We reflect on the methods, activities and perspectives we used to situate digital storytelling in two rural African communities in South Africa and Kenya. We demonstrate how in-depth ethnography in a village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and a design workshop involving participants from that village allowed us to design a prototype mobile digital storytelling system suited to the needs of rural, oral users. By leveraging our prototype as a probe and observing villagers using it in two villages in South Africa and Kenya, we uncovered implications for situating digital storytelling within those communities. Finally, we distil observations relevant to localizing storytelling and their implications for transferring design into a different community.  相似文献

A new approach is introduced for turbidite modeling, leveraging the potential of computational fluid dynamics methods to simulate the flow processes that led to turbidite formation. The practical use of numerical flow simulation for the purpose of turbidite modeling so far is hindered by the need to specify parameters and initial flow conditions that are a priori unknown. The present study proposes a method to determine optimal simulation parameters via an automated optimization process. An iterative procedure matches deposit predictions from successive flow simulations against available localized reference data, as in practice may be obtained from well logs, and aims at convergence towards the best-fit scenario. The final result is a prediction of the entire deposit thickness and local grain size distribution. The optimization strategy is based on a derivative-free, surrogate-based technique. Direct numerical simulations are performed to compute the flow dynamics. A proof of concept is successfully conducted for the simple test case of a two-dimensional lock-exchange turbidity current. The optimization approach is demonstrated to accurately retrieve the initial conditions used in a reference calculation.  相似文献

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) reared in hatcheries are exposed to an environment and feeding regime that is different from wild lake trout, and are stocked at substantially larger sizes with higher lipid reserves. In addition to differences in diet and growth, this early experience may alter habitat use compared to the wild cohort. We used seasonal data on the depth and temperature distribution of wild and stocked juvenile lake trout to test for differences in habitat use and inform sampling strategies to evaluate annual recruitment. Bottom trawling was conducted from 2015 to 2019 in the central basin of Lake Champlain every two to four weeks during the ice-free season. Differences in distribution of wild and stocked lake trout were most pronounced during thermal stratification, when wild juveniles were more abundant than stocked juveniles at shallower depths and warmer temperatures and stocked juveniles were more abundant at deeper depths and colder temperatures. Temperature preferences may be a consequence of different early rearing environments; wild lake trout are acclimated to lake temperatures and forage, whereas stocked fish entered the lake with high lipid content and little foraging experience. Unbiased assessment of the proportion of wild lake trout and growth and survival of the entire juvenile lake trout population using bottom trawl sampling should either take place in the pre- and post-stratification seasons when wild and stocked fish are at the same depths, or include the full range of depths and temperatures that wild and stocked fish occupy during the stratified period.  相似文献

Olefin copolymers and terpolymers (OCPs) are used as viscosity modifiers in a large proportion of the European and world multigrade oil market. The polymer properties of the basic ethylene propylene polymers are critical to the physical characteristics of the final lubricant and its engine performance. The important parameters are discussed. Ethylene propylene polymers intended for use in other industrial applications should be checked thoroughly to avoid potential field problems. Modifications of these speciality OCPs to dispersant polymers enhance diesel and dispersant lubricant properties, enabling the most severe lubricant performance requirements to be met. The paper also reviews developments reported in the literature on the production and handling of the products together with their application, particularly with reference to their effect on low temperature properties, engine cleanliness, wear and fuel economy of the lubricant.  相似文献

The movement-related cortical electroencephalographic potential was recorded from scalp electrodes in 8 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease studied at least 12 hours after withdrawal of their normal drug therapy, and compared with the results from a group of 8 age-matched control subjects. Two types of self-paced voluntary arm movements were examined: repetitive forward movement of a joystick, and random-choice movements of the same joystick in which subjects had to choose freely the direction in which they were to move the stick (forward, backward, left, or right). In normal subjects, the movement-related cortical potential was larger prior to random-choice movements, whereas in the patients, the amplitude was the same in both tasks. The implication is that processes involved in self-selection of movement are abnormal in Parkinson's disease. This may contribute to the difficulty that patients have in initiating voluntary movement in the absence of any external cues.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale vertical tower steam pasteurization unit was evaluated to determine the antimicrobial effectiveness of different exposure times (0, 3, 6, 12, and 15 s) and steam chamber temperatures (82.2, 87.8, 93.3, and 98.9 degrees C) against pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria innocua) inoculated onto prerigor beef tissue. Samples were collected and microbiologically analyzed immediately before and after steam treatment to quantify the effectiveness of each time-temperature combination. The 0-s exposure at all chamber temperatures (cold water spray only, no steam treatment) was the experimental control and provided < or = 0.3 log CFU/cm2 reductions. Chamber temperatures of 82.2 and 87.8 degrees C were ineffective (P > 0.05) at all exposure times. At 93.3 degrees C, significant reductions (> 1.0 log CFU/cm2) were observed at exposure times of > or = 6 s, with 15 s providing approximately 1 log cycle greater reductions than 12 s of exposure. The 98.9 degrees C treatment was consistently the most effective, with exposure times of > or = 9 s resulting in >3.5 log CFU/cm2 reductions for all pathogens.  相似文献

Meetings are crucial elements in the functioning of organizations. Actors commonly noted as causing a meeting to lose its effectiveness (achieve the desired outcomes) are too many or too few individuals, wrong individuals, lack of goals, and hidden agenda/motives. Several researchers have focused on determining the optimal group size for a meeting. Much of this work was based on the concept that as the size of a group increases, meeting outcome measures (net value) increase until a maximum point is reached. Any further increases in group size would yield negative net benefits. Using induced-value experimentation, we completed controlled experimentation of the relationships between group size and group meeting outcomes. Outcome measures are directly observable rather than being self-reported. We find that no significant differences exist between group size and decision quality or decision satisfaction. There are significant differences across group sizes in solution time, total participation, and average participation. The results raise questions about optimal group size results cited in earlier studies  相似文献
