Lead (Pb) exposure induces severe nephrotoxic effects in humans and animals. Herein, we compare the effects of two chelating agents, salinomycin and deferiprone, on Pb-induced renal alterations in mice and in the homeostasis of essential elements. Adult male mice (Institute of Cancer Research (ICR)) were randomized into four groups: control (Ctrl)—untreated mice administered distilled water for 28 days; Pb-exposed group (Pb)—mice administered orally an average daily dose of 80 mg/kg body weight (BW) lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) during the first two weeks of the experimental protocol followed by the administration of distilled water for another two weeks; salinomycin-treated (Pb + Sal) group—Pb-exposed mice, administered an average daily dose of 16 mg/kg BW salinomycin for two weeks; deferiprone-treated (Pb + Def) group—Pb-exposed mice, administered an average daily dose of 20 mg/kg BW deferiprone for 14 days. The exposure of mice to Pb induced significant accumulation of the toxic metal in the kidneys and elicited inflammation with leukocyte infiltrations near the glomerulus. Biochemical analysis of the sera revealed that Pb significantly altered the renal function markers. Pb-induced renal toxicity was accompanied by a significant decrease in the endogenous renal concentrations of phosphorous (P), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se). In contrast to deferiprone, salinomycin significantly improved renal morphology in Pb-treated mice and decreased the Pb content by 13.62% compared to the Pb-exposed group. There was also a mild decrease in the renal endogenous concentration of magnesium (Mg) and elevation of the renal concentration of iron (Fe) in the salinomycin-treated group compared to controls. Overall, the results demonstrated that salinomycin is a more effective chelating agent for the treatment of Pb-induced alterations in renal morphology compared to deferiprone.  相似文献

Diporeia, formerly the dominant benthic macroinvertebrate in the Great Lakes, remains a keystone species in Lake Superior. Little is known, however, about fine scale amphipod distributions, especially as influenced by the production, transport and transformation of energy resources. Here, we document the distribution and abundance of Diporeia along 19 transects around the lake's perimeter. Regions of elevated density, averaging 958 ± 408 Diporeia/m2 (mean ± S.D.) were observed along all transects, typically within slope habitat (depth of 30–125 m). Waters shoreward (shelf habitat, < 30 m) and lakeward (profundal habitat, > 125 m) of these regions supported significantly lower densities, averaging 239 ± 178/m2 and 106 ± 59/m2, respectively. Amphipods within regions of elevated density, termed here the Ring of Fire, account for two-thirds of the lakewide population while occupying only one-quarter of the benthic habitat. The Ring of Fire, observed lakewide as a band averaging 14.2 ± 9.4 km in width, is characterized as a region of transitional sediment deposition with gentle slope, proximate to nearshore locations of elevated primary production. Within the Ring of Fire exceptionally high densities are found in the south central region, where the Keweenaw Current and slope bathymetries serve to funnel production from adjoining regions of high production. Density measurements for the 173 stations sampled here are used to estimate lakewide Diporeia standing stock (22.5–37.7 trillion individuals, 4.4–7.4 Gg dry weight, 2.1–3.5 Gg C), individual and biomass density (274–460/m2, 0.05–0.09 g DW/m2, 0.03–0.04 gC/m2) and areal (0.02–0.03 g C/m2/yr) and total (1.6–2.6 Gg C/yr) production.  相似文献

The hydrogenation of carbon monoxide over Co/SiO2 catalysts obtained by reduction of precursors prepared by the reaction of dicobaltoctacarbonyl with silica gives rise to a mixture of alcohols and hydrocarbons. The chain growth probability for hydrocarbon synthesis is similar to that observed over conventional catalysts prepared by the ammonia method (=0.74) with a comparable metal dispersion (metal particle size 4 nm). Alcohol formation yields a smaller chain growth probability (=0.42). Magnetic measurements have shown that in the latter catalyst, small cobalt clusters (1 nm) are likely to be present together with the cobalt particles (4 nm), this observation reconciles apparently conflicting results from the literature. It has been speculated that alcohol formation might be related to the presence of these clusters according to a concerted mechanism. Furthermore, the observation of large amounts of acetates by temperature-programmed hydrogenation, not detected in hydrocarbon selective catalysts, suggests that they may play a role in ethanol synthesis.  相似文献

