

No magnetic material is necessary for this system. A thin layer of nonmagnetic toner is formed on the surface of a metal roller by means of an elastic plate which is pressed against the roller. The toner particles are charged triboelectrically by friction with the metal plate. The toner layer is attached to the roller by electrostatic force, and is carried around to the photosensitive drum. The latent image is developed with the noncontact development technique. The insulative toner developed for this system has a superior triboelectric characteristic. A model for toner charging is shown. The numerical calculations based on the model agree well with the experimental results. The model suggests that the metal plate controls the toner charge     

Degradation mechanisms of GaAs PHEMTs in high humidity conditions

We have studied the degradation mechanisms of AlGaAs/InGaAs pseudomorphic HEMTs (PHEMTs) under high humidity conditions (85 °C, 85% relative humidity). The degraded samples under high humidity conditions show a decrease in maximum drain current (I_max) and a positive shift in threshold voltage (V_th). Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images from the deteriorated devices reveal an existence of damaged recess surface region and a peeling of a passivation film (SiN_x). The secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) depth profile at the interface between the passivation film and AlGaAs surface also indicates the diffusion of gallium (Ga), arsenic (As) and aluminum (Al) into the passivation film. The degradation of PHEMTs arises from mainly two mechanisms: (1) the positive shift in V_th due to stress change under the gate caused by the peeling of passivation films, and (2) the decrease in I_max due to the net carrier concentration reduction of the AlGaAs carrier supply layer caused by the combination of surface degradation at the AlGaAs recess regions and diffusion of Ga, As and Al at the interface between the passivation film and AlGaAs surface. A special treatment just prior to the deposition of SiN_x films on the devices effectively suppresses the degradation of PHEMTs under high humidity conditions without degradation of the high frequency performance.     

Adenocarcinoma arising in a tailgut cyst: report of a case

We report herein the unusual case of a 66-year-old woman found to have adenocarcinoma arising in a tailgut cyst. The patient had been observed for 6 months following the discovery of a presacral cystic mass measuring 10 x 9 cm for which she had refused surgery. The serum tumor marker, carcinoembryonic antigen, became slightly elevated, and diagnostic imaging distinctly revealed a tumorous lesion with papillary projection into the cyst lumen. The cystic mass was then excised through the transsacral approach. The pathological findings were compatible with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma arising in a tailgut cyst. This entity is extremely rare, and only six cases, including our own, have been reported in the English literature. Early complete excision is advised because it is almost impossible to determine for certain whether presacral cystic masses are benign or malignant prior to surgery.
