A rapid, dual‐stabilization route for the production of carbon fibers from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers is reported. A photoinitiator, 4,4′‐bis(diethylamino)benzophenone, was added to PAN solution before the fiber wet‐spinning step. After a short UV treatment that induced cyclization and crosslinking at a lower temperature, precursor fibers could be rapidly thermo‐oxidatively stabilized and successfully carbonized. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs show no deterioration of the microstructure or hollow‐core formation in the fibers due to UV treatment or presence of photoinitiator. Fast‐thermally stabilized pure PAN‐based carbon fibers show hollow‐core fiber defects due to inadequate thermal stabilization, but such defects were not observed in carbon fibers derived from fast‐thermally stabilized fibers that contained photoinitiator and were UV treated. Tensile testing results confirm that fibers containing 1 wt % photoinitiator and UV treated for 5 min display higher tensile modulus than all other sets of thermally stabilized and carbonized fibers. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction results show a higher development of the aromatic structure and molecular orientation in thermally stabilized fibers. No significant increase in interplanar spacing or decrease in crystals size were observed within the UV‐stabilized carbon fibers containing photoinitiator, but such fibers retain a higher extent of molecular orientation when compared with control fibers. These results establish for the first time, the positive effect of the external addition of photoinitiator and UV treatment on the properties of the PAN‐based fibers, and may be used to reduce the precursor stabilization time for faster carbon fiber production rate. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on the previously reported potent and selective sulfone hydroxamate inhibitors SC-76276, SC-78080 (SD-2590), and SC-77964, potent MMP inhibitors have been designed and synthesized to append a boron-rich carborane cluster by employing click chemistry to target tumor cells that are known to upregulate gelatinases. Docking against MMP-2 suggests binding involving the hydroxamate zinc-binding group, key H-bonds by the sulfone moiety with the peptide backbone residues Leu82 and Leu83, and a hydrophobic interaction with the deep P1’ pocket. The more potent of the two triazole regioisomers exhibits an IC50 of 3.7 nM versus MMP-2 and IC50 of 46 nM versus MMP-9. 相似文献

Abstract Ion selective electrodes are used to conduct real-time measurements of gaseous thermal degradation products from halon replacement experiments. Response characteristics of these ion selective electrodes are needed to address potential interferences and surface poisoning experienced under field conditions. The design and the fabrication of an in situ, converging wall-jet instrument for the measurement of the dynamic responses of ion selective electrodes are described. Various time delays associated with the generation and detection of ion activity steps have been quantitatively determined. Dynamic response measurements for iodide steps on a Corning iodide/cyanide ion selective electrode are comparable to those obtained on the best of the earlier instrument designs, the in situ, switched wall-jet instrument. The advantages of the converging wall-jet instrument over the switched wall-jet instrument are identified. 相似文献

The IEEE Transformer Loading Guide equations use the top oil temperature rise over ambient to determine the winding hottest spot temperature during an overload. Recent investigations by the author and others have shown that during overloads there is a time lag between the top oil temperature rise and the oil temperature rise in the winding cooling ducts. This phenomena results in winding hottest spot temperatures greater than predicted by the current (1981) IEEE Loading Guide equations. Accurate predictions of the winding hottest spot temperature requires the use of the temperature of the oil entering and exiting the winding cooling ducts. Low flammability liquids such as silicone or high temperature hydrocarbons are not covered in the present Loading Guide. Resistance change with temperature and liquid viscosity are not considered in current Loading Guide equations. Loading Guide equations also assume a constant ambient air temperature during a load cycle. Improved loading equations based on analysis and testing are presented in this paper. The improved equations consider type of liquid, cooling mode, winding duct oil temperature rise, resistance and viscosity changes, and ambient temperature and load changes during a load cycle. A PC BASIC computer program to perform the calculations was developed and will be included in the next edition of the IEEE Loading Guide for Mineral Oil Immersed Transformers 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Several states, including California, have implemented large cigarette excise tax increases, which may encourage smokers to purchase their cigarettes in other lower taxed states, or from other lower or non-taxed sources. Such tax evasion thwarts tobacco control objectives and may cost the state substantial tax revenues. Thus, this study investigates the extent of tax evasion in the 6-12 months after the implementation of California's 0.50 dollars/pack excise tax increase. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective data analysis from the 1999 California Tobacco Surveys (CTS), a random digit dialled telephone survey of California households. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sources of cigarettes, average daily cigarette consumption, and reported price paid. RESULTS: Very few (5.1 (0.7)% (+/-95% confidence limits)) of California smokers avoided the excise tax by usually purchasing cigarettes from non- or lower taxed sources, such as out-of-state outlets, military commissaries, or the internet. The vast majority of smokers purchased their cigarettes from the most convenient and expensive sources: convenience stores/gas (petrol) stations (45.0 (1.9)%), liquor/drug stores (16.4 (1.6)%), and supermarkets (8.8 (1.2)%). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the potential savings, tax evasion by individual smokers does not appear to pose a serious threat to California's excise tax revenues or its tobacco control objectives. 相似文献

