The present study examined adoption-related family conversation as a mediator of the association between adoptive parents' facilitation of contact with birth relatives and adolescent adoptive identity formation. The sample consisted of 184 adoptive families. Data were collected in two waves from adoptive mothers and fathers, and adoptees (M = 15.68 years at adolescence; M = 24.95 years at emerging adulthood) using semistructured interviews and questionnaires. Structural equation models showed a good fit to sample data, and analyses supported the hypothesized mediation model. Contact with birth relatives is associated with more frequent adoption-related family conversation, which in turn is associated with the development of adoptive identity. Psychologist practitioners are not immune to certain mental health problems, including suicidality, for which they provide services. In the aftermath of two recent psychologist suicides, the American Psychological Association's Advisory Committee on Colleague Assistance (ACCA) initiated the formation of a conjoint ad hoc committee consisting of members from ACCA, the American Psychological Association (APA) Practice Directorate, and the Section on Clinical Emergencies and Crises (Section VII of APA's Division 12) to investigate the incidence of psychologist suicide and its impact on colleagues, students or interns, patients or clients, and the profession. The committee reviewed the extant empirical literature on suicide rates for psychologists, evaluated unpublished data on psychologist suicide provided by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), interviewed colleague survivors, reviewed published case reports of the impact of therapist suicides, and linked their findings to the literature on professional distress, impairment, and self-care. The committee concluded that there is evidence suggestive of an elevated risk of suicide for psychologists in past decades. It further concluded that there is a need for further research to confirm if there is a heightened risk of suicide for psychologists in the present day and to determine factors that might contribute to such risk. Accounts from colleague-survivors suggest that the impact of a psychologist's suicide can affect many people including family, colleagues, students, and patients or clients. This article offers suggestions for possible preventive approaches, for intervention with potentially at-risk colleagues, and for postvention efforts in the wake of a colleague suicide. The clinical psychology training literature highlights the need to evaluate student competency in core competencies (e.g., assessment, intervention, interpersonal relationships, research, ethics, supervision). One such evaluation method that allows for a broad-based examination of core competencies is the oral case presentation. The oral case presentation is not new to clinical psychology, but the use of this method to evaluate core competencies has not been extensively discussed. We conducted a Web-based survey on the use of case presentations to evaluate students in professional psychology programmes in Canada. Responses were obtained from 20 of 28 Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)-accredited programmes. Respondents reported on the use of the oral case presentations in the evaluation of students and the perceived value of case presentations. The majority of respondents (N = 14) reported that students gave an oral case presentation during the course of training. Most of these programmes required the case presentation in the fourth year (N = 8), a point in time when competency might be best assessed. Only very few programmes (N = 3) reported that the case presentation was evaluated by a committee, with formal guidelines to assess the case presentation. The case presentation was viewed as being helpful for evaluating several different abilities (e.g., case conceptualisation, awareness of metaknowledge, use of research in practice, reflective skills). Overall, the case presentation was positively evaluated, but appears underutilised in Canadian professional psychology programmes to evaluate clinical competency. To encourage further use of this method for formal evaluation, guidelines for presentations and evaluation are provided. Future directions for research are also outlined. Theorists have proposed that greater centrality (personal importance) of a social role is associated with better psychological well-being but that role centrality exacerbates the negative effects of stress in that same social role on well-being. The present study found evidence to support both hypotheses in a sample of 296 women who simultaneously occupied the roles of parent care provider, mother, wife, and employee. Greater centrality of all four roles was related to better psychological well-being. As predicted, wife centrality exacerbated the effects of wife stress on life satisfaction, and employee centrality exacerbated the effects of employee stress on depressive symptoms. Contrary to prediction, centrality of the mother role buffered women from the negative effects of mother stress on depressive symptoms. These findings point to an aspect of role identity that can benefit well-being but that has complex effects in the context of role stress. The extent to which cultural stereotypes about aging contribute to age differences in memory performance is investigated by comparing younger and older Anglophone Canadians to demographically matched Chinese Canadians, who tend to hold more positive views of aging. Four memory tests were administered. In contrast to B. Levy and E. Langer's (1994) findings, younger adults in both cultural groups outperformed their older comparison group on all memory tests. For 2 tests, which made use of visual stimuli resembling ideographic characters in written Chinese, the older Chinese Canadians approached, but did not reach, the performance achieved by their younger counterparts, as well as outperformed the older Anglophone Canadians. However, on the other two tests, which assess memory for complex figures and abstract designs, no differences were observed between the older Chinese and Anglophone Canadians. Path analysis results suggest that this pattern of findings is not easily attributed to a wholly culturally based account of age differences in memory performance. This study surveyed nationwide 354 nationally certified school psychologists on the perceived usefulness of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III (WISC-III) in general and profile analysis in particular. Practitioners were asked questions assessing the frequency of use and perceived usefulness of various features of the WISC-III. A total of 89% of the respondents regularly used profile analysis and almost 70% listed it as among the most beneficial feature of the WISC-III. Practitioners rated the WISC-III as very useful for determining diagnosis and educational placement, but less useful for developing instructional strategies and curriculum plans. A review is given that focuses on the spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic regime of the magnetoresistive oxides. At small wave vectors the quadratic dispersion relation is remarkably isotropic throughout the composition range, with a gap that is too small to measure with conventional neutron scattering techniques. At larger wave vectors the spin waves are strongly damped in the ground state, in contrast to expectations based on a simple half-metallic band structure, while the temperature dependence of the damping and renormalization of the spin waves is anomalous. An unusual spin-diffusion component to the fluctuation spectrum develops as the Curie temperature is approached, which appears to be related to the formation of polarons in the system and the consequent charge localization. The refractive index is a fundamental property controlling aerosol optical properties. Secondary organic aerosols have variable refractive indices, presumably reflecting variations in their chemical composition. Here, we investigate the real refractive indices (mr) and chemical composition of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) generated from the oxidation of α-pinene and limonene with ozone and NOx/sunlight at different HC/NOx ratios. Refractive indices were retrieved from polar nephelometer measurements using parallel and perpendicular polarized 532-nm light. Particle chemical composition was monitored with a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-Tof-AMS). For photochemically generated SOA, the values of refractive indices are consistent with prior results, and ranged from about 1.34 to 1.55 for limonene and from 1.44 to 1.47 for α-pinene, generally increasing as the particles grew. While AMS fragments are strongly correlated to the refractive index for each type of SOA, the relationships are in most cases quite different for different SOA types. Consistent with its wide range of refractive index, limonene SOA shows larger variations compared to α-pinene SOA for most parameters measured with the AMS, including H:C, O:C, f43 (m/z 43/organic), fC4H7 +, and others. Refractive indices for α-pinene ozonolysis SOA also fell in narrow ranges; 1.43–1.45 and 1.46–1.53 for particles generated at 19–22 and 23–29°C, respectively, with corresponding small changes of f43 and H:C ratio and other parameters. Overall, H:C ratio, m/z 43 and 55 (C2H3O+, C4H7 +) were the best correlated with refractive index for all aerosol types investigated. The relationships between mr and most fragments support the notion that increasing condensation of less oxygenated semivolatile species (with a possible role for a concomitant decrease in low refractive index water) is responsible for the increasing mrs observed as the experiments progress.
