Overlaid reference elements need to be sufficiently visible to effectively relate to the underlying information, but not so obtrusive that they clutter the presentation. We seek to create guidelines for presenting such structures through experimental studies to define boundary conditions for visual intrusiveness. We base our work on the practice of designers, who use transparency to integrate overlaid grids with their underlying imagery. Previous work discovered a useful range of alpha values for black or white grids overlayed on scatterplot images rendered in shades of gray over gray backgrounds of different lightness values. This work compares black grids to blue and red ones on different image types of scatterplots and maps. We expected that the coloured grids over grayscale images would be more visually salient than black ones, resulting in lower alpha values. Instead, we found that there was no significant difference between the boundaries set for red and black grids, but that the boundaries for blue grids were set consistently higher (more opaque). As in our previous study, alpha values are affected by image density rather than image type, and are consistently lower than many default settings. These results have implications for the design of subtle reference structures.  相似文献

The effects of common solvents on alkyl chain conformational order in a series of high-density C22 stationary phases with surface coverage ranging from 3.61 to 6.97 micromol/m2 are investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Conformational order is evaluated using the intensity ratio of the antisymmetric and symmetric nu(CH2) modes as well as the frequencies at which these Raman bands are observed. Solvents studied include methanol-d4, acetonitrile-d3, water-d2, toluene-d8, chloroform-d. and benzene-d6. Alkyl chain conformational order and, hence, solvation of the stationary phase, is dependent on the Gibbs free energy change for these molecules at infinite dilution in hexadecane (DeltaG(o)HD), as well as stationary-phase properties (polymerization method and surface coverage). In general, polar solvents increase slightly the conformational order of these C22 stationary phases, while nonpolar solvents decrease conformational order. A comparison is made between C22 and C18 bonded-phase systems to further understand the role of alkyl chain length on solvent-stationary phase interactions. The change in alkyl chain conformational order induced by solvent is also compared to that induced by temperature, which provides insight into the effect of chromatographic conditions on stationary-phase shape selectivity, an important application of these materials.  相似文献

A method is presented for the preparation of silica-based alkylsilane stationary phases using octanol as a displaceable surface template to control the rate of alkylsilane condensation with the silica surface, and thereby, the resulting alkylsilane surface coverage. This method improves upon conventional preparation schemes by allowing alkylsilane stationary phases of systematically varying surface coverage to be prepared from a single reaction mixture and a single precursor molecule without rigorous control of water content of the solution or of the silica. Octadecylsilane stationary phases ranging in surface coverage from approximately 3.5 to 6.0 micromol/m(2) were synthesized using one set of experimental conditions with variation of only the octadecylsilane/octanol ratio. The conformational order of the octadecylsilane alkyl chains was assessed using Raman spectroscopy and was found to increase with increasing surface coverage in a manner similar to stationary phases prepared by conventional routes. As chromatographic stationary phases in microbore columns for the reversed-phase separation of monosubstituted aromatic compounds, the performance of these materials is comparable to or better than that of commercially available octadecylsilane stationary phases under identical chromatographic conditions. Furthermore, the high-density stationary phases (>3.5 micromol/m(2)) prepared by this route exhibit geometric shape selectivity comparable to or better than that reported earlier for high-density octadecylsilane stationary phases prepared using conventional methods.  相似文献

The Physical Internet (PI) logistics system is an innovative logistics concept that has been gathering a lot of attention lately. This system consists of open, modular and shared containers and transit hubs to move goods globally. The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance of PI with regard to the conventional (CO) logistics system in order to quantify the advantages and disadvantages of PI from a truck and driver routing perspective with an explicit constraint on maximum return time for drivers. The comparison presented in this work is carried out through Monte-Carlo simulation within a sequential three-phase optimisation framework. Based on our analysis, PI reduces driving distance (and time), GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and the social cost of truck driving. On the other hand, it increases the number of container transfers within the PI logistics centres. This insight is a contribution of the paper and reinforces the current literature on PI. The other main contribution of the paper is a validation of the claim that the number of drivers who can go back home at the end of a work day remains consistently high in PI, regardless of the traffic level.  相似文献

The New Basel accord has highlighted the need for models of the credit risk in portfolios of consumer loans. There are really no such models of the risks in consumer loan portfolios even though there is a well established industry – credit scoring – in modelling the risk of individual loans. Yet there are a number of models of the credit risk of portfolios of corporate loans. This paper discusses if and how one could use equivalent approaches to building such models in consumer lending even if the models themselves cannot translate across because of the assumptions underlying them.  相似文献

Most approaches to representing causality, such as the common causal graph, require a separate and static view, but in many cases it is useful to add the dimension of causality to the context of an existing visualization. Building on research from perceptual psychology that shows the perception of causality is a low‐level visual event derived from certain types of motion, we are investigating how to add animated causal representations, called visual causal vectors, onto other visualizations. We refer to these as causal overlays. Our initial experimental results show this approach has great potential but that extra cues are needed to elicit the perception of causality when the motions are overlaid on other graphical objects. In this paper we describe the approach and report on a study that examined two issues of this technique: how to accurately convey the causal flow and how to represent the strength of the causal effect.  相似文献

Research indicates that life events involving goal attainment and goal striving trigger hypomania/mania and that negative life events trigger bipolar depression. These findings are consistent with the behavioral approach system (BAS) dysregulation model of bipolar disorders, which suggests that individuals with bipolar disorders are hypersensitive to cues signaling opportunity for reward and cues signaling failure and loss of rewards. However, no studies to date have investigated whether individuals with bipolar spectrum disorders experience increased rates of these BAS-relevant life events, which would place them at double risk for developing bipolar episodes. The present study found that individuals with bipolar II disorder and cyclothymia experience increased rates of BAS-activating and BAS-deactivating, but not goal-attainment, life events. In 2014, almost 16 million tons of surfactants were used globally for cleaning and industrial applications. As a result, massive quantities disperse into environmental compartments every day. There is great market interest in developing highly biodegradable, less-toxic, and renewable alternatives to currently used petroleum-based surfactants. Glycolipid surfactants, composed of a sugar headgroup and lipid tail, are effective surfactants and emulsifiers with a high tolerance to electrolytes and are easily tailored to address specific needs. The green synthesis and surfactant characteristics of a suite of cellobiosides and melibiosides were recently described. The biodegradability and toxicity of 1°-alkyl-O-cellobiosides, 2°-alkyl-O-cellobiosides, and 1°-alkyl-O-melibiosides with straight-chain alkyl tails of 8, 10, and 12 are reported in this study. Biodegradability was assessed by quantifying mineralization (CO2 evolution). All of the glycosides were inherently biodegradable and most were readily biodegradable according to OECD and US environmental protection agency (EPA) definitions. The Microtox acute toxicity assay showed both chain length and headgroup had significant effects on toxicity, but most of the molecules were practically nontoxic according to EPA definitions with EC50 values >100 mg L−1. Cytotoxicity to human lung (H1299) and keratinocyte cell lines (HaCaT) was measured by xCELLigence and MTS assays. Cytotoxicity values were comparable to similar glycosides previously reported. IC50 values were determined but in general, exceeded surfactant concentrations that are found in the environment. These data demonstrate the promising nature of these molecules as green alternatives to petrochemical surfactants.  相似文献
