Chlorine (10 to 200 microg/ml), chlorine dioxide (10 to 200 microg/ml), and a peroxyacetic acid-based sanitizer (40 and 80 microg/ ml) were evaluated for effectiveness in killing spores of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis in suspensions and on the surface of stainless steel and apples. Water and 5% horse serum were used as carriers for spore inoculum applied to the surface of stainless steel coupons, and 5% horse serum was used as a carrier for inoculum applied to apples. Inocula were dried on stainless steel for 5 h and on apples for 22 to 24 h before treating with sanitizers. At the concentrations of sanitizers tested, sensitivities of planktonic B. cereus and B. thuringiensis spores were similar. A portion of the spores surviving treatment with chlorine and, more markedly, chlorine dioxide had decreased tolerance to heat. Planktonic spores of both species were more sensitive to sanitizers than were spores on the surface of stainless steel or apples. At the same concentrations, chlorine was more effective than chlorine dioxide in killing spores in suspension and on stainless steel. The lethality of chlorine dioxide was markedly reduced when inoculum on stainless steel coupons was suspended in 5% horse serum as a carrier rather than water. Chlorine and chlorine dioxide at concentrations of 10 to 100 microg/ml were equally effective in killing spores on apples. Significant reductions of > or = 3.8 to 4.5 log CFU per apple were achieved by treatment with 100 microg/ml of either of the two sanitizers. The peroxyacetic acid sanitizer (40 and 80 microg/ml) was ineffective in killing Bacillus spores in the test systems investigated. Results provide information on the effectiveness of sanitizers commonly used in the food processing industry in killing Bacillus spores in suspension, on a food-contact surface, and on a ready-to-eat food.  相似文献

Whereas the smoking prevalence rates in the general population are declining, rates among people diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) continue to be elevated. Previous research has shown that nicotine may improve attention and mood, suggesting that nicotine may help ameliorate the attentional and emotional problems associated with ADHD. The present study examined the effects of nicotine with and without stimulant medication on ADHD symptoms, moods, and arousal in the everyday lives of smokers with ADHD. A total of 10 smokers with ADHD who were being treated with stimulant medication were asked to abstain from smoking while participating in the study. Participants underwent four conditions in randomized order: (a) Nicotine patch+stimulant medication, (b) nicotine patch only, (c) placebo patch+stimulant medication, and (d) placebo patch only. Each condition continued for 2 days, during which self-reports of ADHD symptoms and moods were obtained using electronic diaries. Lightweight ambulatory monitors recorded cardiovascular activity at each diary entry. Smoking abstinence was verified by expired carbon monoxide and salivary cotinine analysis. Results showed that nicotine patches and stimulant medication alone and in combination reduced difficulty concentrating and core ADHD symptoms compared with placebo patch only. Borderline improvement in impatience and self-control was seen with nicotine patch administration primarily on day 1. Nicotine patches also tended to elevate systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared with placebo patch during day 2. The findings suggest that smokers with ADHD experience nicotine-related reductions in ADHD symptoms during their everyday lives.  相似文献

An optimization procedure has been developed for branching storm and sanitary sewer systems with a pre-determined layout for determining the minimum total cost. The model was developed within Microsoft Excel using simulated annealing as the optimization procedure. The total cost of the storm sewer system that was obtained with this optimal design procedure was compared to the total cost of the system as obtained from the conventional straight slope design procedure. Applying the simulated annealing optimizer to the design of the branching storm sewer network resulted in a cost savings of over $77,100 or about 7 % (a reduction from $1,117,700 to $1,040,600). These significant savings were realized by simply going an extra step and implementing an optimization technique during the design phase. Use of Excel should enhance the availability and the usage of such an optimization model for the design of storm and sanitary sewer systems by consulting engineers and various agencies.  相似文献

An environmental and technical sustainability assessment methodology is developed for both centralized and dual water distribution systems (WDSs) with and without fire flow scenarios. Technical sustainability of potable and reclaimed water networks is measured by a sustainability index (SI) assessment using reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability performance criteria. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPANET software is used to simulate hydraulic (i.e. nodal pressure) and water quality (i.e. water age) analysis in a WDS. Total fresh water use and total energy intensity are considered as environmental sustainability criteria. The procedure considers two separate alternatives for meeting fire flows: (1) adding pumping to a system or (2) adding a non-potable WDS. The reclaimed system is designed using linear programming (LP) optimization. For each alternative, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is used to combine technical and environmental sustainability criteria for an urban WDS.  相似文献

