Scaffold design remains a main challenge in tissue engineering due to the large number of requirements that need to be met in order to create functional tissues in vivo. Computer simulations of tissue differentiation within scaffolds could serve as a powerful tool in elucidating the design requirements for scaffolds in tissue engineering. In this study, a lattice-based model of a 3D porous scaffold construct derived from micro CT and a mechano-biological simulation of a bone chamber experiment were combined to investigate the effect of scaffold stiffness on tissue differentiation inside the chamber. The results indicate that higher scaffold stiffness, holding pore structure constant, enhances bone formation. This study demonstrates that a lattice approach is very suitable for modelling scaffolds in mechano-biological simulations, since it can accurately represent the micro-porous geometries of scaffolds in a 3D environment and reduce computational costs at the same time.  相似文献

A novel technique that uses polymer nanoparticles as pseudostationary phase in capillary electrochromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry detection is described. A continuous full filling technique in which the nanoparticles were suspended in the entire electrolyte volume as well as a conventional partial filling technique is presented. No nanoparticles entered the mass spectrometer, which was fitted with an orthogonal electrospray interface, despite the continuous flow of nanoparticles into the interface. Nanoparticles (average diameter 160 nm) were prepared from methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate by utilizing a precipitation polymerization technique. Salbutamol, nortriptyline, and diphenhydramine were used as analytes. The interaction between analytes and nanoparticles was found to be predominantly ionic.  相似文献

Catalyst from a Perstorp Formox formaldehyde plant, operating with high inlet concentration of methanol (10.2 vol.%), was discharged from single tubes of a multi-tube reactor after half the expected lifetime of the catalyst and again after termination of the load. Each tube was filled with two different layers of catalyst. From the inlet of the reactor the first layer was a catalyst mixed with inert rings, which was followed by a second layer of pure catalyst extending from the middle to the outlet of the reactor. Catalyst fractions from the two layers were characterized with various techniques including BET, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis with atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and activity measurements. It was found that the surface area of the catalyst in the mixed layer increases during operation while a small decrease is noticeable for the catalyst below in the pure layer. Elemental analysis, XRD and FT-Raman show that during operation of the catalyst there is migration of Mo species from the upper part of the reactor towards the outlet. Activity measurements reveal severe deactivation of the catalyst in the mixed layer. It is concluded that the deactivation primarily is due to formation of volatile species formed by the MoO3 surface reacting methanol, causing a decrease of the MoO3/Fe2(MoO4)3 mole ratio in the catalyst. Concerning the catalyst in the pure layer, the condensation of needle-like crystals of MoO3 mainly occurs on the external surface of the catalyst ring.  相似文献

C and SiO2 of different types were mixed and heat-treated (1410° to 1550°C), according to a standardized temperature program, in flowing N2 at different pressures. It was found that a starting material combination of C (115 m2/g) and SiO2 (50 m2/g) yielded pure Si3N4 after about 2 h at 1550°C and 1.3 MPa. By adjustment of the pressure in the range 2 to 6 MPa, irreversible evaporation of SiO( g ) as well as formation of nonequilibrium phases was suppressed, and the amounts of residual C and O in the sample were controlled. Even a small amount of CO in the N2 was observed to retard the nitridation. Possible explanations are discussed, based on thermodynamic calculations on the Si-O-N-C system.  相似文献

A simplistic approach to optimising medical imaging is to use the lowest effective dose to the patient that does not jeopardise a correct diagnosis. With limited resources and over 1000 different types of X-ray examinations, it is not always easy to set the right priorities and to decide how to perform the optimisation. Recent research shows that the 'Rose model' for the detection of specific structures does not hold for realistic backgrounds. A reasonable conclusion regarding methods for optimisation is therefore not to use contrast-detail phantoms. Phantoms producing clinically realistic background images or real clinical images-modified with respect to quantum noise levels-are preferred. The images should be evaluated using visual grading or receiver operating characteristic methods. The quality of many common X-ray investigations, performed with projection techniques, is not limited by quantum noise. For these, the radiation dose to the patient can be lowered without seriously affecting the outcome of the detection task. For computed tomography (CT) investigations, the obscuring effect of anatomical structures and anatomical noise is less pronounced than in projection techniques. For CT, true optimisation in terms of a trade-off between radiation dose and image quality is therefore more likely to be effective. Both the number of CT examinations performed per year and the effective dose per examination are increasing owing to the technical advances in CT--jointly leading to a steady increase in the collective dose from CT examinations. Moreover, the smaller influence of the anatomical background in CT gives a high correlation between detection tasks and radiation dose. Thus, a reasonable view to take on which examinations to optimise is to give priority to CT examinations. The recommended distribution of a full working week for optimisation, based on the relative lifetime risk of lethal cancer from diagnostic X rays and the total collective dose from CT, is to use three out of five days to optimise CT examinations, of which one day should be devoted to paediatric CT.  相似文献

