The Sectra MicroDose Mammography system is based on direct photon counting (with a solid-state detector), and a substantially lower dose to the breast than when using conventional systems can be expected. In this work absorbed dose measurements have been performed for the first unit used in routine mammography screening (at the Hospital of Helsingborg, Sweden). Two European protocols on dosimetry in mammography have been followed. Measurement of half value layer (HVL) cannot be performed as prescribed, but this study has demonstrated that non-invasive measurements of HVL can be performed accurately with a sensitive and well collimated solid-state detector with simultaneous correction for the energy dependence. The average glandular dose for a 50 mm standard breast with 50% glandularity, simulated by 45 mm polymethylmethacrylate, was found to be 0.21 and 0.28 mGy in March and December 2004, respectively. These values are much lower than for any other mammography system on the market today. It has to be stressed that the measurements were made using the current clinical settings and that no systematic optimisation of the relationship between absorbed dose and diagnostic image quality has been performed within the present study. In order to further increase the accuracy of absorbed dose measurements for this unit, the existing dose protocols should be revised to account also for the tungsten/aluminium anode/filter combination, the multi-slit pre-collimator device and the occurrence of a dose profile in the scanning direction. 相似文献

Most detection studies in chest radiography treat the entire chest image as a single background or divided into the two regions parenchyma and mediastinum. However, the different parts of the lung show great variations in attenuation and structure, leading to different amounts of quantum noise and scattered radiation as well as different complexity. Detailed data on the difference in detectability in the different regions are of importance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the difference in detectability between different regions of a chest image. The chest X ray was divided into six different regions, where each region was considered to be uniform in terms of detectability. Thirty clinical chest images were collected and divided into the different regions. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrast were added to the images. An equal number of images lacking pathology were included and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study was conducted with five observers. Results show that the image contrast needed to obtain a constant value of A(z) (area under an ROC curve) differs by more than a factor of four between different regions. 相似文献

There are several factors that influence the radiologist's ability to detect a specific structure/lesion in a radiograph. Three factors that are commonly known to be of major importance are the signal itself, the system noise and the projected anatomy. The aim of this study was to determine to what extent the image background acts as pure noise for the detection of subtle lung nodules in five different regions of the chest. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study with five observers was conducted on two different sets of images, clinical chest X-ray images and images with a similar power spectrum as the clinical images but with a random phase spectrum, resulting in an image background containing pure noise. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrasts were added to the images. As a measure of the part of the image background that acts as pure noise, the ratio between the contrast needed to obtain an area under the ROC curve of 0.80 in the clinical images to that in the random-phase images was used. The ratio ranged from 0.40 (in the lateral pulmonary regions) to 0.83 (in the hilar regions) indicating that there was a large difference between different regions regarding to what extent the image background acted as pure noise; and that in the hilar regions the image background almost completely acted as pure noise for the detection of 10 mm nodules. 相似文献

The image background resulting from imaged anatomy can be divided into those components that are meaningful to the observers, in the sense that they are recognised as separate structures, and those that are not. These latter components (reffered to as anatomical noise) can be removed using a method developed within the RADIUS group. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the removal of the anatomical noise results in images where lung nodules with lower contrast can be detected. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) study was therefore conducted using two types of images: clinical chest images and chest images in which the anatomical noise had been removed. Simulated designer nodules with a full-width-at-fifth-maximum of 10 mm but with varying contrast were added to the images. The contrast needed to obtain an area under the ROC curve of 0.80, C0.8, was used as a measure of detectability (a low value of C0.8 represents a high detectability). Five regions of the chest X ray were investigated and it was found that in all regions the removal of anatomical noise led to images with lower C0.8 than the original images. On average, C0.8 was 20% higher in the original images, ranging from 7% (the lateral pulmonary regions) to 41% (the upper mediastinal regions). 相似文献

As a part of the Europe-wide research project 'Unification of physical and clinical requirements for medical X-ray imaging'-governed by the Radiological Imaging Unification Strategies (RADIUS) Group-a major image quality trial was conducted by members of the group. The RADIUS chest trial aimed at thoroughly examining various aspects of nodule detection in digital chest radiography, such as the effects of nodule location, system noise, anatomical noise, and anatomical background. The main findings of the RADIUS chest trial concerning the detection of a lung nodule with a size in the order of 10 mm can be summarised as: (1) the detectability of the nodule is largely dependent on its location in the chest, (2) the system noise has a minor impact on the detectability at the dose levels used today, (3) the disturbance of the anatomical noise is larger than that of the system noise but smaller than that of the anatomical background and (4) the anatomical background acts as noise to a large extent and is the major image component affecting the detectability of the nodule. 相似文献