The methodology is basedupon solving the discrete-time optimal control problemusing a successive approximation linear quadraticregulator interfaced with a simulator. Theunsaturated flow model HYDRUS is modified to simulatethe water content distribution, the infiltrationprocess, and the draining process. A penalty functionmethod is used to treat the bound constraints on thewater content and the cycle time. Linalool was present at 8.6 ± 0.9 mg/g in the dried leaves of Ocimum canum Sims, an annual mint used in Rwanda to protect against postharvest insect damage. Direct exposure of adults of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohem.) to milled, dried O. canum leaves resulted in 100% mortality of males and 50% mortality of females after 48 hr. Dose-response curves for linalool were completed with adult Z. subfasciatus, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), and Sitophilus oryzae (L.) using a filter paper bioassay. The LC50 values were: 428 μg/cm2 for Z. subfasciatus; 405 μg/cm2 for A. obtectus; 428 μg/cm2 for R. dominica; 427 μg/cm2 for S. oryzae. Knockdown was occasionally followed by recovery at doses less than the LC50 for all species. There are significant differences in the LC50 and LT50 values for male and female Z. subfasciatus. At the lower dosages hyperactivity rarely preceded moribundity and mortality where these occurred, while at higher dosages hyperactivity occurred soon after initial exposure and preceded imminent death. A concentration increase from 250 to 750 μg/cm2, representing a tripling of dosage, spanned th 10–100% response mortality for all species at 24 hr. Air-exposure of linalool-treated papers (500 μg/cm2) for up to 24 hr significantly decreased toxicity to both sexes of Z. subfasciatus. Quantitative analysis showed the only significant decrease in the amount of linalool to occur after 0.25 hr, and this did not fully correlate with the resulting decrease in efficacy against both sexes of Z. subfasciatus. The results are discussed in terms of the efficacy of using O. canum for the protection against loss due to insects in the traditional food storage systems of Rwanda.  相似文献

This study investigated whether changes in the technological/social environment in the United States over time have resulted in concomitant changes in the multitasking skills of younger generations. One thousand, three hundred and nineteen Americans from three generations were queried to determine their at-home multitasking behaviors. An anonymous online questionnaire asked respondents to indicate which everyday and technology-based tasks they choose to combine for multitasking and to indicate how difficult it is to multitask when combining the tasks. Combining tasks occurred frequently, especially while listening to music or eating. Members of the “Net Generation” reported more multitasking than members of “Generation X,” who reported more multitasking than members of the “Baby Boomer” generation. The choices of which tasks to combine for multitasking were highly correlated across generations, as were difficulty ratings of specific multitasking combinations. The results are consistent with a greater amount of general multitasking resources in younger generations, but similar mental limitations in the types of tasks that can be multitasked.  相似文献

This paper introduces the first detailed reaction mechanisms for Br/Hg chemistry in flue gas, and interprets the Hg oxidation performance across a broad range of Br injection rates in recent field tests at Plant Miller. Homogeneous chemistry with Br species is much faster than with Cl species because the Br atom concentrations at the furnace exit are three to four orders of magnitude greater. The dominant channels with Br are analogous to those for Cl, whereby a Br atom partially oxidizes Hg0 into HgBr which is then oxidized into HgBr2 by Br2. Mercury also oxidizes heterogeneously on unburned carbon (UBC) with Br species. This mechanism is also analogous to the surface mechanism for Cl species, except that (i) Hg0 adsorption is faster on brominated sites and (ii) the high Br atom concentrations promote recombination reactions which maintain very low surface coverages of Hg/Br species. Hence, Br addition does not promote the production of particulate-Hg. Catalytic Hg0 oxidation on SCR monoliths by Br species is more than 40 times faster than by Cl species and follows a similar mechanism. For all Br loadings over 10 ppmw in the field tests, essentially all Hg0 entering the SCR was oxidized.  相似文献
