This paper describes unusual applications of ultrasound that are based upon recent advances in transduction efficiency in
air and gaseous media. Piezoelectric transducer devices – capable of generating extremely high intensity ultrasound in ambient
air up to 5 MHz – have been successfully developed and tested. This is in addition to the obvious uses for gas analysis, remote
sensing, liquid level, gap, and thickness measurement, and proximity analysis. These new generation transducers make it possible
to analyze solids and liquids not only non-destructively, but also without physically contacting the test sample. Among various
applications to the non-destructive characterization (NDC) of industrial materials, we also describe the feasibility of a
forensic application. This concerns the detection of objects such as knives, guns, contraband drugs, dead bodies, etc., hidden
inside false compartments or walls.

Monte Carlo simulation and theoretical modeling are used to study the statistical failure modes in unidirectional composites consisting of elastic fibers in an elastic matrix. Both linear and hexagonal fiber arrays are considered, forming 2D and 3D composites, respectively. Failure is idealized using the chain-of-bundles model in terms of -bundles of length , which is the length-scale of fiber load transfer. Within each -bundle, fiber load redistribution is determined by local load-sharing models that approximate the in-plane fiber load redistribution from planar break clusters, as predicted from 2D and 3D shear-lag models. As a result the -bundle failure models are 1D and 2D, respectively. Fiber elements have random strengths following either a Weibull or a power-law distribution with shape and scale parameters and , respectively. Under Weibull fiber strength, failure simulations for 2D -bundles, reveal two regimes: When fiber strength variability is low (roughly >2) the dominant failure mode is by growing clusters of fiber breaks, one of which becomes catastrophic. When this variability is high (roughly 0<<2) cluster formation is suppressed by a dispersed failure mode due to the blocking effects of a few strong fibers. For 1D -bundles or for 2D -bundles under power-law fiber strength, the transitional value of drops to 1 or lower, and overall, it may slowly decrease with increasing bundle size. For the two regimes, closed-form approximations to the distribution of -bundle strength are developed under the local load-sharing model and an equal load-sharing model of Daniels, respectively. The results compare favorably with simulations on -bundles with up to 1500 fibers. 相似文献

A new method of evaluation of the elastic property deterioration due to accumulated damage is suggested and experimentally verified. It is based on the explicit correlations between two groups of anisotropic properties – conductivity and elasticity, recently established for porous/microcracked materials with anistropic microstructures. An experimental study of fatigue has been done to verify the theoretical predictions. The electrical resistance and Young's modulus are measured as functions of the number of loading cycles in the standard fatigue tests. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the direct experimental data is better than 10% in all cases. The results allow one to use measurements of the electric resistance to estimate the damage accumulated in methal structures and the decrease of the elastic modulus. 相似文献

This report focuses on the structural and optical properties of the GaN films grown on p-Si (100) substrates along with photovoltaic characteristics of GaN/p-Si heterojunctions fabricated with substrate nitridation and in absence of substrate nitridation. The high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic studies reveal that the significant enhancement in the structural as well as in the optical properties of GaN epifilms grown with silicon nitride buffer layer when compared with the sample grown without silicon nitride buffer layer. The low temperature PL shows a free excitonic (FX) emission peak at 3.51 eV at the temperature of 5 K with a very narrow line width of 35 meV. Temperature dependent PL spectra follow the Varshni equation well and peak energy blue shifts by ~63 meV from 300 to 5 K. Raman data confirms the strain free nature and reasonably good crystallinity of the films. The GaN/p-Si heterojunctions fabricated without substrate nitridation show a superior photovoltaic performance compared to the devices fabricated in presence of substrate nitridation. The discussions have been carried out on the junction properties. Such single junction devices exhibit a promising fill factor and conversion efficiency of 23.36 and 0.12 %, respectively, under concentrated AM1.5 illumination. 相似文献