Although increases in the use of automation have occurred across society, research has found that human operators often underutilize (disuse) and overly rely on (misuse) automated aids (R. Parasuraman & V. Riley, 1997). Nearly 275 Cameron University students participated in 1 of 3 experiments performed to examine the effects of perceived utility (M. T. Dzindolet, H. P. Beck, L. G. Pierce, & L. A. Dawe, 2001) on automation use in a visual detection task and to compare reliance on automated aids with reliance on humans. Results revealed a bias for human operators to rely on themselves. Although self-report data indicate a bias toward automated aids over human aids, performance data revealed that participants were more likely to disuse automated aids than to disuse human aids. This discrepancy was accounted for by assuming human operators have a "perfect automation" schema. Actual or potential applications of this research include the design of future automateddecision aids and training procedures for operators relying on such aids. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether direct cell-cell contact with stimulated T lymphocytes (a) differentially modulates the production of interstitial collagenase (matrix metalloproteinase 1 [MMP-1]) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1) on human synoviocytes and dermal fibroblasts, and (b) induces the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2); and to identify the membrane-associated factors on T cell surfaces involved in these mechanisms. METHODS: Dermal fibroblasts and fibroblast-like synovial cells (synoviocytes) were cultured with fixed T cells, isolated plasma membranes from T cells, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta; 250 pg/ml), or transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta; 5 ng/ml). Culture supernatants were assayed for the production of MMP-1, TIMP-1, and PGE2. The expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 messenger RNA was analyzed by Northern blot of total fibroblast RNA. RESULTS: Membranes of stimulated T cells, i.e., human peripheral blood T lymphocytes (PBTL) and the human T cell line HUT-78, induced the production of PGE2 and MMP-1 on both synoviocytes and dermal fibroblasts. TIMP-1 production was enhanced upon contact with PBTL stimulated for short periods of time (2-4 hours) but not for longer periods. Similar results were obtained with CD4+ and CD8+ synovial tissue T cell clones (TCCs), which induced the production of TIMP-1 by fibroblasts when stimulated for short (2-4 hours), but not long, periods of time. This time dependency was not observed with HUT-78 cells. The production of MMP-1 by fibroblasts and synoviocytes upon cellular contact with stimulated T cells was higher than that induced by an optimum concentration of IL-1beta, whereas the production of PGE2 was equivalent or slightly lower. Cell membrane-associated IL-1alpha and tumor necrosis factor a, but not CD69, CD40 ligand, or CD11b, were involved in the induction of MMP-1 and PGE2 production, as shown by blockade experiments using monoclonal antibodies and cytokine antagonists. CONCLUSION: Synovial tissue TCCs and PBTL stimulated for long periods of time trigger the production of PGE2 and MMP-1, but not TIMP-1, in synoviocytes and dermal fibroblasts, thus inducing an imbalance between the metalloenzyme and its inhibitor. These results demonstrate that T cells may affect fibroblast and synoviocyte functions directly (i.e., by contact activation) and indirectly (i.e., by activation of cytokine production in monocyte/macrophages, which in turn, trigger stromal cell functions). Since the production of MMPs in monocyte/macrophages is also induced upon contact with stimulated T cells, our results strongly suggest that contact of synovial cells with chronically stimulated T lymphocytes favors matrix catabolism. By analogy, this mechanism may trigger tissue destruction in vivo and, thus, may potentiate tissue destruction in chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA. 相似文献

The knowledge and attitudes toward cancer pain management of physicians, nurses, and pharmacists in the state of New Hampshire were examined through the use of a statewide survey. Many of the providers who completed the survey, and thus indicated that they treated patients with cancer pain on a regular basis, were not pain or oncology specialists. Most of these providers were quite well informed about the fundamentals of cancer pain management. Approximately 90% of providers in all three groups were not concerned about addiction among cancer patients. Yet, there was a small percentage of providers who responded in less than optimal ways to items dealing with opioid pharmacology, pain assessment, and the importance of pain relief. Comparison of responses among provider groups indicated that nurses were the most knowledgeable and pharmacists the least knowledgeable about pain assessment. Physicians were the most knowledgeable regarding opioid pharmacology but seemed the least committed to providing optimal pain relief. Further analysis identified a small group of physicians that included a disproportionately high percentage of family practitioners and surgeons who consistently responded in less than optimal ways to items dealing with the importance of pain relief. The results of this study indicate a continuing need for broad-based educational programs in cancer pain management and for new initiatives focused on practitioners who see relatively few cancer patients and may have difficulty accessing traditional educational programs. 相似文献

Landsat-D will be launched in late 1981 or early 1982 into a Sun-synchronous orbit near 700 km. Landsat-D systems and the principal observing instrument, the Thematic Mapper, are being designed and implemented to provide a significantly improved Earth-resources monitoring capability. The Thematic Mapper will have seven spectral bands (0.45-0.52, 0.52-0.60, 0.63-0.69, 0.76-0.90, 1.55-1.75, 2.08-2.35, and 10.5-12.5 ?m), with an instantaneous field of view at nadir of 30 m except for the thermal band (120 m). The data from the Thematic Mapper and other Landsat-D flight segment systems will be relayed to the Landsat-D ground data processing system using a direct readout capability or the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System and communications satellites. The ground systems will process the data as it arrives at rates up to 100 Mbit/s and a total volume of 2.6 × 1011 bit/day into standard digital and photographic products within 48 hours of data acquisition. This includes 200 Multispectral Scanner Subsystem and 100 Thematic Mapper scenes per day. The Thematic Mapper increased spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution should be of primary benefit in agricultural and vegetation surveys, but substantial improvements in resource and land cover observations for geology, land use, and water resources applications are also to be anticipated. 相似文献