The connectivity of wireless networks is commonly analyzed using static geometric graphs. However, with half-duplex radios and due to interference, static or instantaneous connectivity cannot be achieved. It is not necessary, either, since packets take multiple time slots to propagate through the network. For example, if a packet traverses a link in one time slot, it is irrelevant if the next link is available in that time slot also, but it is relevant if the next hop exists in the next time slot. To account for half-duplex constraints and the dynamic changes in the transmitting set of nodes due to MAC scheduling and traffic loads, we introduce a random multi-digraph that captures the evolution of the network connectivity in a dynamic fashion. To obtain concrete results, we focus on Poisson networks, where transmitters form a Poisson point process on the plane at all time instants. We first provide analytical results for the degree distribution of the graph and derive the distributional properties of the end-to-end connection delay using techniques from first-passage percolation and epidemic processes. Next, we prove that under some assumptions, the delay scales linearly with the source–destination distance even in the presence of interference. We also provide simulation results in support of the theoretical results.  相似文献

This study is composed of three essential parts. The first part describes an indirect semi-experimental method which is used to reconstruct the excitation force of an operating diesel engine from the acceleration data measured at the mounting points. These internal forces can not be directly measured with force sensors; they have to be derived from the dynamic deformation of the engine support, so a theoretical analysis is carried out to derive the equations for the force re-construction.The second part deals with prevention of low frequency vibration of the powertrain from spreading to the rest of the vehicle. Three uncoupling techniques are used to minimize these vibrations. The first technique reduces the non-diagonal elements of stiffness matrix. The second technique uses the elastic axes decoupling criterion. The third technique uncouple the torque roll axis (TRA) by using the previously determined excitation efforts.In the third part, numerical and experimental results are discussed. The solicitations deducted and the positions of mounts allowing decoupling of the powertrain are presented.  相似文献

Earthquakes can affect large dam projects in many different ways. Usually, design engineers are focussing on ground shaking and neglect the other aspects. The May 12, 2008 Wenchuan earthquake has damaged 1803 dams and reservoirs, and 403 hydropower plants with an installed capacity of 3.3GW. Among these dams were the 132-m-high Shapai RCC arch dam and the 156-m-high Zipingpu concrete face rockfill dam. These recently completed dams are dam types which, up to now, have not experienced strong ground shaking. The widespread mass movements have caused substantial damage to dams and surface powerhouses in Sichuan. The different features of earthquake hazard are presented, i.e., ground shaking, faulting and mass movements. It is proposed to prepare project-specific safety plans for all dams, which consist of a matrix where the possible hazards and the corresponding countermeasures are listed. The earthquake behaviors of the Sefid Rud, Zipingpu and Shapai dams, which, in the past, have experienced strong ground shaking from nearby earthquakes, are discussed. Finally, the need for strong motion instrumentation of large dams is discussed. It is proposed that major dams with large damage potential, dams located in areas of high seismicity, and dams showing signs of abnormal behavior be equipped with strong motion instruments.  相似文献

Noncompliance is a common problem exhibited by children with developmental delay (DD; Walker, 1993). The authors evaluated whether performance on the Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA) test would predict compliance of children with and without DD to instructions alone (IA) versus instructions with modelling and/or gestures (IMG) administered by their caregivers. The ABLA test uses standard prompting and reinforcement procedures to assess the ease or difficulty with which a testee is able to learn a simple imitation and five two-choice discriminations. Twenty-one children without DD and 16 children with DD were presented with five age-appropriate educational tasks by their respective caregivers in a structured teaching session that included IA on some trials and IMG on others. The ABLA test performance reliably predicted the compliance of the children in the two conditions, and the results were consistent across both groups. The results are important for providing information to caregivers on how best to instruct their children in an effort to increase compliance. Confined pulsating jets in simplified two-dimensional models of the larynx are considered to study human phonation. The jets are generated by periodically oscillating inlet velocities in stationary vocal tracts. The jets are computed by solving the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations by a high order finite difference method, which has been constructed to be strictly stable for linear hyperbolic and parabolic problems.