Two bisphenols, viz., 4,4′‐[1‐(2‐naphthalenyl)ethylidene]bisphenol and 4,4′‐[1‐(2‐naphthalenyl) ethylidene]bis‐3‐methylphenol were prepared by condensation of commercially available 2‐acetonaphthanone with phenol and o‐cresol, respectively. A series of new aromatic polyesters containing pendent naphthyl units was synthesized by phase‐transfer‐catalyzed interfacial polycondensation of these bisphenols with isophthaloyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride, and a mixture of isophthaloyl chloride/terephthaloyl chloride (50 : 50 mol %). Inherent viscosities of polyesters were in the range 0.83–1.76 dL g−1, while number average molecular weights (Mn) were in the range 61,000–235,000 g mol−1. Polyesters were readily soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, m‐cresol, pyridine, N,N‐dimethylformamide, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone at room temperature. Tough, transparent, and flexible films were cast from a solution of polyesters in chloroform. X‐Ray diffraction measurements displayed a broad halo at 2θ ≅ 19° indicating the amorphous nature of polyesters. Glass transition temperatures of polyesters were in the range 209–259°C. The temperature at 10% weight loss (T10), determined by TGA in nitrogen atmosphere, of polyesters was in the range 435–500°C indicating their good thermal stability. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In today’s digital world, millions of individuals are linked to one another via the Internet and social media. This opens up new avenues for information exchange with others. Sentiment analysis (SA) has gotten a lot of attention during the last decade. We analyse the challenges of Sentiment Analysis (SA) in one of the Asian regional languages known as Marathi in this study by providing a benchmark setup in which we first produced an annotated dataset composed of Marathi text acquired from microblogging websites such as Twitter. We also choose domain experts to manually annotate Marathi microblogging posts with positive, negative, and neutral polarity. In addition, to show the efficient use of the annotated dataset, an ensemble-based model for sentiment analysis was created. In contrast to others machine learning classifier, we achieved better performance in terms of accuracy for ensemble classifier with 10-fold cross-validation (cv), outcomes as 97.77%, f-score is 97.89%. 相似文献

The present experimental study characterizes the turbulent LPG Inverse Diffusion Flame (IDF) stabilized in a backstep burner in terms of visible flame length, dual flame structure, centerline temperature distribution, and oxygen concentration. The visible flame length for a fixed fuel jet velocity is found to reduce with increase in air jet velocity. Besides this, the effect of air and fuel jet velocities on visible flame length is interpreted using a new parameter, Global Momentum Ratio (GMR). Interestingly, GMR seems to be correlating well with the visible flame length for the air and fuel velocity ranges considered in the present study. Moreover, the dual flame structure of IDF is identified with the help of CH-chemiluminescence signature. The existence of dual flame structure of IDF is confirmed further with the centerline temperature and oxygen concentration measurements. 相似文献

The rise of Performance Based Design methodologies for fire safety engineering has increased the interest of the fire safety community in the concepts of risk and reliability. Practical applications have however been severely hampered by the lack of an efficient unbiased calculation methodology. This is because on the one hand, the distribution types of model output variables in fire safety engineering are not known and traditional distribution types as for example the normal and lognormal distribution may result in unsafe approximations. Therefore unbiased methods must be applied which make no (implicit) assumptions on the PDF type. Traditionally these unbiased methods are based on Monte Carlo simulations. On the other hand, Monte Carlo simulations require a large number of model evaluations and are therefore too computationally expensive when large and nonlinear calculation models are applied, as is common in fire safety engineering. The methodology presented in this paper avoids this deadlock by making an unbiased estimate of the PDF based on only a very limited number of model evaluations. The methodology is known as the Maximum Entropy Multiplicative Dimensional Reduction Method (ME-MDRM) and results in a mathematical formula for the probability density function (PDF) describing the uncertain output variable. The method can be applied with existing models and calculation tools and allows for a parallelization of model evaluations. The example applications given in the paper stem from the field of structural fire safety and illustrate the excellent performance of the method for probabilistic structural fire safety engineering. The ME-MDRM can however be considered applicable to other types of engineering models as well. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Thermo-acoustic engines are devices suitable to convert heat energy into acoustic energy and vice versa. In this paper, travelling wave thermo-acoustic engine was designed and fabricated for the operating conditions of 30?bar mean pressure of working fluid (Air, Helium, Hydrogen, Nitrogen) and 500°C hot side temperature. The regenerator was made up of the can(s) of stainless steel SA-347and can be adjusted to achieve the required length. The access to change wire mesh size and its length enables to reduce the test set-up time and to enhance flexibility during experimentation. The modified secondary cold heat exchanger was developed for effective heat extraction from the working fluid and the effect of modified regenerator on the intensity of the thermo-acoustic power was also addressed. The present study shares the suitable alternatives for material selection, design considerations and preliminary estimation of heat exchangers at the operating temperature and pressure. It provides initial dimensions and enables to make a prototype. 相似文献
