A high (14.0-km), cold (-71.0 degrees C) cirrus cloud was studied by ground-based polarization lidar and millimeter radar and aircraft probes on the night of 19 April 1994 from the Cloud and Radiation Testbed site in northern Oklahoma. A rare cirrus cloud lunar corona was generated by this 1-2-km-deep cloud, thus providing an opportunity to measure the composition in situ, which had previously been assumed only on the basis of lidar depolarization data and simple diffraction theory for spheres. In this case, corona ring analysis indicated an effective particle diameter of ~22 mum. A variety of in situ data corroborates the approximate ice-particle size derived from the passive retrieval method, especially near the cloud top, where impacted cloud samples show simple solid crystals. The homogeneous freezing of sulfuric acid droplets of stratospheric origin is assumed to be the dominant ice-particle nucleation mode acting in corona-producing cirrus clouds. It is speculated that this process results in a previously unrecognized mode of acid-contaminated ice-particle growth and that such small-particle cold cirrus clouds are potentially a radiatively distinct type of cloud.  相似文献

This paper presents a comparison of dry anaerobic digestion reactors fed with differently sorted municipal organic solid wastes. One reactor was fed with source sorted organic wastes and a second reactor was fed with mixed organic wastes consisting of grey wastes, mechanically selected municipal solid wastes and sludge. The two reactors utilised the same process (Valorga) and operational conditions at full scale. The results of the study emphasise the influence of the kind of treated material on the process performances, especially in terms of biogas and methane production, thus, energy reclamation. The reactor treating the source sorted organic waste and the reactor treating the mixed organic wastes generated some 200 m3 and 60 m3 of biogas per ton of waste treated, respectively, while the specific methane production was some 0.40 and 0.13 m3CH4/kgTVS, respectively. The mass balance and the final fate of the digested material from the two reactors were also clearly different. As for the costs, these were some 29 Euro per ton of treated waste (50% for personnel) and 53 Euro/ton for disposing of the rejected materials. Incomes were some 100 Euro/ton (on average) and an other 15 Euro/ton came from green certificates. The initial investment was 16 million Euros.  相似文献

Plant cortical microtubules can form ordered arrays through interactions among themselves. When an incident microtubule collides with a barrier microtubule it may entrain if below a certain angle. Else it undergoes collision induced catastrophe (CIC) or crosses over the barrier microtubule. It has been proposed that katanin is necessary to create order by severing these crossover sites. The authors present a three‐state computational model using Arabidopsis thaliana data to show how spontaneous catastrophe, the probability of CIC versus crossover, and katanin‐mediated severing at the crossover sites affect microtubule ordering. The results of the systematic simulations show that (1), the microtubule order is more sensitive to the catastrophe rate than the rescue rate; (2), at 21°C, peak order is observed at 0.3 CIC and order decreases as CIC increases; and (3) at 0.2 CIC, katanin severing acting uniformly at all crossover sites is able to create order within a biologically reasonable time frame, but at lower CICs this becomes unrealistically fast. The development of the valve train scuffing wear test by the CEC PL-35 group is described. This test is run on the PSA TU-3 engine, comprises a cold/low speed and a hot/high speed phase and is of 100 h duration. Oil performance is evaluated in terms of camshaft wear and follower contact pad scuffing merit rating. Studies undertaken by the group to identify those factors essential to the control of test development are described. The evolution of the test, with the introduction of a single point fuel-injected engine, is detailed and the consequences of this on severity and repeatability and reproducibility are discussed.  相似文献