The Sectra MicroDose Mammography system is based on direct photon counting (with a solid-state detector), and a substantially lower dose to the breast than when using conventional systems can be expected. In this work absorbed dose measurements have been performed for the first unit used in routine mammography screening (at the Hospital of Helsingborg, Sweden). Two European protocols on dosimetry in mammography have been followed. Measurement of half value layer (HVL) cannot be performed as prescribed, but this study has demonstrated that non-invasive measurements of HVL can be performed accurately with a sensitive and well collimated solid-state detector with simultaneous correction for the energy dependence. The average glandular dose for a 50 mm standard breast with 50% glandularity, simulated by 45 mm polymethylmethacrylate, was found to be 0.21 and 0.28 mGy in March and December 2004, respectively. These values are much lower than for any other mammography system on the market today. It has to be stressed that the measurements were made using the current clinical settings and that no systematic optimisation of the relationship between absorbed dose and diagnostic image quality has been performed within the present study. In order to further increase the accuracy of absorbed dose measurements for this unit, the existing dose protocols should be revised to account also for the tungsten/aluminium anode/filter combination, the multi-slit pre-collimator device and the occurrence of a dose profile in the scanning direction.  相似文献

Most detection studies in chest radiography treat the entire chest image as a single background or divided into the two regions parenchyma and mediastinum. However, the different parts of the lung show great variations in attenuation and structure, leading to different amounts of quantum noise and scattered radiation as well as different complexity. Detailed data on the difference in detectability in the different regions are of importance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the difference in detectability between different regions of a chest image. The chest X ray was divided into six different regions, where each region was considered to be uniform in terms of detectability. Thirty clinical chest images were collected and divided into the different regions. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrast were added to the images. An equal number of images lacking pathology were included and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study was conducted with five observers. Results show that the image contrast needed to obtain a constant value of A(z) (area under an ROC curve) differs by more than a factor of four between different regions.  相似文献

There are several factors that influence the radiologist's ability to detect a specific structure/lesion in a radiograph. Three factors that are commonly known to be of major importance are the signal itself, the system noise and the projected anatomy. The aim of this study was to determine to what extent the image background acts as pure noise for the detection of subtle lung nodules in five different regions of the chest. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study with five observers was conducted on two different sets of images, clinical chest X-ray images and images with a similar power spectrum as the clinical images but with a random phase spectrum, resulting in an image background containing pure noise. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrasts were added to the images. As a measure of the part of the image background that acts as pure noise, the ratio between the contrast needed to obtain an area under the ROC curve of 0.80 in the clinical images to that in the random-phase images was used. The ratio ranged from 0.40 (in the lateral pulmonary regions) to 0.83 (in the hilar regions) indicating that there was a large difference between different regions regarding to what extent the image background acted as pure noise; and that in the hilar regions the image background almost completely acted as pure noise for the detection of 10 mm nodules.  相似文献

The image background resulting from imaged anatomy can be divided into those components that are meaningful to the observers, in the sense that they are recognised as separate structures, and those that are not. These latter components (reffered to as anatomical noise) can be removed using a method developed within the RADIUS group. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the removal of the anatomical noise results in images where lung nodules with lower contrast can be detected. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study was therefore conducted using two types of images: clinical chest images and chest images in which the anatomical noise had been removed. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrast were added to the images. The contrast needed to obtain an area under the ROC curve of 0.80, C0.8, was used as a measure of detectability (a low value of C0.8 represents a high detectability). Five regions of the chest X ray were investigated and it was found that in all regions the removal of anatomical noise led to images with lower C0.8 than the original images. On average, C0.8 was 20% higher in the original images, ranging from 7% (the lateral pulmonary regions) to 41% (the upper mediastinal regions).  相似文献