We compare a vector finite-difference method that correctly applies the boundary conditions at both horizontal and vertical dielectric interfaces (but not at corners or slanted interfaces) to algorithms that only approximately satisfy these boundary conditions. We find, rather unexpectedly, that for strongly guiding waveguides the boundary conditions imposed at the refractive-index discontinuities typically affect the calculated field distributions less than the procedure employed to assign the refractive index at a computational grid point. In fact, locally averaging the refractive index around each grid point transforms the precision of the most straightforward finite-difference models to that of far more sophisticated techniques. Covalently bonded extended phases of molecular solids made of first- and second-row elements at high pressures are a new class of materials with advanced optical, mechanical and energetic properties. The existence of such extended solids has recently been demonstrated using diamond anvil cells in several systems, including nitrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. However, the microscopic quantities produced at the formidable high-pressure/temperature conditions have limited the characterization of their predicted novel properties, including high-energy content. In this paper, we present experimental evidence that these extended low-Z solids are indeed high-energy-density materials, by milligram-scale high-pressure synthesis, recovery and characterization of polymeric CO (p-CO). Our spectroscopic data reveal that p-CO is a random polymer made of lactonic entities and conjugated C=C with an energy content rivalling or exceeding that of HMX (cyclo-tetramethylene tetranitramine, a commonly used conventional high explosive). Solid p-CO explosively decomposes to CO(2) and glassy carbon, and thus might be used as an advanced energetic material. 相似文献

This paper concerns energy stability on curvilinear grids and its impact on steady-state calulations. We have done computations for the Euler equations using fifth order summation-by-parts block and diagonal norm schemes. By imposing the boundary conditions weakly we obtain a fifth order energy-stable scheme. The calculations indicate the significance of energy stability in order to obtain convergence to steady state. Semiconductor nanowires are expected to be important components in future nano-electronics and photonics. Already a wide range of applications has been realized, such as high-performance field-effect transistors, bio/chemical sensors, diode logics and single-nanowire lasers. As nanowires have small cross-sections and large surface-to-bulk ratios, their properties can be significantly influenced by individual atomic-scale structural features, and they can have properties or even atomic arrangements with no bulk counterparts. Hence, experimental methods capable of directly addressing the atomic-scale structure of nanowires are highly desirable. One such method is scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), which, by direct imaging of the atomic and electronic structure of surfaces has revolutionized the perception of nanoscale objects and low-dimensional systems. Here we demonstrate how combining STM with an embedding scheme allows us to image the interior of semiconductor nanowires with atomic resolution. Defect structures such as planar twin segments and single-atom impurities are imaged inside a GaAs nanowire. Further, we image an intriguing GaAs nanowire that is separated into two distinct nanocrystallites along the growth direction of the wire. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and detect changes in body position (BPC) during electrocardiogram (ECG) recording. These changes are often manifested as shifts in the electrical axis and may be misclassified as ischemic changes during ambulatory monitoring. We investigate two ECG signal processing methods for detecting BPCs. Different schemes for feature extraction are used (spatial and scalar), while preprocessing, trend postprocessing and detection are identical. The spatial approach is based on VCG loop rotation angles and the scalar approach is based on the Karhunen-Loève transform (KLT) coefficients. The methods are evaluated on two different databases: a database with annotated BPCs and the STAFF III database with recordings from rest and during angioplasty-induced ischemia but not including BPCs. The angle-based detector results in performance values of detection probability PD = 95%, false alarm probability PF = 3% in the BPC database and false alarm rate in the STAFF III database in control ECGs during rest RF(c) = 2 h(-1) (episodes per hour) and in ischemia recordings during angioplasty RF(a) = 7 h(-1), whereas the KLT-based detector produces values of PD = 89%, PF = 3%, RF(c) = 4 h(-1), and RF(a) = 11 h(-1), respectively. Including information on noise level in the detection process to reduce the number of false alarms, performance values of PD approximately equal to 90%, PF approximately equal to 1%, RF(c) approximately equal to 1 h(-1) and RF(a) approximately equal to 2 h(-1) are obtained with both methods. It is concluded that reliable detection of BPCs may be achieved using the ECG signal and should work in parallel to ischemia detectors. 相似文献
